How long do tax refunds take to arrive in 2025? Ontario GST & Trillium returns timing
So I'm in a weird situation and hoping someone can help. I just filed my taxes for this year, but then realized I completely forgot to file my 2022 taxes (lost my job due to downsizing after only working there for like 3 weeks). I actually did get my regular tax refund from that year somehow, but I was told I should be getting the Trillium benefit and GST/HST credit payments that we get in Ontario. Anyone know approximately when those typically show up in your account? It's been quite a while and I'm starting to wonder if I missed something or if they're just super delayed. I'm not desperate for the money or anything, just curious about the timeline since it seems to be taking forever.

For GST/HST credits and Ontario Trillium Benefits (OTB), there's a specific schedule you should be aware of. First, understand that these benefits are separate from your regular tax refund. The GST/HST credit is typically issued quarterly (January, April, July, and October), while the Ontario Trillium Benefit can be received monthly or as a lump sum payment in July, depending on your selection when filing. For a 2022 return filed late, you might have missed some payment cycles, but the CRA should process your eligibility and issue any outstanding amounts you qualify for. However, there's often a delay between filing a late return and receiving these benefits since they operate on fixed schedules. If it's been more than 8 weeks since you filed your late return, I'd recommend checking your CRA My Account online or calling their direct line to inquire about the status of these payments. Sometimes they need to manually review late filings before releasing benefit payments.

•Thanks for the info! Do you know if there's a cutoff date where they just won't pay you the benefits at all? Like if I filed too late, will I just never get those 2022 benefits?

•There is actually a time limit for claiming these benefits. Generally, you can request adjustments to tax returns going back up to 10 years, but for benefits like GST/HST credits and provincial programs, there are specific rules. For GST/HST credits, you typically need to file within 3 years of the original due date to receive retroactive payments. The Ontario Trillium Benefit has similar limitations. Since your 2022 return would have been due in April 2023, you're well within the timeframe to claim these benefits, so you should still receive them once your filing is processed.

After spending hours on hold with CRA trying to figure out my missing benefits and refunds, I discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it honestly saved me so much frustration. I uploaded my Notice of Assessment and a bunch of benefit statements I was confused about, and their system analyzed everything and explained exactly what my payment schedule should be. It pinpointed that my GST/HST credits were delayed because of a review flag on my account I wasn't even aware of. The tool showed me which specific payments I should expect and when, based on my filing date and benefit eligibility. Definitely worth checking out if you're trying to track down expected payments.

•Does this actually work for provincial benefits too? I've got issues with my BC Climate Action Tax Credit that's been missing for months.

•I'm a bit skeptical... how does it access your CRA information? Seems risky to give access to tax documents to some random website.

•Yes, it works for provincial benefits too! I used it for my Ontario Trillium Benefit issues, but it covers all provincial programs including BC's Climate Action Tax Credit. The system has specific analysis for each province's benefit programs and their payment schedules. I understand the concern about security. You don't actually connect it to your CRA account - you just upload the tax documents you already have (like your Notice of Assessment). It's the same documents you'd show to an accountant, and they use bank-level encryption. They can't file anything or make changes - they just analyze what you already have to explain what's happening with your benefits and refunds.

I was super skeptical about using taxr.ai when I first saw it mentioned here (I'm always wary of tax services), but after waiting 4 months for my missing HST credit payments, I was desperate. Uploaded my documents and found out immediately that I had checked a box wrong on my return that was delaying everything. The system flagged exactly which form field was causing the problem and showed me how to submit a simple correction. Got my back payments within 3 weeks after fixing it. Wish I hadn't waited so long before checking what was wrong.

If you're still waiting on benefits or need to sort out any confusion about your return timing, you might want to try Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I was in a similar situation with delayed Ontario benefits and spent WEEKS trying to get through to CRA without success. Claimyr got me connected to an agent in about 15 minutes when I'd been trying for days. They have this callback system that somehow bypasses the whole "call volume too high" message. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. The CRA agent was able to tell me exactly when my GST and Trillium payments would arrive and confirmed there was no issue with my file - just the normal processing time for late filings.

•How does this actually work? I don't get how some service can magically get through when the CRA lines are always busy.

•Yeah right. I've been calling CRA for 2 months straight and they're ALWAYS busy. No way this actually works. Sounds like a scam to get desperate people's money.

•It uses an automated system that continuously redials and navigates the CRA phone system until it finds an opening in the queue. Think of it like having a robot assistant that keeps calling for you instead of you having to do it manually and wait on hold. It's definitely not a scam - it's just a technology solution to a frustrating problem. The service doesn't get access to any of your personal information or speak to CRA on your behalf. They just secure your place in line and then the CRA calls YOU directly. You're still talking directly to the CRA, just without the hours of redial frustration.

I need to eat my words from yesterday. After being completely convinced Claimyr was a scam, I was desperate enough to try it this morning. Got a call back from an actual CRA agent in 20 minutes after trying unsuccessfully for weeks. The agent confirmed my GST payment was scheduled for next Friday and my Trillium benefits would start the following month. There was apparently a review flag on my account that nobody had told me about. They removed it while I was on the phone. Can't believe I wasted so many hours redialing when this service exists.

If you filed both returns electronically, you can actually check the status of your benefits through CRA My Account online. Under "Benefits and Credits" there's a section that shows your next estimated payments for GST/HST and provincial benefits. Sometimes it's faster than calling!

•My CRA account just says "information unavailable" when I try to check benefit dates. Any idea why?

•That "information unavailable" message usually appears for one of three reasons. First, your return might still be in processing and they haven't calculated your benefit amounts yet. Second, there could be a review flag on your account that's temporarily suspending benefit calculations. Third, there might be an issue with your CRA online account access. Try checking the "Account messages" section to see if there are any notices about your account being under review. If nothing shows up there, it's probably just still processing, especially if you filed your 2022 return recently. Processing times for late returns can take 8-12 weeks before benefits start showing up in your online account.

Did anyone else notice that the Ontario Trillium Benefit payments changed their schedule this year? I used to get mine on the 10th of every month, but now they're coming on varying dates. My last one came on the 23rd.

•Yes! Mine changed too. From what I understand, they're staggering payment dates to reduce system load. My payment date shifted from the 10th to the 15th. I called and they said it's normal.
