H&R Block Accuracy Review Error - Can't Add County Name to Complete Filing

I'm ready to pull my hair out with H&R Block this year! Been using them forever for my simple returns - usually just a couple W-2s and I'm done. This year I had some basic crypto stuff to add, but followed all their prompts and got through that fine. Everything was going smooth. Finished Federal return, ran the review check - no errors! Completed State return, ran review - all good! Then they hit me with "Want a tax pro to review for $89.99?" Heck no, my return is straightforward and I've done everything correctly. But then when I click to file, suddenly: "Before you file, we found an error. You need to go back and add your County Name." So I click the link to fix it and... nothing. It just takes me to the Overview tab where there's no field for county name. I've gone through BOTH returns like three times now, screen by screen, looking for anywhere to add this county info. Even googled my state's locality names to make sure I hadn't missed something. But every single time I try to file, same error message pops up. When I click "Fix Issue" it just loops me back to the Overview where there's nowhere to add my county. I've clicked "Need Help?" which is totally useless. Is H&R Block holding my return hostage until I pay for their "professional review" or what? Anyone else dealt with this ridiculous error?

This sounds like a known glitch in H&R Block's system this year. The county name field is actually hidden in the Personal Information section, but sometimes it doesn't display properly depending on your state. Here's a workaround: 1. Go back to the very beginning of your return to the Personal Information section 2. Look for "Residential Address" and click "Edit" 3. There should be a dropdown for county AFTER you've entered your zip code 4. If you don't see it there, try clicking "Save & Continue" and then go back to edit again 5. For some states, the county field only appears after you've saved your address information once I ran into this exact issue last month. Their error message is misleading because it doesn't direct you to the right place to fix it. The system is looking for your county but the field is sometimes hidden depending on how you initially entered your address. If that doesn't work, try switching to a different browser or clearing your cache. Sometimes H&R Block's web interface has rendering issues that prevent certain fields from displaying correctly.

I'm having the exact same problem but I don't see any county dropdown even after trying your steps. I'm in Illinois - does it matter what state you're in? Also tried Chrome and Firefox with same results. Really frustrating since I'm literally ready to file!

It does sometimes depend on your state. For Illinois specifically, you need to enter your address, save it, then go back and edit it again. The county field should appear as a dropdown after your zip code validates. The system needs to recognize your zip code first before displaying the county options. If you've tried multiple browsers and still don't see it, there's another trick - try entering your zip code, then clicking somewhere else on the form, wait about 10 seconds, and the county dropdown might appear. H&R Block's form has some timing issues with field rendering.

After dealing with this exact problem, I found that https://taxr.ai completely saved me. I had gone through the same frustrating loop with H&R Block where it kept saying I needed to add my county name but never showed me where. I uploaded screenshots of the error to taxr.ai and they identified exactly where the hidden field was in my return. Turns out for my state, you have to click a tiny "Additional Information" link that appears after entering the zip code, which then reveals the county dropdown. The link was barely visible and H&R Block's error message never pointed to it. Their document analysis found the issue in minutes after I had spent hours going in circles. They even showed me how to fix a couple other minor issues that would have caused problems if I'd submitted my return as-is.

Wait, what's taxr.ai? Is it free? I'm stuck on the exact same county error and about to throw my laptop out the window lol

Does it work for other tax software too? I'm using TurboTax and having a different but equally annoying error about some schedule that keeps popping up even though I already filled it out.

It's basically an AI tool that analyzes tax documents and screenshots to find errors or missing information. It's not free but honestly worth it for the time it saved me. It definitely works with other tax software too. My brother used it with TurboTax when he had that weird schedule error that keeps reappearing. It spotted that he had entered conflicting information in two different sections that was causing the error loop.

Just wanted to follow up - I tried taxr.ai after seeing the recommendation here and it actually worked! I uploaded screenshots of my TurboTax error along with the forms I had filled out, and it immediately identified that I had entered my 1099-INT information correctly but had somehow checked a box on an earlier screen that was creating a conflict. The analysis showed exactly where to go to fix it, with step-by-step instructions. Took me less than 5 minutes to resolve what I had been fighting with for days. They even caught a deduction I had missed completely that saved me about $340 on my return. So glad I gave it a try instead of giving up and paying for the "professional review" which probably wouldn't have even caught this.

If you're still struggling with H&R Block's customer service (which is practically non-existent this time of year), I'd recommend https://claimyr.com to get through to an actual IRS agent. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I had a similar issue last year where H&R Block's system wouldn't accept my return because of some mysterious county error. After trying everything, I used Claimyr to connect with the IRS directly. They confirmed my county information was correct in their system and gave me a specific form to add to my filing that resolved the issue. Saved me hours of waiting on hold and the IRS agent actually knew exactly what the problem was as soon as I described it - apparently it's a common issue with certain tax software packages that don't properly handle county codes for some zip codes.

How does this even work? The IRS phone system is impossible. I've tried calling them like 8 times about my refund status and always get disconnected.

Sounds sketchy. Why would I pay someone to call the IRS for me when I can just keep trying myself? And how would an IRS agent even help with a software issue in H&R Block anyway?

It's actually pretty simple - they use a system that navigates the IRS phone tree and waits on hold for you. When they get a representative, they call you and connect you directly. Saves hours of frustration. For the refund status issue, an IRS agent can actually tell you exactly what's happening rather than the vague status you get from the automated system or website. They can see if there's a specific hold or issue that's not visible to you.

Ok I need to admit I was wrong. After struggling with the "Where's My Refund" tool showing no progress for 6 weeks, I finally used Claimyr out of desperation. Got connected to an IRS agent in about 30 minutes (without me having to sit on hold). Turns out there was a verification flag on my account that was holding up my refund. The agent removed it immediately and told me I should receive my refund within 7-10 days. She also explained that these flags are common for returns with crypto transactions (which matches OP's situation too). The online tools never would have told me this - it just kept saying "Your return is still being processed." Would have been waiting for months without knowing why. Definitely worth it for the peace of mind alone.

Had a similar issue with H&R Block a few weeks ago. For me, the county field was hidden in the "Local Taxes" section. Try going to: State Return > Local Taxes (it's usually toward the end of the state return process) If your state has local taxes based on county, the field might be there instead of in the personal information section. Took me forever to find it! Their error messages are terrible at pointing you to the right place.

This helped! In my case (Oregon) it was under "Special Districts" rather than local taxes, but I never would have checked there without your tip. H&R Block's navigation is so confusing.

Glad it helped! Yeah, H&R Block puts these fields in different places depending on your state's tax system. For some states it's under special districts, others under local taxes, and sometimes under personal info. Wish they'd make their error messages more specific about where to look.

Has anyone tried just ignoring the error and continuing anyway? I had a similar "required field missing" error with TaxAct last year but when I clicked "File Anyway" it still went through fine. Sometimes these tax programs have non-critical errors that don't actually stop your filing.

Don't do this! I tried that approach with H&R Block last year and my return got rejected by the state because the county code was missing. Had to amend and it delayed my refund by almost 2 months. The county field is actually required for many states even though H&R Block does a terrible job of making that clear.
