I filed 2 separate tax returns and the second one was rejected - what should I do now?

I messed up and didn't realize you can't file multiple tax returns. My first return was through TurboTax with one W2 and a 1099, and that got accepted a few days ago. Then today I tried filing a second return through TaxSlayer with some additional 1099s (one from my investment account and another from my DoorDash gig) plus another W2 I had forgotten about. This second return got rejected almost immediately - like within 5 minutes of submitting. I'm freaking out a little - do I need to contact the IRS? File an amended return? Start completely over? I'm worried about getting flagged for tax fraud or something when I was just trying to report all my income. Any advice would be really appreciated!

You definitely need to file an amended return. The IRS only allows one tax return per tax year per person - they want all your income reported together on a single return. Since your first return was already accepted, you'll need to file Form 1040-X (Amended Return) to add the income from the additional W2 and 1099s that weren't included in your first filing. You'll need to use the same filing software you originally used (TurboTax in your case) to prepare the amendment. The good news is that you caught this quickly, and it's a common mistake. The rejection of your second return was actually the system working correctly to prevent duplicate filings.

Does it matter that they used different tax software for each filing? Will TurboTax be able to add the forms that were originally entered in TaxSlayer?

It doesn't matter that different software was used for the attempt, but the amendment should be done using the same software that created the accepted return. TurboTax can definitely handle adding those additional forms - you'll just need to manually enter the information from your other W2 and the 1099s. The amendment process is designed specifically for situations like adding previously unreported income, so they make it relatively straightforward to input the additional forms.

Been in a similar situation when I forgot about a side gig 1099. I used https://taxr.ai to help me figure out exactly what I needed to do with my amendment. You upload your documents and it analyzes them to show what you missed and need to include. Super helpful for organizing all those forms especially when you have multiple income sources! In my case, I had already filed with missing income, and the tool helped me identify exactly what needed to be on my amended return and the proper way to report it. Saved me from making more mistakes.

How long does it take to get results from the tool? I'm in a similar situation and getting anxious about fixing it quickly.

Does it actually give you specific instructions for preparing the 1040-X or just tell you what you missed? I'm never sure with these tools if they actually help with the complicated part.

You get results pretty much immediately after uploading your documents. The analysis happens in minutes, not hours or days, which is great when you're stressed about tax issues. It goes beyond just telling you what you missed - it gives specific guidance on how to report the additional income on your amended return, including which lines and schedules need to be updated. It doesn't file the amendment for you, but it gives you clear instructions to follow when you go back into your tax software.

I just wanted to follow up! I used https://taxr.ai for my similar situation and it was actually super helpful. I was missing a 1099-MISC and a K-1 from my original filing, and the tool immediately identified exactly what I needed to include on my amended return. It even pointed out a deduction I could take that I hadn't even thought about! Definitely made the amendment process way less stressful than I expected.

When I had a similar issue last year, I spent WEEKS trying to get through to the IRS for guidance. Finally found https://claimyr.com and used their service to get through to an actual IRS agent without the endless hold times. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I was honestly shocked when I got connected to a real person in under 45 minutes after trying on my own for days. The agent walked me through exactly how to handle my amended return and even noted on my account that I was proactively fixing the issue. Definitely worth it for the peace of mind.

Wait, how does this actually work? Do they just call and wait on hold for you? That seems too good to be true.

I'm skeptical. The IRS is impossible to reach. You're telling me this service somehow magically gets through when millions of people can't?

They use a system that continuously redials and navigates the IRS phone tree for you. When they finally get a spot in the queue, they call you and connect you directly to the IRS agent. You don't waste your day listening to hold music. I was skeptical too until I tried it. The technology they use can detect when there are shorter wait times and takes advantage of those windows. There's nothing magical about it - just smart tech that knows how to work the system efficiently. I spoke with an actual IRS representative who answered all my questions about my amended return, and it saved me hours of frustration.

I need to publicly eat my words. After posting my skeptical comment, I decided to try Claimyr anyway since I was desperate to talk to someone at the IRS about my missing 1099 situation. Not only did it work, but I got through to an IRS agent in about 35 minutes. The agent confirmed exactly what I needed to do for my amended return and was actually really helpful about the whole thing. They even explained how to avoid penalties since I was proactively fixing the mistake. Consider me converted from skeptic to believer.

Quick question - how long do amended returns typically take to process? I'm in a similar boat (forgot a W2) and worried about timeline.

From my experience last year, it took about 16 weeks for my amended return to fully process. The IRS says to allow up to 20 weeks currently. Definitely slower than regular returns.

Thanks for the replies about processing time. Do you know if I need to pay any additional taxes right away or wait until the amended return is processed? I'm worried about interest or penalties building up while waiting for processing.

You should pay any additional tax you expect to owe immediately, even before filing the amended return. This minimizes any interest and penalties. The IRS provides payment options on their website. If you wait until the amended return is processed, you'll definitely accrue interest on the unpaid amount, and possibly failure-to-pay penalties as well. Better to pay now even if your final amount ends up being slightly different.

Pro tip: Make sure you keep detailed records of WHEN you discovered the error and when you took steps to correct it. The IRS is more lenient with honest mistakes that you voluntarily correct promptly. Document everything.

Would it help to include a brief explanation letter with the amended return explaining the situation?
