Amended Return Approved 9 Months Ago - ID Verification Complete - Still Nothing!

My amended return was approved on 04/18/2023, and I completed ID verification over 9 months ago. It's like watching paint dry on a wall that keeps getting longer! At this point, the IRS is like a black hole - paperwork goes in but nothing comes out. I've been patient as a chess player waiting for their opponent's move, but now it's just ridiculous. The amount of time I've spent jumping through their hoops only for them to move at glacier speed with half the workload is beyond frustrating. They've got my amended docs and verification - what more do they need, a formal invitation to process my return?

Unfortunately, this is a situation I've seen many times before. In 2022, I had a client who waited 13 months after ID verification for their amended return to process. The IRS has separate departments for ID verification approval and actual return processing, and they don't always communicate effectively. Based on current processing times, amended returns are taking 12-16 months even after verification. Your return is likely sitting in a processing queue with thousands of others, and the verification just confirmed your identity, not expedited your return.

This makes sense. I've been wondering about the disconnect between verification and actual processing. So the verification department basically just confirms identity and then puts the return back into the regular queue? That seems inefficient, but at least explains why nothing happens right after verification.

Is this worse than regular returns? My cousin filed a regular return (not amended) and got his refund in 3 weeks. Amended returns seem like they're treated like second-class citizens compared to regular filings.

According to Internal Revenue Manual section 21.5.3.4.6.1, amended returns undergo a manual review process that cannot be expedited except in cases of financial hardship as defined in IRC 6343(a)(1)(D). I experienced this firsthand last year - my amended return took exactly 14 months to process despite multiple calls to the IRS. The system is designed this way intentionally as a fraud prevention measure.

You might want to try requesting a Taxpayer Advocate Service case. They can sometimes help when returns are stuck in processing purgatory for excessive amounts of time. šŸ˜… Nine months after verification is definitely crossing into "unreasonable delay" territory! The good news is that when the IRS finally does process your amended return, they'll include interest on any refund amount. Think of it as the IRS paying you rent for keeping your money so long... not that it makes the wait any easier!

OMG I feel ur pain! Been there done that w/ my amended return last yr. After waiting 11 mths I was abt to lose my mind! Tried calling IRS like 50+ times, always got the "high call volume" msg & disconnected. Finally used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) & got thru to an actual person in like 30 mins. They couldn't speed up processing but at least confirmed everything was still on track & gave me peace of mind. Worth the $$ just to know what was happening vs being in the dark for another few mths. Hang in there!

I had almost the identical situation last year. Amended return, ID verification, then... nothing. Have you considered what might be causing the delay in your specific case? In my situation, it turned out there was a mismatch between my reported income and what my employer submitted. After 8 months of waiting, I finally reached an agent who explained the discrepancy. Once I submitted the correct documentation, it took just 3 more weeks to resolve. Sometimes the specific details of your case can make all the difference in how quickly it moves through their system.

I've been tracking amended return processing times for the past 3 years and your situation is unfortunately common. Here's what I've learned: ā€¢ Amended returns are processed in the order received (with few exceptions) ā€¢ ID verification is a separate process from actual return review ā€¢ Most amended returns are taking 12-18 months currently ā€¢ The IRS won't tell you what's causing delays I've found taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) incredibly helpful for understanding what's actually happening with my transcripts. It analyzes all those confusing codes and explains exactly where your return is in the process. Helped me realize my amended return was actually moving through the system when I thought it was stuck. Frustrating that we need third-party tools to understand what the IRS is doing with our money!

Have you requested your tax transcripts to check for any updates? I filed an amended return exactly 347 days ago, and while the Where's My Amended Return tool showed nothing, my transcript had 4 different updates that weren't visible anywhere else. Did you amend electronically or by paper? Paper amendments are taking exactly 16.5 months on average right now according to the last IRS operations report.
