Does it actually take 16 days to receive verification letter from IRS?

Anyone know how long it really takes to get that verification letter from the IRS? They told me 16 days when I called after my identity verification online didn't work. Its been 13 days now and Im starting to worry. Really need my refund and don't wanna wait any longer than I have to. Called again today and they said just keep waiting but couldn't tell me if it was actually mailed yet. Has anyone actually received one of these verification letters recently? How long did yours take?

Tax professional here. The IRS generally sends identity verification letters (CP01 or 5071C letters) within 2-3 weeks, but it can sometimes take longer depending on their current backlog. The 16-day timeframe they gave you is fairly standard but not guaranteed. A few things to note: - The countdown typically starts from when they process the request for the letter, not when you called - Mail delivery times vary by location - If you don't receive it within 20-25 days, you should call back You mentioned your online verification didn't work - was this through ID.me or the IRS Identity Verification Service? Sometimes trying again after a few days works. Also, have you checked your transcripts online to see if there's any movement on your return?

Thanks for the info! I tried going through id.me but it couldn't verify me for some reason. I don't have access to my transcripts cause I need to verify my identity first lol. Catch 22 right there.

0 coins

Yeah that's definitely frustrating! The ID.me system can be really picky. Did they give you any specific reason it couldn't verify you? Sometimes it's just a technical glitch.

0 coins

Nope, just said they couldn't verify my identity and I should request a letter. So thats what I did. Now just waiting... and waiting...

Same thing happened to my wife last year. Letter took 19 days to arrive. Hang in there!

IDme is such trash. I had to try 5 differint times before it worked for me. Kept saying my drivers license was invalid 🙄

Honestly waiting on the IRS is the worst. I was in your exact situation last year and got so frustrated trying to piece together what was happening with my return. Finally found taxr.ai and it made everything so much clearer. It analyzed my transcript and explained exactly what was going on with my verification hold and projected timeline. Saved me so much anxiety instead of just blindly waiting. Check it out at https://taxr.ai if you're tired of guessing what's happening with your return.

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

0 coins

It's actually pretty comprehensive! It analyzes all your transcript codes and translates them into plain English, shows you where your return is in the process, and gives you projected timelines based on similar cases. It even flagged issues I didn't know were there. Best tax tool I've ever used hands down. My entire family uses it now whenever we file.

another app asking for money? idk seems sketchy

0 coins

I get the skepticism - I felt the same way! But it's completely legitimate and secure. They don't ask for sensitive info like SSNs or banking details. You just upload your transcript and it does the analysis. Seriously saved me WEEKS of stress trying to decipher IRS codes and wondering when I'd get my refund.

I was stuck waiting forever for my verification letter too. After two weeks of nothing, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual IRS agent on the phone. Got my issue resolved in one call instead of waiting for that stupid letter. Agent confirmed my identity over the phone and released my refund. Can't even tell you how much stress that saved me - talking to an actual human made all the difference.

0 coins

How does that even work? Whenever I call IRS I just get the "due to high call volume" message and they hang up 🤔

0 coins

That's exactly what was happening to me! Claimyr basically navigates the phone system for you and calls you back when they get an agent on the line. Then you just pick up and talk to the IRS directly. Totally worth it since I got my refund released right away instead of waiting weeks more.

0 coins

Does it cost money? Nothing's free these days 😒

0 coins

Yeah there is a fee, but honestly it was the best money I've spent all year considering it got me my $3400 refund weeks earlier than if I'd kept waiting for that letter. Time is money ya know?

0 coins

omg this actually works?? I've been trying to call for literally a month

0 coins

100% works. I was skeptical too but I was desperate after waiting so long. Had an agent on the phone within an hour.

0 coins

Mine took exactly 18 days last month. Just barely outside what they told me (14 days). Verification was pretty simple once I got the letter tho. Had my refund about 10 days after I completed it.

The IRS is completley overwhelmed right now so everything is taking longer than normal. My neighbor works there and says they're understaffed by like 30%. Plus they've been hit with tons of identity theft cases so they're being extra careful with verification. System is broken honestly.

THIS!!! 👆 My cousin works for IRS too and said same thing. They're drowning in backlog.

0 coins

Yeah people don't realize Congress has been cutting their budget for years. How are they supposed to function with 1990s computer systems and half the staff they need? 🤦‍♀️

0 coins

exactly! and then everyone gets mad at the workers who are just trying to keep up. whole system needs an overhaul but nobody wants to fund it.

Why don't you just go to your local IRS office in person? That's what I did. Made an appointment, showed up with my ID, and they verified me on the spot. Way faster than waiting for mail.

0 coins

Wait that's an option? Nobody told me I could do that! How do you make an appointment?

0 coins

Call 844-545-5640 to make an appointment at your local Taxpayer Assistance Center. They're usually booked out a week or two but still faster than waiting for mail! Just bring 2 forms of ID.

Thank you SO MUCH! Gonna try this tomorrow!

Lol 16 days... mine took 37 days last year 😭 The IRS doesn't live in the same reality as the rest of us. "2-3 weeks" means "whenever we get around to it" in IRS speak.

