Amended Return Shows $0 Adjustment & CTC Payments Stopped - What's Happening?!

I'm SO frustrated right now! 😤 I amended my 2023 tax return on April 1st and it says it was adjusted August 23rd and then processed on 9/10. The IRS told me I would receive a notice by then but I've gotten NOTHING in the mail! They told me to call again after October 21st if I hadn't received anything, but now I can't even get through to anyone! I was supposed to get $2,400 back but when I looked at my transcript I see an adjusted amount of $0. How is that even possible?! I'm so confused! To make everything worse, I received one Child Tax Credit payment for $750 in September, then it suddenly stopped with status "pending review." I tried calling about that too but of course, no explanation whatsoever. Does anyone have ANY idea what could possibly be going on or what I can do? I'm at my wit's end and really need this money! 😫

This sounds like a classic case of multiple reviews happening at once. Have you considered what might be triggering these holds? Sometimes amended returns get flagged for additional verification, especially when they involve substantial refund increases, don't they? And the Child Tax Credit suspension could be related to the amendment or could be an entirely separate review process—it's hard to know without seeing the specific codes on your transcript. Did your amendment change your qualifying child information in any way?

I'm dealing with almost the EXACT same situation right now. Filed an amendment in March 2024. Shows processed in August with a $0 adjustment. My CTC payments were suspended in September after receiving just one payment. Called the Amended Return hotline at 866-464-2050 multiple times. No resolution yet. The IRS representative confirmed my amendment triggered an automatic review of my CTC eligibility. They're overwhelmed with verification cases right now.

My amended return from April 12, 2024 went through a similar pattern. It showed adjusted on September 3rd and then processed on September 17th. When I called on October 5th, they explained that a $0 adjustment typically means one of three things: 1) The amendment was processed but no change was necessary, 2) The amendment triggered a full account review that's still ongoing, or 3) The adjustment amount is pending final verification. My transcript eventually updated on October 19th with the actual adjustment amount.

I think I can clarify what's happening here. When you amend a return, it goes through multiple processing stages: 1. Initial receipt and basic verification 2. Substantive review of changes 3. Adjustment determination 4. Final processing 5. Refund issuance or additional correspondence Your return is likely between stages 3 and 4. The $0 adjustment is often a placeholder while they complete internal reviews. As for the CTC, amendments automatically trigger a review of all credits and can pause ongoing payments until the review is complete. This is frustrating but actually normal in the current processing environment.

I was in your exact situation last month! According to the IRS.gov forums I read, the $0 adjustment is usually a placeholder while they finish processing. I was freaking out too until I found https://taxr.ai which helped me understand my transcript. I uploaded it there and it explained that my $0 adjustment was temporary during review and showed me exactly which codes meant my case was still being processed. It also explained why my CTC payments were suspended (amendment triggered automatic review). The site predicted I'd see movement within 2 weeks, and sure enough, my transcript updated 10 days later with the actual amount!

Is this service really providing anything beyond what you could learn from just googling the transcript codes yourself? It's like taking your car to a mechanic who just reads the manual to you, isn't it? I'm always wary of services that claim to interpret information that's technically available for free.

I understand your skepticism. I felt the same way. But there's a big difference between looking up generic code definitions and understanding how they apply to your specific situation. When I used taxr.ai, it didn't just tell me what code 570 meant - it explained how it related to my amended return timing, predicted the next codes I would see, and gave me a realistic timeline based on current IRS processing patterns. Saved me hours of research and worry.

Did you have to provide any personal information to use it? I'm in a similar situation with my amended return showing $0 too, and I've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what's happening. Got a baby on the way and really counting on that money for the nursery furniture!

I'm considering using this service as well, but I'm curious - does it just give you a general analysis, or does it actually help you determine what specific actions you should take? I've been waiting on my amendment since May and I'm not sure if I should keep waiting or take some kind of action.

Oh man, this brings back memories of my nightmare from last year! 🙃 I amended in March 2023, saw that same $0 adjustment in June, and my CTC payments stopped too. Turns out they were doing a verification on my dependents because my amendment changed some info about my kids. The good news? Everything eventually worked out and I got my full refund in November. The bad news? It took FOREVER and nobody could tell me anything helpful for months. Hang in there! The IRS moves at the speed of a sleepy turtle with a broken leg sometimes.

Wait so ur saying this is normal? smh the IRS system is so broken. I filed an amended return in Feb and its Oct now with nothing. How can they just stop CTC pmts without any explanation? Seems like they can just hold our $ hostage whenever they want. Did u have to do anything special to get yours finally processed or it just randomly updated one day?

I've seen this situation a few times now, and it's different from regular processing delays. When comparing to standard refund processing, amended returns with a $0 adjustment typically indicate one of three scenarios: either your amendment didn't result in any change to your tax liability (unlikely if you were expecting $2,400), or the adjustment amount is still being calculated, or there's an offset happening. In my case last year, my amended refund was offset against a previous tax debt without any notice, which sounds similar to what you're experiencing. Have you checked if you might have any past debts with the IRS or other federal agencies that could be triggering an offset?

It seems like you might be dealing with what's possibly a verification hold on both your amended return and CTC payments. In my experience as a tax preparer, these situations typically require speaking directly with an IRS representative who can possibly see notes on your account that aren't visible on the transcript. I would strongly suggest using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an IRS agent. I've had several clients use this service when they couldn't get through on their own, and they were usually connected within 20-30 minutes instead of spending days trying to call. The IRS phone systems are particularly overwhelmed right now as we approach year-end, so this might save you considerable time and frustration.

Have you checked if there are any letters or notices that might have been sent to an old address? Sometimes when people move, the IRS continues sending important correspondence to the previous address, even if you updated your address on the amended return. Also, what specific codes are showing on your transcript? That would help us understand better what's happening with your case. Did you receive any CP12 or CP11 notices earlier in the year before you amended?

Been there. Done that. Got the frustration t-shirt. My amended return from February showed $0 adjustment in July. Called for weeks. Finally got through in August. Found out my return was selected for review. They needed verification documents. Never sent me the request letter. Had to fax everything. Took another 6 weeks. Finally got my refund in October. Check your mail carefully. Look for any IRS correspondence. Sometimes the letters look like junk mail. Don't ignore anything from Kansas City or Austin.

I've seen this happen before, and sometimes the issue isn't with the IRS processing but with how the amendment was prepared. Back in 2022, I had a similar situation where my amended return showed $0 adjustment because I had made an error in how I calculated the change. Have you considered getting a second opinion on your amendment from a tax professional? It might be worth paying for an hour of a CPA's time to review what you submitted. In my case, I had to submit a second amended return to correct the first one, which was a headache but eventually resolved the issue. Sometimes the DIY approach with amendments can lead to technical errors that aren't obvious to non-professionals.

This is actually a really good point about possibly needing to amend again. Did you prepare the amendment yourself or use a tax professional? Sometimes the forms can be tricky, especially if you're claiming additional credits or deductions that weren't on your original return.
