Getting reject code IND-452 when trying to file taxes for my side hustle - already filed W-2 job
So I'm freaking out a bit here. I filed my taxes for my regular job back in February using H&R Block online. Everything went smoothly with that - got my W-2, entered all the info, and already got my refund deposited about 3 weeks ago. But I completely forgot about my little side gig doing graphic design work that I started last summer! I made about $8,700 from it in 2024, and I know I need to report that income. So I tried using TurboTax this weekend to file just for the side business income, and I immediately got rejected with this code IND-452. I looked it up and I think it's because I already filed my personal return? But I'm not sure what to do now. Do I need to file an amended return? Start over? Call the IRS? I really don't want to mess this up and end up getting audited or something. Has anyone dealt with this reject code before when trying to file for a side business after already submitting their W-2 tax return?

This is actually a common issue! The IND-452 rejection code means you've already filed a tax return for 2024, and you can't file a second separate return for the same tax year. Since you've already filed your W-2 income, you'll need to file an amended return (Form 1040-X) to include your side business income. You'll need to report your side business income on Schedule C, and you'll also need to fill out Schedule SE for self-employment taxes. The good news is TurboTax can help you file an amended return - just select that option instead of trying to file a new return. Make sure you have all your income documentation for the side business before starting. And don't worry too much - filing an amended return isn't uncommon and doesn't increase your audit risk as long as you're accurately reporting everything.

•Does filing an amended return delay when you have to pay the taxes owed? I'm in a similar situation and worried about penalties if I don't pay soon enough.

•Filing an amended return doesn't extend your payment deadline. The taxes for your self-employment income were technically due by the original filing deadline (April 15, 2025). If you owe additional taxes, you should pay them as soon as possible to minimize any potential penalties and interest. If you can't pay the full amount right away, the IRS offers payment plans. You can apply online through the IRS website for a short-term plan (120 days or less) or a long-term installment agreement if you need more time.

After making the exact same mistake last year (filed my W-2 then remembered my Etsy shop income), I discovered taxr.ai and it saved me so much stress! I was confused about exactly what forms to include in my amended return, and taxr.ai analyzed all my documents and told me exactly what I needed to do. The website (https://taxr.ai) has a tool that looks at your specific rejection code and tax situation and gives you step-by-step guidance.

•How accurate is this service? I'm always skeptical of tax tools since my situation gets complicated with multiple income sources.

•Does taxr.ai help with calculating how much you might owe in self-employment taxes too? That's always the part that confuses me the most with side gigs.

•It's incredibly accurate - I was impressed by how it caught details specific to my situation that generic advice online missed. It analyzed my particular rejection code and previous filing to create custom instructions. Yes, it definitely helps with self-employment tax calculations! That was actually the most helpful part for me. It broke down exactly how much I needed to pay for both the income tax portion and the self-employment tax portion, and explained which deductions I qualified for to reduce that self-employment tax burden.

Just wanted to update - I went ahead and tried taxr.ai after posting my question and I'm honestly impressed! The system analyzed my rejection code IND-452 and my previous return, then walked me through exactly how to file the amended return with my side business income. It even helped me identify business deductions I didn't know I qualified for that saved me around $650! The step-by-step instructions for including Schedule C and calculating self-employment tax were way clearer than what I found on the IRS website. Definitely worth checking out if you're in a similar situation with rejected returns!

Been there, done that! After getting the same rejection code last year, I spent WEEKS trying to get through to the IRS for help. Always busy signals or 2+ hour wait times only to get disconnected. Then someone on here told me about Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) - it's this service that gets you through to an actual IRS agent without the crazy wait. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was able to talk directly with an IRS rep who walked me through exactly what I needed to do with my amended return and confirmed I was filling everything out correctly. Saved me so much anxiety about doing it wrong!

•Wait, how does this actually work? The IRS phone lines are always jammed - how does this service get you through?

•Sounds too good to be true. I've literally never been able to reach the IRS in less than 2 hours. Is this legit or just another scam?

•The service basically uses an automated system that navigates the IRS phone tree and waits on hold for you. Once they get through to an agent, they call you and connect you directly. It's like having someone wait in line for you. It's definitely legitimate - I was skeptical too! But it works because they're not doing anything special with the IRS itself, they're just handling the waiting part. I talked to a real IRS agent who confirmed everything I needed for my amended return with the Schedule C for my side business. The agent was actually super helpful once I finally got through to them.

I have to eat my words! After being super skeptical about Claimyr, I decided to try it as a last resort after spending 3 hours on hold with the IRS yesterday before getting disconnected. The service actually worked exactly as described - they called me back in about 40 minutes and connected me with an IRS representative who answered all my questions about the IND-452 rejection and helped me understand exactly what I needed to include on my amended return. The agent confirmed I needed to file a 1040-X with Schedule C and Schedule SE for my side business, and explained which expenses I could legitimately deduct. They also told me I could expect about a 16-week processing time for the amended return. Having that direct confirmation from the IRS gave me peace of mind that I'm doing it right this time!

I had this same problem in 2023! The key thing to know is that you CANNOT file separate returns for different income sources. The US tax system requires one comprehensive return that includes ALL income sources. Here's what I did: 1) I used the same software I originally filed with (sounds like H&R Block for you) 2) Started an amended return (1040-X) 3) Added Schedule C for the side business income 4) Included Schedule SE to calculate self-employment tax 5) Paid the additional tax owed right away to minimize penalties Don't stress too much about it - this happens all the time, especially to people new to self-employment!

•Thanks for breaking it down like this! Super helpful. Quick question - should I use H&R Block for the amended return even though I was trying to use TurboTax for the side business part? I'm not sure if going back to H&R Block will be easier or if I should just start fresh with TurboTax for the amendment.

•I'd recommend using H&R Block since they already have all your W-2 information and original return data in their system. Starting with TurboTax would mean re-entering all that information, which increases the chance of making errors. Most tax software keeps your information on file, so you should be able to log back into your H&R Block account and select the option to amend your return. This will pre-populate all your original information and let you add the additional schedules and income. It's generally much easier than starting from scratch with a different provider.

A heads up about timing - I filed an amended return last year and it took about 20 weeks to process! The IRS is seriously backlogged with amended returns. Make sure you keep documentation showing when you filed the amendment in case there are any questions about late penalties.

•Does paying the owed tax immediately help avoid penalties even if the amended return takes forever to process? I'm in a similar boat with a side gig I forgot to report.
