FreeTaxUSA processing time - how long to accept return vs TurboTax?
Just filed my taxes last night using FreeTaxUSA for the first time after switching from TurboTax. With TurboTax I was used to getting that "your return has been accepted" email within like 15 minutes of submitting. It's been almost 24 hours now with FreeTaxUSA and still nothing. Is this normal? How long does it typically take for FreeTaxUSA to tell you they've accepted your return before it goes to the IRS? Starting to get a little nervous since I'm counting on that refund for some car repairs!

FreeTaxUSA can take a bit longer to show the "accepted" status compared to TurboTax, but there's nothing to worry about! This is totally normal. FreeTaxUSA typically takes 24-48 hours to update your status to "accepted" after you've submitted. TurboTax might show it faster, but that doesn't mean the IRS is processing it any quicker - it's just a difference in how the software communicates status updates. You can check your status by logging into your FreeTaxUSA account and looking at your filing dashboard. Sometimes the email notifications can be delayed too, so checking directly on the site is your best bet. If it's been more than 3 business days, then you might want to double-check.

•Is there a way to speed up the acceptance process? I also just switched from TurboTax to FreeTaxUSA this year and I'm getting anxious because I need my refund ASAP. Does paying for deluxe make it faster?

•There's no way to speed up the acceptance process as this is dependent on FreeTaxUSA's system and the IRS processing time. The Deluxe upgrade doesn't affect processing speed - it just gives you additional features like audit assistance and amended returns. The actual IRS processing time for your refund will be the same regardless of which tax software you use. Once your return is accepted by the IRS, you can track your refund directly on the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool or the IRS2Go app, which is typically more accurate than any tax preparation software's tracking.

I switched to FreeTaxUSA last year after using TurboTax for like 8 years. Same experience - was freaking out because the acceptance took almost 2 days when I was used to TurboTax's super quick notification. But honestly, https://taxr.ai helped me understand why this happens - the different tax prep services have different notification systems but the actual IRS processing time is identical. I used taxr.ai to upload my documents and verify everything was correct before submitting, which gave me peace of mind during the waiting period.

•How does taxr.ai work with FreeTaxUSA? Do you just upload your forms there first before entering into FreeTaxUSA? I'm curious because I've been paranoid about making mistakes.

•Does taxr.ai access your bank info or personal data? Sounds sketchy to upload tax docs to a random site. Not sure I trust something not mainstream yet.

•With taxr.ai, you can upload your W-2s, 1099s, and other tax documents before you start entering them into FreeTaxUSA. It checks them for accuracy and helps interpret confusing forms, so you're less likely to make entry errors. It basically confirms you're entering everything in the right places. Your security concerns are valid, but taxr.ai uses bank-level encryption and doesn't store your documents after analysis. It's just a verification tool, not a replacement for tax software. I was skeptical too until I researched their security protocols.

Ok so I was super skeptical about taxr.ai mentioned above but decided to give it a try while waiting for my FreeTaxUSA acceptance. Wow - actually super helpful! I uploaded my 1099-NEC that I was confused about (first year freelancing) and it explained exactly where everything needed to go in FreeTaxUSA. My return just got accepted this morning (took about 36 hours total with FreeTaxUSA) and I'm pretty confident it's correct. Definitely less stressful than guessing!

If you're still waiting and getting anxious about your refund, you might want to try calling the IRS directly to confirm everything's okay. I know that sounds like a nightmare (been there), but I used https://claimyr.com last year and it saved me literal hours of waiting on hold. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c - basically they wait on hold with the IRS for you and call you when an agent is ready to talk. After FreeTaxUSA took 3 days to show "accepted" for me, I got paranoid and called the IRS, which confirmed everything was actually fine.

•Wait how does this work? Sounds like a scam tbh. How do they get you connected to your specific tax case with the IRS? Do they need your SSN or personal info?

