Filed about Recovery Rebate Credit but already received it - Now have 570/971 codes and no DDD
Ugh, I'm so frustrated right now! š¤ Anyone else make the mistake of claiming they didn't receive their Child Tax Credit advance payment on their return, but then realized afterward that you actually DID get it? Now I've got those dreaded 570 and 971 codes showing up on my transcript with no direct deposit date in sight. I'm usually pretty good with keeping track of these things (I've been filing for years) but with all the different payments last year, I honestly forgot which ones I received! I'm kicking myself now. How long is this going to delay my refund? I'm seriously worried now. Any insights would be SO appreciated! š

This is actually a pretty common situation this tax season. According to the IRS.gov forums and several tax filing groups I follow, when you claim a credit you've already received, it triggers what's called a "manual review" process. The code 570 indicates a temporary freeze on your account while they verify, and the 971 typically means they're sending you a notice explaining the adjustment. Based on what I've seen online, the timeline varies but most people are seeing resolution in 4-8 weeks from when the codes appear. The IRS has to verify your payment history against their records, make the adjustment, and then release the remainder of your refund minus the credit amount you already received.

Thanks for the clear explanation. I've been trying to figure this out for days. Wish the IRS website just explained it this directly.

In my experience from last year, these adjustments can sometimes process faster than the 4-8 week timeframe. I had a similar situation with claiming a credit I'd already received, and my transcript updated about 3 weeks after the codes appeared.

Went thru this exact thing last yr w/ the 3rd stim payment. Totally forgot I got it & claimed RRC on my return. Got the 570/971 combo, then a letter like 2 wks later, and refund (minus the adjustment) hit my acct about 10 days after that. Def annoying but at least they don't hold your ENTIRE refund hostage forever!

I think, based on what you're describing, you're likely experiencing what's commonly called a "math error adjustment." In most cases, the IRS will probably adjust your return automatically and send you the remainder of your refund, though it might take some time. I've found that understanding exactly what's happening with your transcript can really help reduce anxiety during this waiting period. Have you considered using something like https://taxr.ai to analyze your transcript? It might give you more specific insights about your particular situation and possibly even estimate when you might receive your refund. I'm curious if anyone else has used tools like this for similar situations?

Wait, so does everyone get a letter in the mail first before the refund gets released? Or do some people just see their transcripts update with a DDD without any prior notification? š¤ The waiting game is killing me lol

I need to know this too! My bills are due next week and I'm counting on this refund!

From what I've seen, most people do receive the letter first, but your transcript will often update before the physical letter arrives. The good news is that once your transcript updates with a refund date, that's usually very reliable regardless of whether you've received the letter yet.

Do we need to respond to the letter? Will that slow things down more? I'm worried.

Has anyone who filed around January 29th with this issue received their refund yet? I'm trying to figure out if there's a pattern to the processing times.

I experienced this exact scenario last year with the third stimulus payment. When analyzing your situation, there are a few key things to note: 1) Did your 971 code come after the 570 code on your transcript? 2) What's the date associated with your 971 code? In my case, the 971 appeared 7 days after the 570, and the date on the 971 was when they mailed the notice. I received the notice about 5 days after that date, and my transcript updated with a DDD approximately 2 weeks after the notice date. Have you checked your Account transcript as well as your Return transcript? Sometimes they contain different information that can help piece together the timeline.

I was in this EXACT situation and was going crazy trying to get information! After weeks of frustration, I finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) to get through to an IRS agent. ā¢ Saved me HOURS of hold time and redialing ā¢ Agent confirmed they were adjusting my refund due to the credit issue ā¢ Gave me an exact timeframe for resolution ā¢ Explained exactly what the notice would say Such a relief to finally get real answers instead of guessing! My refund (minus the adjustment) came through exactly when the agent said it would.

I've been through this process a few times now, and here's what typically happens: Step 1: IRS identifies the discrepancy with your claimed credit Step 2: They place a temporary freeze (570) while they review Step 3: They decide to adjust your return and send a notice (971) Step 4: About 1-3 weeks after the notice date, they release the freeze Step 5: You get a direct deposit date Step 6: Refund arrives (minus the credit amount you already received) It's frustrating, but they're actually pretty efficient with these specific types of adjustments. I've seen people in your situation get their refunds within 30 days of the codes appearing. Hang in there - it's a common mistake this year and they have a process for handling it.

Have you considered calling the IRS directly? Compared to other issues like identity verification or audits, this type of adjustment is relatively straightforward and an agent might be able to give you an exact timeframe. When I had a similar issue with incorrectly claiming a credit, the agent was able to tell me exactly when my refund would be processed. It's worth a try, especially if you're depending on the refund for something important.

I... might be in the same boat. I'm not entirely sure if I received that payment or not, but I did claim it on my return. Now I have those same codes and I'm nervously waiting. I've heard that sometimes these adjustments can happen pretty quickly, while other times they can drag on. I suppose it depends on how backlogged the IRS is at the moment.

Just wanted to share some good news - I had this EXACT situation last month! Claimed I didn't get the Child Tax Credit advance when I actually did. Got the 570/971 codes, received a notice about 10 days later explaining the adjustment, and then my transcript updated with a DDD exactly 14 days after the notice date. The refund hit my account right on schedule, just minus the amount I had incorrectly claimed. So hang in there - the system is actually working pretty efficiently for these types of adjustments!

Was your refund exactly $1,400 less than what you were expecting? I'm trying to calculate how much I'll actually get after they make the adjustment.
