Hardship funds released by Tax Advocate, showing on SBTPG with 05/17/2025 date - when will I actually receive money?

I submitted a hardship request about 3 weeks ago and finally got approved. My tax advocate called me yesterday to tell me they released my refund! I checked SBTPG (Santa Barbara Tax Products Group) today and can see the funds are there with a deposit date of 05/17/2025. Does anyone know how long it typically takes from when it shows on SBTPG to when I'll actually get the money in my account? This has been such a nightmare process and I really need these funds asap for medical bills.

If you can see it in SBTPG, you're very close! If you had your fees taken out of your refund, SBTPG will typically hold it for 1-2 business days before sending it to your bank. Then your bank might hold it for another day depending on their policies. So most likely you'll see it by 5/19 or 5/20, assuming no weekends or holidays get in the way. Your tax advocate really came through for you. Many people wait months for hardship requests to be processed. Did you have to provide documentation for your hardship claim?

Thanks for the info! Yes, I did have to provide proof of my medical bills and a letter from my doctor. Had to scan and email everything to the advocate. Took about 2 weeks after that for approval.

wait u had to give your tax advocate medical bills? did they try to verify them with your doctor? i've got a similar situation but im nervous about sharing personal medical info

0 coins

They didnt call my doctor or anything, just needed the documentation to prove i had a legit hardship. They were actually really professional about it.

0 coins

This is pretty standard for hardship claims. The IRS has to verify you have an actual hardship before fast-tracking anything. Medical issues are one of the most common reasons they'll approve.

how long did it take to get assigned a tax advocate? ive been waiting like 6 weeks and havent heard anything 😭

0 coins

I called the Taxpayer Advocate Service directly and got assigned someone in about 10 days. Don't wait for them to contact you - be proactive!

Hey I was in a similar situation last month and honestly I was going insane trying to figure out what was happening with my refund. A friend recommended this tool called taxr.ai and it was a game changer. It explained everything on my transcript in plain English and showed exactly where my hardship request was in the process. Way better than trying to decode all the IRS jargon myself. The site is https://taxr.ai - definitely check it out if you're dealing with any other tax stuff this year!

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does wayyy more than just read it. It actually explains all the codes and dates, tells you what's happening behind the scenes, and gives you a clear timeline. I was shocked at how detailed it was - showed me exactly why my refund was delayed and when I could expect it. Honestly saved me hours of stress and confusion!

I get the skepticism, I really do. I was the same way. But this isn't some random app - it's basically an AI tool that decodes all the IRS gibberish into actual human language. Saved me from having to call the IRS like 5 times. Look into it before dismissing it, that's all I'm saying.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO TRY THIS TOOL!!! I spent months trying to figure out why my refund was delayed and this solved it in minutes. The IRS website is straight garbage and the phone lines are a joke. This taxr thing is literally the only thing that helped me understand what was happening with my money.

When I had my hardship funds released, it took exactly 3 business days from when it showed on SBTPG to hit my bank account. I'd say you'll have it by next Wednesday at the latest. Congrats on getting approved, the hardship process is a nightmare!

I was stuck in a similar situation last month and could NOT reach anyone at the IRS to save my life. Kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual IRS agent who helped push my hardship request through. Best money I ever spent considering how much of my refund was just sitting there collecting dust. The agent was able to release my funds that same day, which was amazing after months of waiting.

0 coins

did it actually work? i've been trying to call the IRS for weeks and can never get through

0 coins

100% worked. They basically hold your place in line and call you back when they have an agent on the line. Saved me literally hours of my life on hold. And the agent I got was actually super helpful once I explained my hardship situation.

0 coins

Thank you for this tip! I have a second issue I need to resolve with them and dreading more phone calls. Definitely going to try this.

Whats the catch tho? Nothing is ever this easy with the IRS 🧐

0 coins

No catch, it just does what it says - gets you connected to an IRS agent without the endless hold time. You still have to deal with the IRS policies and procedures once you're talking to them lol. But at least you're ACTUALLY talking to someone who can help.

just tried it and already have a callback scheduled!! after 3 weeks of trying to get through myself. this is a lifesaver thank you!!!

SBTPG is the absolute worst. They held my funds for 4 business days last month. They claim it's for "security" but we all know they're just making interest off our money. Such a scam that we even have to deal with them.

0 coins

THIS!!!! šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘ They made me verify my identity twice and still held my money for a week. Next year I'm definitely not using a preparer that uses SBTPG.

there's literally a class action lawsuit against them rn for exactly this reason. they make millions in interest by holding everyone's refunds for "processing

Not surprised at all. Wish I could just get my refund direct from the IRS but my tax preparer uses them and didn't give me a choice.

0 coins

Usually takes 2-3 business days. But since 5/17 is a Friday, you probably won't see it until Monday 5/20 or Tuesday 5/21. Congrats on getting your hardship approved! My tax advocate has been absolutely useless... been waiting since February for any movement on my case.

0 coins

Thank you! And I'm sorry you're still waiting. Have you tried asking to speak to the advocate's manager? That's what I did when things weren't moving fast enough.

