Code 810 on Transcript with No Other Codes - Identity Verification Issue?
I've noticed something unusual compared to previous filing years. My transcript only shows a single 810 code with no other transaction codes - not even the standard 150 code. The transcript is essentially blank except for this 810. I understand my return isn't being processed because I need to verify my identity, but in previous years with verification issues, I'd still see other codes appear. Is this normal for identity verification holds in 2024? Most posts I've seen show multiple codes appearing together, not an isolated 810. I need this resolved promptly as I have financial obligations dependent on this timeline.

The 810 code by itself is indeed significant and indicates a specific situation: • Code 810 = Identity Verification Required (Freeze Code) • When appearing alone, it means your return was flagged BEFORE entering normal processing • Unlike typical processing where codes 150, 806, etc. appear first • This is an early-stage intervention that prevents any further processing • Your return is essentially in a pre-processing holding pattern This differs from situations where processing begins and then identity verification is requested later. The IRS has increased these pre-emptive holds in 2024 as part of enhanced fraud prevention measures.

•Are you saying the return hasn't even been officially accepted into the system yet? Would they have received an acceptance notification from their tax software in this case?

•I had this exact situation last year. Single 810 code, nothing else. In my case, I had moved to a new state and my address history triggered the verification. Took me 8 weeks to resolve because I didn't realize I needed to take action - I was waiting for more codes to appear like in previous years when I had minor issues.

•I'm not entirely sure, but I think this might be what they call a 'pre-refund verification hold.' The IRS started doing this more aggressively after all the pandemic fraud issues.

I experienced exactly the same situation 47 days ago. Single 810 code, completely blank transcript otherwise. Called the IRS exactly 6 times before reaching someone who confirmed it was an identity verification issue. I finally used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript after verification was complete - it showed me exactly when my return would process and explained that the 810 code alone means your return is in the pre-processing verification queue. It predicted my DDD within 2 days of actual deposit. The system is frustrating but at least having the transcript analyzed gave me some certainty in an otherwise maddening situation.

I went through this exact frustration last month. Here's what worked for me: Step 1: Go to idverify.irs.gov and try to verify online first Step 2: If that doesn't work (it didn't for me), call 800-830-5084 specifically for identity verification Step 3: When you call, have your previous year's return info, current return, and two forms of ID ready Step 4: After verification, wait about 9 weeks for processing to resume Step 5: Once verified, you'll see the 810 code release and normal processing codes appear I know how frustrating this limbo feels. The single 810 code is definitely the identity verification hold, and nothing else will happen until you complete that step.

•I had a similar situation but my transcript had the 810 code AND a 150 code. Does that mean my return got further in processing before getting flagged compared to OP's situation? Mine only took 3 weeks after verification to process.

•According to the IRS website, the timeline is supposed to be 9 weeks MAXIMUM after verification, but many people in the tax forums are reporting faster turnaround times in April 2024. Has anyone been verified recently and gotten their refund faster?

•This procedure aligns with Internal Revenue Manual 25.25.6, which outlines identity theft prevention measures. The isolated 810 code indicates a pre-refund verification hold under §6001 authority. I appreciate the clear explanation of the verification process.

Getting through to the IRS identity verification department is like trying to win the lottery while being struck by lightning... twice! 😂 After 3 days of calling that 800 number and getting nowhere, I used Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and got connected in about 15 minutes. Saved me hours of redial hell. The agent confirmed exactly what others here are saying - single 810 code means you need to verify before anything else happens. Anyone else have luck getting through to a human being at the IRS lately?

Think of your tax return like a train trying to enter a station. The 810 code is like a red signal light stopping the train before it even reaches the platform. Most tax issues are like delays that happen once the train is already at the station, but identity verification is like being stopped at the entrance. My sister ignored her 810 code last year thinking it was just part of normal processing - like waiting for a train conductor to wave you forward. She ended up waiting 5 months because she didn't realize she needed to actively verify her identity. Don't make the same mistake!

