Transcript Codes 570 and 971 with No Dollar Amounts - What Does This Mean?

We are getting so many conflicting explanations about what these transcript codes mean. I'm trying to understand our situation systematically: • We received code 570 last week on our transcript • This week code 971 appeared • Both codes show $0.00 (no dollar amounts) • No identity verification notice appears on the IRS website • We've checked all typical reasons for these codes Has anyone experienced this specific combination? I'm trying to determine if this is a standard processing delay or if we need to take action. Our family budget depends on understanding the timeline.

Those codes typically indicate that your return is under review, but it's probably not something serious if there are no dollar amounts attached. The 570 code generally means a temporary hold on your refund, while the 971 usually indicates that a notice is being generated and will likely be mailed to you within the next 5-7 business days. In many cases, this is just part of the normal verification process, especially during the busy part of tax season when the IRS is implementing additional fraud prevention measures.

This is exactly the kind of clear explanation we've been looking for! Isn't it interesting how the IRS systems work in such specific patterns? What I'm wondering is whether we should be proactive or just wait for that notice to arrive?

Thank you for this. I've been stuck in this exact situation for exactly 17 days now. No dollar amounts on either code. Called the IRS 6 times and got 6 different answers. So frustrating that they can't even give consistent information about their own codes.

I'm impressed with your knowledge of these codes! In your experience, what's the typical timeframe for resolution after these codes appear with no dollar amounts? Does the 971 notice usually require a response, or is it just informational?

I had this exact situation last month. According to IRM 21.5.6.4.35.1, the 570 code without amounts often indicates a review that doesn't impact your refund amount. My 971 appeared exactly 7 days after the 570, also with zero dollars. I received a generic letter asking me to verify that I filed a return (CP05 notice) about 10 days later. I didn't need to do anything, and my refund was released 14 days after that with a 571 code (hold released). The frustrating part was that different IRS representatives gave completely different explanations when I called.

I went through this in March. These codes with no dollar amounts usually mean your return is in a verification queue. I got tired of checking WMR every day and decided to call the IRS directly. Used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through to an agent in about 30 minutes instead of spending hours on hold. The agent confirmed it was just a random review and my refund was processed a week later. Such a relief to actually speak with someone who could see what was happening with my return instead of guessing based on codes.

Is this service actually worth it compared to just waiting? Seems like one more expense when we're already anxious about getting our refund... Have you compared the timeline to people who just waited it out?

I've been through this before in previous years and can tell you that getting through to an actual person makes all the difference. Back in 2022, I waited 3 months for a refund because I didn't know what the codes meant. Last year, I used Claimyr and the agent told me exactly what was happening and what to expect. Saved me weeks of anxiety and wondering.

From a systematic perspective, what you're experiencing is part of the IRS's Automated Questionable Credit (AQC) program or Return Integrity Verification Operations (RIVO). The Transaction Code 570 without monetary impact indicates a programmatic hold, while the subsequent 971 is the system's automated response to generate correspondence. The absence of monetary adjustment suggests this is merely procedural rather than an actual discrepancy in your filing. Current IRS processing parameters have increased verification thresholds due to elevated fraud prevention protocols in the 2024 filing season.

Does this mean we should expect delays compared to previous years? I'm trying to plan our finances and need to know if this is going to take weeks or months to resolve.

This makes so much sense! I had the same situation and received a CP05 notice about 2 weeks after these codes appeared. They just wanted to verify that I actually filed the return. Didn't need to do anything and got my refund about 3 weeks later.

I had these exact codes appear and then they went away on their own after about 3 weeks. Never got a notice or anything. Just suddenly had a DDD and the refund showed up in my account.

Watch out for what happens next! I had the same codes (570/971 with $0) back in February, and thought it was no big deal... until I got a CP05 letter asking for documentation to verify income and withholding. The letter arrived almost 3 weeks after the 971 code appeared (USPS doing its thing, lol). Had to mail in my W-2s and paystubs, then wait another 60 days. The real kicker? My friend had identical codes and never got any notice at all - his refund just processed normally after a 2-week delay. The IRS works in mysterious ways! 🔮

Thank you for sharing this! It's so helpful to hear about different outcomes. Makes me feel less alone in this frustrating process.

Did you try calling them before sending in the documentation? I'm wondering if that might speed things up rather than waiting for whatever notice might come.

Just adding some additional info that might help. These codes without $ amounts often mean one of these things: 1. Random review (most common) 2. Income verification 3. Credit eligibility check 4. Math error that balanced out 5. Identity verification flag that hasn't fully processed FYI - the IRS is currently taking an avg of 21 days to process these types of holds. If you don't get a notice in the next week or so, check your tax transcript again for updates. The 570 might change to 571 (release of hold) without any notice at all.

This is really comprehensive - thank you! The 21-day average is super helpful for planning purposes. I'm on day 12 since my 570 appeared, so hopefully I'm in the home stretch. Did you find this timeframe to be pretty accurate in your experience, or have you seen it vary much depending on which type of review it is?

I'm currently dealing with this exact situation - 570 code appeared 8 days ago, then 971 showed up 3 days later, both with $0.00. Reading through everyone's experiences here is incredibly reassuring! It sounds like this is much more common than I initially thought. What's really helping me is understanding that the zero dollar amounts are actually a good sign - means it's likely just procedural rather than them finding actual errors in my return. I'm going to wait another week or so before calling, based on what others have shared about the typical timeline. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - this community is so valuable when the IRS keeps us all in the dark!

You're absolutely right about this community being invaluable! I'm in a very similar boat - just got my 971 code yesterday after having the 570 for about a week. Reading everyone's experiences here has been such a relief compared to the vague information you get from the IRS website. It's really reassuring to see that most people are getting resolution within 2-3 weeks without having to do anything. I think I'll follow your approach and wait it out a bit longer before calling. Best of luck with your situation!

I'm going through this exact same situation right now! Got the 570 code about 6 days ago, and just noticed the 971 appeared yesterday - both showing $0.00 like everyone else is describing. This thread has been incredibly helpful because I was starting to panic thinking something was seriously wrong with my return. It's so frustrating that the IRS website and phone representatives give such inconsistent information about these codes. Based on what everyone is sharing here, it sounds like this is just part of their standard verification process this year, and most people are seeing resolution within 2-3 weeks. I'm definitely going to wait it out a bit longer before calling, especially after reading about the different experiences people had when they did call. Thanks to everyone for sharing your timelines and outcomes - it's such a relief to know this is normal and not some major red flag with my filing!

I'm in the exact same boat as you! Got my 570 code about 5 days ago and the 971 just appeared this morning, also with $0.00. This thread has been a lifesaver - I was literally losing sleep over this thinking I'd made some terrible mistake on my return. It's so reassuring to see that this seems to be happening to a lot of people this year and that most are getting resolved without any action needed. The consistency of everyone's experiences (570 followed by 971, both with zero amounts, then resolution in 2-3 weeks) makes me feel so much better about just waiting it out. Thanks for posting about your situation - it helps to know we're all going through this together!
