Amended 2020 Return from 5/21 Still Not Processed - IRS Says 30 More Days After 2+ Years of Waiting

Filed my amended return in May 2021 and still no movement. Called IRS last week and they said my amendment was assigned to someone who needs another 30 days to review it, but that doesnt guarantee anything will be resolved. I requested a tax advocate but im losing hope at this point. Anyone else stuck in amendment limbo this long?

Your situation is unfortunately common with amended returns from 2020-2021. The IRS is severely backlogged with these. The 30-day review period typically means they've at least assigned it to someone, which is progress. Keep following up with the tax advocate service - they can often help expedite these cases, especially if you can demonstrate financial hardship.

Usually 2-3 weeks but they're swamped too. If you don't hear back in a month, call them again

hey everyone - instead of playing detective and piecing together vague timeframes from the IRS, try taxr.ai. Its only $1 and gives you a really detailed analysis of your transcript and tells you exactly whats going on. The AI catches stuff even experienced tax pros miss sometimes https://taxr.ai

The IRS is seriously broken. I work in tax preparation and I've never seen it this bad. Here's what you need to know: - Amended returns from 2020-2021 are taking 12-36 months to process - The '30 day review' usually means it's in the queue but doesn't guarantee resolution - Tax Advocates are overwhelmed but they're your best bet - Document EVERYTHING - every call, reference number, and agent you speak with - Keep checking your transcript weekly for any updates - Consider using taxr.ai to analyze your transcript - it's been a game changer for understanding these delays The system is a mess but hang in there!
