How to check remaining balance on 2023 IRS tax payment?
Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out how much I still owe on my 2023 taxes. I made a payment already, but I'm not sure if I've paid it all off or if there's still a balance. Anyone know how I can check this? I've been trying to get through to the IRS but no luck so far.

Ugh, dealing with the IRS is such a pain. I had to do this last year and it took forever. Have you tried logging into your account on the IRS website? Sometimes you can see your balance there.

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried that but the website keeps giving me an error. Might be because so many people are trying to access it right now 😫

No kidding! It's like they don't want us to pay our taxes or something lol

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's the link: https://www.claimyr.com

Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

I'm skeptical. How do we know this isn't just some scam?

I get the skepticism, but I promise it's legit. I was desperate and took a chance. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo

Can confirm, I used it last week. Felt kinda weird paying to talk to the IRS, but it beats waiting on hold for 3 hours 🤷♂️

Have you tried calling the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service? They're seperate from the main IRS line and might be able to help you out. Their number is 1-877-777-4778.

I'm in the same boat, OP. The whole system is so confusing. Why can't they just send us a bill with the exact amount we owe? It's like they want us to mess up 🙄

For real! In some countries, the government just tells you what you owe. We're living in the stone age here 😩

Preach! 🙌 The tax system is designed to keep us confused and frustrated. It's all a big game

Here's what you need to do to check your 2023 tax balance: 1. Go to the IRS website (www.irs.gov) 2. Click on 'View Your Account' 3. Log in with your ID.me account or create one if you haven't already 4. Once logged in, you should see your account balance for 2023 5. If you can't access online, call 1-800-829-1040 (be prepared for a long wait) 6. Another option is to request a tax transcript, which shows your tax return info including payments If the website is down, keep trying at different times. Early morning or late night usually works better. Hope this helps!

Great advice! Just want to add that creating an ID.me account can be a bit of a hassle, but it's worth it for easy access to your tax info.

lmao imagine actually being able to reach the IRS. I've been trying for weeks. At this point, I'm convinced they're all on permanent vacation 🏖️

Have you considered hiring a tax professional? They usually have better ways to contact the IRS and can handle this stuff for you. Might be worth the cost to save yourself the headache.

That's not a bad idea. Do you have any recommendations for affordable tax pros?

Check out the National Association of Enrolled Agents website. They have a directory of certified tax pros. Prices vary, but many offer free consultations.

Pro tip: If you owe less than $50,000, you can set up an installment agreement online without having to talk to anyone. Might be worth looking into if you're having trouble getting your exact balance.

This is why I always overpay my estimated taxes. Rather have them owe me than the other way around. Less stress come tax season.

But then you're giving the government an interest-free loan! 🤔

True, but peace of mind is worth more to me than a few bucks in interest 🤷♀️
