H&R Block keeps rejecting my state tax return - any solutions for this error?

I'm at my wits end with H&R Block this year. I've been trying to file both my federal and state returns using their free software, and while my federal went through without a hitch, my stupid state return keeps getting rejected over and over. I've tried submitting it 3 times now! When I check the rejection reason, it just cuts off mid-sentence and doesn't show the full error message. It literally just says "Your state return was rejected because" and then nothing. Like, thanks for the helpful info H&R Block! Has anyone else dealt with this? I worked two jobs this year - one full-time position making about $46,000 and some weekend bartending where I made another $14,000. All my W-2s are entered correctly as far as I can tell. I'm filing as single, no dependents. I double-checked all my personal info and everything matches what I've used in previous years. I've already spent like 6 hours on this and I'm getting super frustrated. Any ideas what could be causing the state rejection while federal went through fine?

This happens more often than you'd think! When your federal return is accepted but state is rejected, it's usually because of a state-specific requirement that wasn't met. Since the error message is getting cut off, here are the most common reasons for state rejections: 1. Your state ID/driver's license information might be missing or incorrect. Many states now require this for e-filing. 2. There could be a mismatch between your name/SSN and what the state has on file. 3. You might have missed answering a state-specific question or schedule. 4. If you moved during the tax year, there might be residency timeline issues. 5. The state might need additional documentation for your specific situation with multiple income sources. Try going back through your state return step-by-step, especially focusing on the "personal information" section. Make sure your driver's license info is correctly entered with the exact expiration date.

I had a similar issue and it turned out I needed to attach a specific state form for my second job. Does H&R Block show any warnings or additional forms needed for multiple W-2s in your state?

With multiple W-2s, some states do require additional documentation or special handling. Check if there's a state-specific schedule for multiple employers that needs to be completed. Most states have adapted their systems to handle multiple jobs, but some still have specific requirements. Sometimes the error is actually displayed in a different section of the software than where you're looking. Try going to the main dashboard and look for any warning flags or alerts rather than just the submission status screen.

Last tax season I went through exactly the same nightmare with H&R Block rejecting my state returns multiple times. After hours of frustration, I discovered taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it completely saved me. It's an AI tool that analyzes your tax documents and pinpoints exactly what's causing rejections. I uploaded screenshots of my error messages and returns, and it immediately identified that my state was rejecting because I had incorrectly calculated a credit related to my multiple income sources. Their system explained the exact field that needed fixing and how to correct it - something H&R Block's vague error messages never told me!

That sounds promising! I'm dealing with a similar issue. Does it work with any tax software or just H&R Block? And does it actually tell you how to fix the specific error in your software?

I'm a bit skeptical... how does this actually work? Like, do you give them access to your tax return with all your personal info? Sounds risky to upload all that financial data to some random website.

It works with any tax software including H&R Block, TurboTax, TaxAct, and others. The tool specifically identifies what's causing the rejection in plain English and gives you step-by-step instructions on how to fix it in whichever software you're using. For privacy concerns, they use secure encryption for all uploads and you can black out sensitive information like your SSN before uploading. They just need to see the fields and error messages to diagnose the issue. The system is designed to focus on the tax rules and calculations rather than your personal data.

Update: I tried what @12 suggested with taxr.ai and I'm actually shocked at how well it worked. I was really skeptical (as you could see in my earlier comment), but I was desperate after H&R Block rejected my state return for the 5th time. I uploaded screenshots of my rejection messages and answer summary from H&R Block, and within minutes it told me exactly what was wrong - I had entered my state withholding amount incorrectly for my second job. The number on my W-2 box 17 was supposed to be $1,274 but somehow I typed $1,724. Such a simple typo that H&R Block never flagged! Fixed it in 2 minutes and my return went through immediately. Wish I'd known about this weeks ago instead of banging my head against the wall with those useless error messages.

If you're still stuck after trying the suggestions above, you might need to actually speak with your state's tax department. I had a similar issue and it turned out there was a flag on my account from a previous year. The problem is getting through to an actual human at these tax departments can be nearly impossible! After being on hold for 2+ hours multiple times, I found this service called Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) that literally called the tax department for me and then connected me once they had a real person on the line. They have a demo video here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c It saved me hours of hold time, and the state tax rep was able to tell me exactly why my return kept getting rejected (turned out to be an issue with my previous address not matching their records). Might be worth a try if you're completely stuck.

Thanks for the suggestion! How long did it take them to get someone on the line for you? My state tax department (Illinois) is notoriously bad with phone support.

This sounds too good to be true. You expect me to believe a service can somehow magically skip the hold queue that everyone else has to wait in? How would that even work?

For Illinois, it took about 45 minutes for them to get through, compared to the 3+ hours I spent failing to reach anyone myself. They use automated dialing technology that stays on hold so you don't have to, and they only call you once they have a representative on the line. The service doesn't skip the queue - they wait in it for you. They use a combination of technology that redials if disconnected and navigates phone trees automatically. It's basically like having someone else sit on hold instead of you having to listen to that awful hold music for hours. You can go about your day and they'll call when they have a person on the line.

Wow I need to eat my words. After my skeptical comment yesterday, I decided to try Claimyr since nothing else was working. I couldn't believe it but they actually got through to my state tax department in about an hour. Turns out the rejection was happening because there was a mismatch between my current address on this year's return and what they had on file from last year. The representative explained that because I moved counties, I needed to file an additional local tax form that H&R Block never prompted me for. They walked me through exactly what form I needed and how to add it in H&R Block. Return accepted on the first try after that! Saved me so much frustration - definitely worth it instead of spending hours on hold just to get disconnected.

Have you tried looking at the state-specific forum on H&R Block's website? Sometimes there are known issues with specific states that they post about there. Last year there was a glitch with New York state returns that was causing random rejections. Also, might be worth calling H&R Block support directly. Their free version does include support for state filing issues - most people don't realize this. The number should be in your account under "Help" or "Contact Us".

H&R Block's support isn't great in my experience. I called them last year with a similar issue and waited 1.5 hours just to have them tell me to "try again tomorrow" which didn't solve anything. They just read from scripts and don't have access to the actual state rejection reasons.

That's surprising to hear. I've had decent experiences with their phone support, but I guess it depends on who you get and maybe the time of year. You're right that early April is probably their busiest time so support quality might drop. An alternative is to try their live chat support instead of phone. The wait times are usually much shorter and you can get a transcript of the conversation which is helpful when following their instructions.

Have you tried using a different tax software? Sometimes the issue is with how one particular tax program formats the submission. I switched from H&R Block to FreeTaxUSA after having similar problems and my return went through fine. Most tax programs will let you import your info from a PDF of your H&R Block return, so you don't have to start completely from scratch. Might be worth trying if nothing else works!

I second FreeTaxUSA! Had the exact same issue with H&R Block last year. Their state returns have weird formatting issues sometimes. FreeTaxUSA is super cheap for state returns too (like $15 I think?).