0 coins

Anyone else notice that IRS timelines are complete fiction? They told me 21 days to process my return. Then they told me 60 days to review. Then they told me 45 days to issue my refund. It's like they just make up numbers to get us off the phone.

0 coins

omg yes! I swear they have a random number generator they use when you ask about timeframes 🤣

0 coins

Their time estimates are like when your mom says "5 minutes" but you're actually at the store for 2 hours

0 coins

I wonder if they even know the real timelines themselves. Probably not, since everything is so backed up and different departments don't seem to communicate with each other.

I just got mine yesterday after waiting 22 days. Envelope was postmarked 5 days before I received it, so looks like they took about 17 days to actually send it. USPS is also slow af right now.

0 coins

This is super helpful to know. I'm on day 13 so I guess I should expect to wait at least another week or so.

0 coins

Uhmm maybe check if you moved recently? My verification letter got sent to my old address even though I had updated my address with the IRS 3 months earlier. Had to call and request a new one sent to correct address. What a nightmare.

Have you tried checking the Get My Payment tool on the IRS website? Sometimes it will show if there's an issue with your return or if they've mailed correspondence. Worth a shot while u wait.

0 coins

Yeah I check it everyday but it just says "Your return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available." Super helpful right? 🙄

0 coins

Classic IRS. As helpful as a screen door on a submarine.

Sometimes those letters never come at all. My brother waited 6 weeks for his verification letter last year, and when he called to ask what was happening, they said they never actually sent it due to a "system error" 🤡 Had to restart the whole process. I'd definitely call back if you don't get it by day 20.

0 coins

OK listen here's the trick: Call your local congressperson's office. They have special IRS liasons who can help. I waited 4 weeks for my letter last year, nothing came. Called my congressman, had the issue resolved in 3 days. They can light a fire under the IRS like nothing else.

0 coins

THIS IS THE WAY!!!! 💯 I did the same thing when my return was stuck in limbo for 3 months. Congressional inquiry fixed it in a week!

0 coins

Can confirm this works. IRS basically drops everything to respond to congressional inquiries. It's like a cheat code for tax issues.

16 days is what they tell everyone but I haven't seen anyone actually get it that fast. My wife and I both had to verify last year - hers came in 24 days, mine took 31 days. Same household, filed together. Make it make sense.

0 coins

Been through this exact same situation twice now. First time took 19 days, second time was 14 days. The 16-day estimate is actually pretty accurate in my experience, but like others said, that's from when they process the request not when you first called. One thing that helped me was setting up informed delivery with USPS so I could see what mail was coming each day. At least then you know if the letter is actually in transit. Also double check that your address on file with the IRS matches exactly what's on your most recent return - even small differences like "St" vs "Street" can cause delays. Hang in there, you're almost at the finish line! The actual verification process once you get the letter is pretty quick and straightforward.

I feel your pain - went through this exact same thing last year! My verification letter took 21 days to arrive, so you're definitely still within the normal range even though it's frustrating. A couple things that might help while you wait: - Try calling early in the morning (8-9 AM) when call volumes are lower - sometimes you can get better info about whether your letter was actually mailed - Make sure your mailbox is secure and check with neighbors in case it got misdelivered - If you're in a rush, definitely try that in-person appointment suggestion someone mentioned above - I wish I had known about that option! The waiting is absolutely the worst part, but once you get that letter the actual verification process is pretty quick. You should have your refund within 1-2 weeks after completing it. Keep checking your mail - it'll come!

0 coins

Thanks for sharing your experience! Yeah the waiting is definitely the hardest part. I've been checking my mailbox like 3 times a day at this point 😅 Good tip about calling early - I usually call in the afternoon when I'm on my lunch break but maybe morning would be better. Really hoping it shows up in the next few days!

I'm currently going through this same exact situation! Filed my return 3 weeks ago, tried the online ID verification multiple times but it kept failing, so I called and they told me to wait for the verification letter. It's been 12 days now and still nothing in my mailbox. What's really frustrating is that every time I call, I get a different agent who gives me slightly different information. One said 14-16 days, another said "up to 21 business days," and the last one couldn't even confirm if the letter had been generated yet. The inconsistency is maddening when you're just trying to get your own money back! I'm definitely going to try that in-person appointment suggestion - had no idea that was even an option. Also going to set up that USPS informed delivery thing to at least know what's coming. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, it's weirdly comforting to know I'm not alone in this bureaucratic nightmare!

I totally feel your frustration! Just went through this myself a few months ago and the inconsistent information from different agents was the most maddening part. Every person you talk to seems to have a different timeline or can't tell you anything concrete about where your letter actually is in the process. The in-person appointment route is definitely worth trying - I ended up doing that after waiting 3 weeks for a letter that never came. Had to wait about 10 days for the appointment but got everything resolved in one visit. Way less stressful than constantly checking the mailbox and wondering if it got lost. The USPS informed delivery is a game changer too - at least you'll know for sure if something is coming instead of just hoping. Hang in there, you'll get through this! The whole system is just painfully slow but you're definitely not alone in dealing with this mess.
