Filed 2/9 with TT - Transcript Shows DDD of 3/28 to Credit Karma - When Should Friend Expect Refund?

Posting for a friend who doesn't use Reddit (and I don't deal with taxes anymore ๐Ÿซ ) She filed exactly on February 9th through TurboTax. She received a refund advance and has fees that will be deducted from her tax refund. Her transcript shows a direct deposit date of March 28th to Credit Karma. Should she expect the deposit tomorrow (March 27th) or on the actual date of March 28th? I want to give her the most accurate information possible since she's counting on this money.

With a DDD (Direct Deposit Date) of 3/28 going to Credit Karma, your friend should expect to receive her funds on 3/28, not before. Since she got a refund advance and has fees coming out, the process works differently than a standard direct deposit. Have you confirmed if she's using Credit Karma Money or if this is just the bank account she provided through TurboTax? This distinction matters for timing expectations.

I'm wondering about a few details that might affect the timing. Did your friend receive a full refund advance or partial? And do you know approximately what percentage of her refund is being taken for fees? Sometimes these factors can influence when the remaining funds are released.

Not OP, but I had a similar situation last year. When you get a refund advance through TT and they take fees out, they actually have to wait for the IRS to send the money to them first, then they take their cut and forward the rest to your account. I got my refund exactly on my DDD, not a day sooner, even though some people with direct deposit to their own accounts sometimes get it early.

Does Credit Karma hold the funds for processing, or do they make them available immediately once received? I've heard some banks hold tax refunds for 24 hours as a fraud prevention measure.

Thanks for all the responses! She got a partial advance of $500 when she filed. The fees are around $150 total (filing fees + advance fee). She's using Credit Karma Money as her actual bank account, not just for the tax filing. I'll let her know to expect it on the 28th and not get her hopes up for tomorrow ๐Ÿ˜… She's been checking her account hourly since yesterday lol

I received my refund through Credit Karma on March 14th this year, and it posted exactly on the DDD date shown on my transcript. Not a day earlier, not a day later. Last year was different though - got it a day early on April 19th when my DDD was April 20th. So it can vary, but with third-party fees involved, I'd count on the exact date.

Per IRS Publication 1345 (Rev. 1-2023), when refunds are routed through a third party who deducts fees (like TurboTax), the timing must adhere to the DDD. Section 5.5 specifically addresses this: "The financial institution must not make funds available prior to the appropriate direct deposit date." Your friend should expect it precisely on 3/28.

I completely understand her checking hourly - we've all been there! It's especially stressful when you're depending on that money. The waiting is the hardest part, but at least she has a confirmed date which is better than being in limbo.

OMG I was the SAME WAY last year! ๐Ÿ˜ญ I literally set alarms to check at midnight, 3am, 6am... it was ridiculous! Did she get any kind of email from TurboTax confirming the deposit date? Sometimes they send one out 24-48 hours before the deposit hits.

This situation is more complex than regular direct deposits. I've seen cases where people with refund advances through TT had to wait even longer than their DDD because of processing delays. When I had a similar issue last year, I spent 3 hours trying to reach the IRS to confirm everything was on track. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes who confirmed exactly when my deposit would arrive. If she's really anxious and wants definitive answers, having an actual IRS agent look at her file is surprisingly helpful. Compared to what I went through with my bank loan application, the tax refund process seems unnecessarily complicated!

Has your friend checked the IRS2Go app or the Where's My Refund tool on IRS.gov? Sometimes those will update with slightly different information than what shows on the transcript. I'm curious if it shows the same 3/28 date or something different?

In February 2023, I filed through TurboTax with fees coming out and a refund advance. My transcript showed a DDD of 2/22/23, but did I get it that day? No. Did I get it the day before? Also no. I actually received it at exactly 3:17 PM on 2/22/23. Why such a specific time? Because that's when TurboTax processed the batch that included my refund. They receive the funds from the IRS, deduct their fees, then initiate a transfer to your bank account. With Credit Karma being owned by Intuit (same as TurboTax), your friend might actually see it process slightly faster than I did, but I wouldn't count on it arriving before the 28th. Wouldn't it be nice if the system were more transparent about all these behind-the-scenes steps?