•This sounds like BS. IRS doesn't let third parties just connect you like that. And even if they did, I bet they charge like $50 for something you could do yourself for free if you're just patient.

•It's not a scam at all! They don't need your personal info or SSN. All they do is wait in the IRS phone queue for you. When they reach an agent, they connect you directly to that agent - you handle all the personal verification yourself. Think of it like a placeholder in line. I had the same reaction at first, but it works because they're not accessing any of your tax information. They're just dealing with the hold time. And yeah, there is a cost, but when I was freaking out about my refund last year, the time saved was completely worth it to me rather than spending 3+ hours on hold myself.

Well I feel like an idiot. I was 100% sure Claimyr was a scam (see my comment above) but after waiting on hold with the IRS for TWO HOURS yesterday and getting disconnected, I gave in and tried it. They got me connected to an IRS agent in about 45 minutes while I just went about my day. The agent confirmed my FreeTaxUSA return was already in their system even though the software still showed "pending." Saved me tons of stress and another wasted afternoon on hold.

Former TurboTax user here too. FreeTaxUSA typically takes 24-72 hours to show acceptance in my experience (used it for 3 years now). Don't worry if it's not immediate like TurboTax. One thing to know - FreeTaxUSA's tracking isn't as robust as TurboTax. Once it shows "accepted," start using the official IRS "Where's My Refund" tool instead for more accurate updates.

•Does FreeTaxUSA give you an estimated refund date like TurboTax does? I switched this year to save money but I really liked knowing approximately when I'd get paid.

•FreeTaxUSA doesn't provide as detailed of an estimated refund date as TurboTax does. They'll show when your return is accepted, but for actual refund timing, you'll need to use the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool. This actually gives you more accurate information anyway, since it comes directly from the IRS rather than an estimate from the tax software. Once your return shows as "accepted" in FreeTaxUSA, just go to the IRS website and use their tool with your filing status, exact refund amount, and SSN to track the actual deposit date.

Anyone else notice that FreeTaxUSA acceptance times are much faster if you file early in the season? I filed in late January and got acceptance notification in like 20 hours. My brother filed last week and it took 3 days for the same notification. I think they get backed up closer to the deadline.

•Definitely! I file every February (early bird!) and usually see acceptance within a day. My partner waits until April every year and always complains about the delay. Same with actual refund processing - early filers seem to get faster service from the IRS too.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed with FreeTaxUSA on Tuesday night and it's Friday morning with still no acceptance notification. Coming from TurboTax where I'd get that green checkmark almost instantly, this is definitely nerve-wracking. But reading all these comments is really reassuring - sounds like 24-72 hours is totally normal for FreeTaxUSA. I'm going to check my account directly instead of waiting for the email notification since a few people mentioned that can be delayed. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

•Welcome to the FreeTaxUSA waiting club! 😅 I just went through this exact same anxiety last month. Filed on a Wednesday night and didn't get the acceptance email until Saturday afternoon - so almost 3 full days. I kept refreshing my email and checking the FreeTaxUSA portal obsessively. One tip that helped me stay sane: set up the IRS account online at irs.gov so you can track your return directly once it does get accepted. That way you're not dependent on FreeTaxUSA's slower notification system. The IRS "Where's My Refund" tool updates much more reliably than waiting for emails from tax software companies. Hang in there - the savings vs TurboTax are so worth this minor stress!

I'm in the exact same boat as you! Filed with FreeTaxUSA Wednesday evening and it's now Friday afternoon with no acceptance notification yet. Coming from years of using TurboTax where I'd get that instant gratification, this waiting period is definitely anxiety-inducing. But after reading through all these responses, it sounds like 48-72 hours is completely normal for FreeTaxUSA's system. I actually just logged into my FreeTaxUSA account directly (instead of waiting for email) and can see my return status there. Might be worth checking yours too since some people mentioned the email notifications can lag behind the actual portal updates. The money I'm saving vs TurboTax will definitely be worth this temporary stress once I get that acceptance confirmation!
