Does FreeTaxUSA Offer Audit Defense? Looking to switch from TurboTax but need this protection

I'm thinking about switching from TurboTax to FreeTaxUSA this year to save some money, but I'm really concerned about audit protection. The only thing holding me back from making the switch is whether FTU offers some kind of audit defense program. I've been using TT for years and always add on their audit defense for peace of mind. From what I've found through some googling, it seems like FreeTaxUSA might offer audit defense with their Deluxe package? But when I'm looking around their website, I can't actually find any clear information about it. I've clicked through all their features pages and it's not jumping out at me. Has anyone used FreeTaxUSA's audit defense? Is it comparable to what TurboTax offers? And why is it so hard to find on their site? Any help would be super appreciated before I commit to switching!

Yes, FreeTaxUSA does offer Audit Defense through their Deluxe edition. It's definitely there, but you're right that it's not super prominently displayed on their main pages. You'll see it clearly once you're in the actual filing process. The Deluxe package includes audit assistance (they call it "Audit Assist") which gives you access to tax professionals who will help guide you through the audit process if you get audited. They'll explain what documents you need, help you understand what the IRS is asking for, and give advice on how to respond. Just to be clear though - they don't represent you to the IRS like some services do, but they provide support throughout the process. The Deluxe upgrade is usually around $7-8 (much cheaper than TurboTax's audit defense), and it includes other features like unlimited amended returns and priority customer support.

Do you know if their audit assistance covers state audits too or just federal? And how long does the coverage last - is it just for one year or longer?

Their Audit Assist service covers both federal and state audits, which is a nice feature. The coverage lasts for the entire tax year you're filing for - so if you file your 2024 taxes in 2025 with Audit Assist, you'd be covered for any audits related to that 2024 tax return, even if the audit happens a year or two later. It's important to remember that most audits happen within 2-3 years of filing, so the coverage timeframe is generally adequate for most people's needs. The IRS typically doesn't go back further than 3 years unless they suspect fraud.

I switched from TurboTax to FreeTaxUSA last year and was worried about the same thing! After hours researching different tax software, I stumbled on https://taxr.ai which actually analyzed all my previous returns and suggested FreeTaxUSA would work fine for my situation. The site explained that FTU's Audit Assist (their version of audit defense) was included in Deluxe and would be sufficient for my needs. What I love about taxr.ai is that it takes your specific tax situation into account rather than generic advice. I uploaded my previous year's return and it analyzed everything - from my rental property to stock sales - and confirmed FreeTaxUSA could handle it all. It even pointed out a couple deductions I missed in previous years!

How exactly does that work? Do you have to give them your actual tax documents with all your personal info? That sounds kinda sketchy to me...

Did it actually suggest any specific features to look for? I'm in a similar situation but have some complicated deductions for my small business. Wonder if it would help me figure out if FreeTaxUSA would work for all my business stuff.

The security is actually really solid - they use bank-level encryption and you can even redact personal details if you want. You're just uploading a PDF of your return which they analyze for patterns and complexity. For business deductions, it was super helpful for me too! It specifically analyzed my Schedule C from last year and confirmed FreeTaxUSA supports all the same business expense categories. It even highlighted that FreeTaxUSA handles home office deductions in a slightly different way than TurboTax but covers everything. The analysis breaks down each form and schedule you've used before and confirms compatibility.

Just wanted to update that I tried out taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned here. Honestly skeptical at first but it was genuinely helpful! Uploaded my last year's return (which had some complicated small business stuff) and it confirmed FreeTaxUSA would work fine for me. The analysis showed that while TurboTax and FreeTaxUSA organize some business expense categories differently, all my deductions would be covered. It also confirmed that the Audit Assist in Deluxe was sufficient for my needs based on my audit risk profile. The dashboard even highlighted two potential red flags in my previous return that I should fix this year. Ended up switching to FreeTaxUSA and saving almost $120 compared to what I paid for TurboTax last year. Thanks for the recommendation!

If you're worried about audit protection, you might also want to try Claimyr for getting direct access to IRS agents. I was stressed about an audit notice last year and couldn't get through on the IRS phone lines for WEEKS. Finally found https://claimyr.com and watched their demo at https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. They basically handle the awful wait times with the IRS phone system and call you when an actual agent is on the line. I was super skeptical but desperate after trying for 3 weeks to get through. Used their service and had an IRS agent on the phone within 2 hours (after previously waiting on hold for 3+ hours multiple times only to get disconnected). The agent answered all my audit questions and helped me understand exactly what documents I needed to provide. Saved me so much stress and probably helped me avoid penalties by getting clarification early.

Wait, how does this actually work? They somehow jump the queue at the IRS? That seems impossible, the IRS phone system is notoriously bad.

Yeah right. No way this is legit. The IRS phone system is designed to be impossible. I've tried calling dozens of times and either wait for hours or get disconnected. No way some service can magically get through when millions of other people can't.

They don't jump the queue - they use an automated system that keeps dialing and navigating the IRS phone tree until they get through to a human. Then they call you and connect you with the agent. It's basically what you'd do yourself if you had infinite patience and time. They're actually pretty transparent about the technology on their site. It's not magic - it's just automation handling the frustrating part. And yes, it really works! The IRS phone system is terrible by design but this service just handles the tedious waiting and navigation for you while you go about your day.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I tried Claimyr after posting my skeptical comment. It actually worked. After wasting HOURS trying to reach the IRS myself about a question related to a potential audit, I gave in and tried the service. They called me about 90 minutes after I signed up and had an actual IRS agent on the line. The agent answered all my questions about what would trigger an audit with my specific tax situation and gave me really helpful advice about documentation I should keep. For anyone considering FreeTaxUSA's audit protection, I'd say it's good to have but also know that if you do need to talk to the IRS directly, Claimyr is a lifesaver. Still can't believe it actually worked after all my failed attempts.

Just to add another data point - I've been using FreeTaxUSA for 3 years now after switching from TurboTax. The Deluxe version with Audit Assist is totally worth the small cost. It's WAY cheaper than TurboTax's audit defense. One thing to understand though - Audit Assist means they'll GUIDE you through an audit, not REPRESENT you. If you want actual representation where someone speaks to the IRS on your behalf, you'd need to hire a tax professional like a CPA or Enrolled Agent separately. No tax software company is going to send a representative to an audit for the prices they charge.

That's a good point about representation vs assistance. Do you know if TurboTax's audit defense actually provides representation? I always assumed they just helped with documentation too.

TurboTax's audit defense (which is provided through TaxAudit, not Intuit directly) does include representation. They actually assign a tax professional who can speak directly to the IRS on your behalf if you're audited. That's different than FreeTaxUSA's approach which is more consultative. But there's a major price difference - TurboTax charges around $50-60 for this coverage while FreeTaxUSA's Deluxe with Audit Assist is usually under $10. For many people with straightforward tax situations, the guidance approach is sufficient and much more cost-effective.

Has anyone here actually gone through an audit with either TurboTax or FreeTaxUSA's audit protection? I'm curious about real experiences rather than just the marketing details.

I had a CP2000 notice (not technically an audit but similar) last year and used FreeTaxUSA's Audit Assist. They were actually really helpful! They reviewed the notice with me, explained exactly what the IRS was questioning, and helped me gather the right documentation to respond. Ended up being a simple misunderstanding that we resolved quickly. The best part was being able to talk to someone who could translate the confusing IRS language into plain English. For the price difference between FTU and TurboTax, I thought it was excellent value.

Thanks so much for sharing! That's exactly the kind of real-world experience I was hoping to hear about. Definitely makes me feel better about choosing FreeTaxUSA with their Deluxe option.