IRS verification systems have changed. Single 810 codes are more common now. It's a security measure. You must verify identity. No other processing will occur. Call 800-830-5084 specifically. Don't use the main IRS number. Have last year's AGI ready. Also bring current W-2 information. Verification takes 5-30 minutes. Processing resumes after verification. Current wait times are 6-9 weeks. Transcripts update weekly on Fridays. Check WMR daily.

I'm dealing with this exact same situation right now - single 810 code with nothing else on my transcript. It's reassuring to see I'm not alone in this! Based on what everyone is sharing, it sounds like this is the new normal for 2024 identity verification holds. I tried the online verification at idverify.irs.gov but it wouldn't accept my information, so I'll need to call. Has anyone had success with the online verification recently, or is everyone having to go through the phone verification process? Also wondering if there are any specific documents beyond last year's AGI and current W-2s that might speed up the phone verification process?

•@Yuki Tanaka I just went through the online verification process last week and it worked for me! The key is having your exact AGI from last year s'return - down to the dollar. I also needed my current address that matches exactly what s'on your current return, and a phone number they have on file. If you ve'moved recently or changed phone numbers, that might be why the online system is rejecting you. For the phone verification, I d'also suggest having a copy of your driver s'license or state ID handy, as they sometimes ask for the issue date or other details from it. The phone agents seem to have more flexibility than the automated online system.

I'm currently experiencing this same issue and it's been incredibly stressful not knowing what's happening! Thank you all for sharing your experiences - it really helps to understand that the single 810 code is actually the IRS stopping my return before it even enters normal processing. I've been checking my transcript daily wondering why no other codes are appearing, but now I realize that's exactly how it's supposed to look when you're in identity verification limbo. One question for those who have been through this - after you completed verification (whether online or by phone), how long did it take for your transcript to update and show that the 810 code was released? I'm trying to plan around some financial obligations and want to have realistic expectations for the timeline once I get through the verification process. Also, has anyone noticed if filing early vs. late in the season affects how quickly they process returns after identity verification is complete?

•@Dmitry Petrov I went through verification about 6 weeks ago and can share my timeline! After I completed phone verification took (about 20 minutes ,)my transcript updated the following Friday showing the 810 code was still there but with a note that verification was complete. Then it took exactly 3 more weeks before I saw the 810 release and normal processing codes 150, (846 appear.) My refund was deposited 2 days after the DDD showed up. Regarding filing timing - from what I ve'observed in various forums, people who filed in February seem to be getting processed slightly faster after verification compared to March/April filers. I think it s'because the IRS is less overwhelmed with the earlier batch. But honestly, once you re'in the verification queue, the processing time seems pretty consistent regardless of when you originally filed. The key is just getting through that verification step as quickly as possible!

I'm going through this exact same situation right now and this thread has been incredibly helpful! I've had just the single 810 code on my transcript for about 3 weeks now, and like everyone else, I was expecting to see other codes appear based on previous years' experiences. I tried the online verification at idverify.irs.gov twice but kept getting error messages saying they couldn't verify my information. I'm planning to call the 800-830-5084 number tomorrow morning. One thing I'm curious about - for those who successfully completed phone verification, did you need to have your actual tax return documents in front of you during the call, or was having last year's AGI and basic info sufficient? Also, I noticed some people mentioned that transcripts update on Fridays - is that a reliable pattern for seeing changes after verification is complete? I'm trying to figure out the best days to check for updates so I don't drive myself crazy refreshing daily! Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences here. It's such a relief to know this is normal for 2024 and not some unique problem with my return.

•@Yara Khoury For the phone verification, I d'recommend having both your current return and last year s'return handy, just in case. While they primarily need your prior year AGI, they sometimes ask follow-up questions about income sources, filing status, or dependents to confirm your identity. Better to be over-prepared than to have to call back! Regarding transcript updates - yes, the Friday update pattern is pretty reliable. The IRS batch processes most transcript updates overnight Thursday into Friday, so Friday morning is typically when you ll'see changes. However, after verification is complete, don t'expect immediate updates. In my experience, it took about 2-3 Friday cycles before I saw the 810 code release and normal processing begin. One tip: when you call tomorrow, try calling right at 7 AM when they open. The wait times are usually shortest first thing in the morning. Good luck!