0 coins

I didn't know that was an option! I'll definitely try that tomorrow. Mind sharing what you said to get escalated to a manager?

0 coins

I just explained that I had a serious medical situation that couldn't wait any longer. I was polite but firm that I needed immediate assistance. The manager ended up prioritizing my case.

I'm surprised you got a tax advocate that actually answered the phone and helped you! Mine ghosted me for 3 months lol. To answer your question, for most people it's about 1-3 business days from SBTPG showing it to actually getting the deposit. Make sure all your banking info is correct on there!

quick question - how long did it take from when you submitted your hardship request until you got assigned a tax advocate? im on week 4 of waiting and getting desperate

0 coins

It took about 10 days to get assigned an advocate, but I called the Taxpayer Advocate Service directly and explained my medical situation. I think that helped speed things up.

thx for the info! gonna try calling them directly tomorrow.

The irs and their systems are such a joke. It's 2025 and they're still using technology from the 90s. glad you're finally getting your money tho, the hardship process is brutal. When I went through it last year I had to provide bank statements, bills, everything short of a blood sample šŸ™„

fr tho šŸ’Æ my dad worked for the IRS for 30 years and he says they're still using the same computer systems from when he started in the 90s. absolute clown show 🤔

0 coins

And yet they still expect us all to file perfectly while they can't even process returns correctly. Make it make sense.

Wait, how did you get the tax advocate to even respond to you? I've left like 20 messages over the past two months and haven't heard anything back. Also, to answer your question - when I finally got my refund through SBTPG last year, it took exactly 2 business days to hit my bank.

0 coins

I called the main TAS line (1-877-777-4778) and explained my medical hardship situation. They connected me with a local advocate who called me back the next day. Hope that helps!

Thank you!! I'm gonna try that tomorrow morning. Been so frustrated with this whole process.

pro tip: call your bank and let them know you're expecting a large deposit from the IRS via SBTPG. Some banks will put a hold on unexpected large deposits for fraud prevention. this happened to me and added another 3 days to my wait 😫

0 coins

Thanks for the tip! Hadn't even thought about that. I'll call my bank tomorrow morning.

0 coins

mine showed on SBTPG on a Tuesday and hit my account Thursday morning. so like 2 business days. but I've seen others take longer. depends on SBTPG and your bank.

Just curious - what kind of documentation did you have to provide for your hardship claim? I'm about to file one for my own medical issues and want to be prepared. And congrats on getting through this bureaucratic nightmare!

0 coins

I had to provide medical bills, a letter from my doctor explaining why treatment couldn't be delayed, and bank statements showing I couldn't cover the costs without my refund. Be super detailed in your explanation - that seemed to help speed things up.

Thank you! Really appreciate the specifics. I've got all my medical bills ready to go. Just need to get the doctor's letter.

I went through this exact scenario last summer. Had a medical hardship, tax advocate released funds, showed in SBTPG with a date... but then there was a problem with my bank account info and it got returned to the IRS. Make 100% sure all your banking details are correct before you get too excited.

0 coins

Oh no, that sounds horrible! Just double checked my banking info and everything looks correct. Thanks for the warning!

0 coins

No problem! Hope your deposit goes through without any issues. It was a nightmare getting mine straightened out after the return.

0 coins

SBTPG is the WORST! their website says 1-2 business days, but they held mine for 5 days last time. They're making interest on our money while we wait. Such a scam that tax preparers force us to use them.

0 coins

i'm in the exact same boat but haven't seen any movement yet. how long between when the advocate said they released funds until it showed up on SBTPG? mine said they released it monday but nothing is showing up anywhere 😭

0 coins

It was about 24 hours for me between the advocate saying it was released and it showing up on SBTPG. Have you checked your transcript? That updated for me first.

0 coins

i keep trying to check my transcript but the irs website keeps giving me errors. gonna try again tomorrow. thanks for the info!

So happy to hear you got your hardship approved! When I was going through this process, I found that the best way to actually understand what was happening with my refund was to use taxr.ai - it showed me exactly where I was in the process and when funds would be released. Helped me sleep better knowing exactly what was going on instead of guessing. Check it out if you have any more tax issues this year!

i keep seeing people mention this. what does it actually do? sounds too good to be true tbh

Molly Hansen

•

It basically translates all the IRS codes and jargon into plain english. Shows you exactly what's happening with your refund and gives timelines for when you'll get paid. Saved me so much headache trying to decode my transcript. And the predictions were spot on - told me exactly when my money would be released.

0 coins

That's awesome that your tax advocate came through for you! Based on my experience, once it shows up in SBTPG with a date, you're usually looking at 2-3 business days max before it hits your account. Since your date shows 05/17/2025 (Friday), I'd expect to see it in your bank by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Just make sure to keep an eye on your account and maybe give your bank a heads up about the incoming deposit - some banks will flag large unexpected deposits. The hardship process is such a pain but sounds like you're finally at the finish line. Hope you get your funds soon and can take care of those medical bills! šŸ¤ž
