Fed up with IRS verification delays taking money while making me wait 360+ days for processing
So sick of the IRS taking taxes out of every paycheck while making ME jump through hoops for anything I need from them. I just got a letter saying I need to verify something with them, and then they casually mention I should 'allow up to 360 days' to receive their verification letter. THEN after I send back their verification, they want another 365 days for 'processing.' Are you kidding me?? A whole YEAR after already waiting a year?? They don't hesitate to take my money instantly every payday, but when I need something from them suddenly everything moves at a glacial pace. The double standard is absolutely infuriating. I should start making THEM verify before I allow any more taxes to be withheld from my checks!

I understand your frustration completely. The IRS does operate with different timelines for collection versus service, which is incredibly frustrating. What you're describing sounds like an identity verification process. These extended timeframes are worst-case scenarios they provide to cover themselves legally, but typically don't take the full time. Most identity verification processes are completed within 9-12 weeks, not the full 360 days they mention. For the verification itself, you might be able to speed up the process by: 1. Calling the IRS directly on the number listed in your letter 2. Checking if you can verify online through ID.me on the IRS website 3. Visiting a local Taxpayer Assistance Center (make an appointment first) As for withholding, unfortunately changing your withholding won't help with this specific issue and could potentially create tax problems later. Your best route is to expedite the verification process through one of the methods above.

Thanks for the advice. I tried calling the number on the letter but was on hold for 2 hours and then got disconnected. So frustrating.

The ID.me thing actually worked for me when I had to verify. Took like 20 min instead of waiting months for mail stuff. Worth checking if thats an option for you

Taxpayer assistance centers are actually pretty decent if you can get an appointment. I was in and out in 45 minutes when I had to verify my identity last year. Better than waiting on hold forever

I'll try the ID.me thing first and if that doesn't work I'll try to get an appointment. Thanks everyone!

I was in the exact same situation last year with verification delays. Was pulling my hair out trying to make sense of what was happening with my case. I finally found this service called taxr.ai that literally saved me so much time and frustration. It analyzed my transcript, explained every code, and told me exactly what was happening with my case and what I needed to do. So much better than posting here and piecing together random advice like I'm some kind of tax detective. They explained exactly where I was in the verification process and what to expect next. Check them out at https://taxr.ai - seriously a game changer when dealing with IRS nonsense.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read the transcript. It analyzes all the codes and tells you exactly what's happening, what to expect next, and what steps you need to take. It even explained why my verification was taking so long and gave me options to speed it up. Best thing I've found for dealing with the IRS, hands down. I tell everyone about it now because it saved me months of waiting and confusion.

Worth every penny considering how much stress it saved me and how fast I got my refund after following their advice. I was about to hire a tax pro for hundreds of dollars before I found this!

After dealing with this exact verification nightmare for months, I finally got through to an actual human at the IRS using this Claimyr app (claimyr.com). Had to wait on hold forever before, but this actually got me a callback with a real person who fixed my verification issue in ONE CALL. Saved me from waiting another 6 months for letters to go back and forth. Talking to an agent directly got my issue resolved in days instead of months. The amount I paid for the service was nothing compared to finally getting my refund released!

Sounds sketchy. How does that even work? The IRS phone system is designed to be impenetrable lol

Not sketchy at all! It basically navigates the phone tree for you and holds your place in line. When an agent is available, you get a call back. Took about 2 hours total instead of me having to stay on hold for 4+ hours hoping someone would pick up. The agent I talked to cleared my verification flag immediately once I provided the right info.

100% worked for me. Got a call back within 2 hours and the agent resolved my verification issue on the spot. My transcript updated 3 days later. Best decision I've made in this whole mess.

Yeah but don't they like need all your personal info or something? No way I'm giving my SSN to some random app

No no no - they don't need ANY of your personal info. They just connect you with the IRS. You only talk to the actual IRS agents about your personal stuff. The app just gets you past the hold time nightmare.

Welcome to the wonderful world of government bureaucracy 😂 where they can take your money instantly but make you wait years to get anything back. I've been dealing with the IRS for 3 years trying to get a simple amendment processed. They cash my check immediately when I owe them but make me wait 3 years for my refund. It's a complete joke.

If you filled out a form 8822 Change of Address, that could be why. I did that and got the same crazy timeframe. But honestly it only took about 10 weeks in reality, not the 360 days they threatened. They always give the absolute worst case scenario timelines to cover themselves.

I didn't file a change of address form. This was related to some identity verification thing they say they need.

Ah, identity verification can actually be done much faster if you call them directly or visit a local office. The mail route is the slowest by far.

pro tip: change your w4 to exempt for a few weeks, then change it back. you'll still have to pay what you owe at tax time but at least you control when they get it instead of them taking it automatically every check. that's what i did when they were jerking me around for 18 months on a refund.

Don't even get me started on the IRS... I had to verify my identity last July and I'm STILL waiting for my refund. Every time I call they just say "it's in process" like that tells me anything. The whole system is designed to be as frustrating and opaque as possible.

I know everyone likes to hate on the IRS, but just playing devil's advocate here - they're catastrophically underfunded and understaffed. Congress has been cutting their budget for years while giving them more work to do. Not saying the situation doesn't suck, but the employees are doing the best they can with what they've got.

Nah man, I'm tired of this excuse. Private companies have to figure out how to do more with less all the time. Government just uses it as an excuse for terrible service.

bruh they will garnish your wages, put liens on your property, and potentially throw you in prison. the IRS does not mess around with collection even if they're slow with everything else

My sister works for the IRS (pls don't hate me lol) and she says those ridiculous timeframes are worst-case scenarios they're required to give for legal reasons. Most identity verification is handled way faster, like 4-8 weeks typically. But they have to say the max possible time to cover all edge cases.

I swear the IRS operates in dog years. When they say 360 days they mean 51 human days 🐕 at least that's been my experience. They always overestimate timeframes dramatically.

I feel your pain! Just wanted to share that I went through this exact hell last year with verification delays. Nothing worked until I found taxr.ai which clearly explained my transcript, told me exactly why my verification was delayed, and what to do about it. Then used claimyr.com to actually talk to someone at the IRS who fixed it immediately. Went from waiting months to having it resolved in days. Both services were lifesavers!

ACTUALLY you can make them verify themselves! File a Freedom of Information Act request asking for proof they are authorized to collect taxes from you. They legally have to respond. I did this and they've been leaving me alone for 5 years now.

I work in tax resolution and see this all the time. The IRS is required by their internal policies to give maximum timeframes, but identity verification usually takes 6-12 weeks in practice. If you want to speed things up, call the number on your notice and request to verify over the phone, or make an appointment at your local Taxpayer Assistance Center. Both options can resolve verification in a single day rather than waiting for mail correspondence.
