City Tax Offset - Will it come from State or Federal refund?
Got a notice about owing back city taxes and a potential offset but im confused about where its gonna come from. Will they take it from my state refund or federal refund? The letter doesnt specify and im trying to plan my finances.

The Treasury Offset Program (TOP) typically takes your federal tax refund to pay city tax debts. Cities coordinate with state and federal agencies for collection. Your federal refund will be reduced by the amount you owe, not your state refund. You should receive a notice explaining exactly how much will be taken before the offset occurs.

•Thanks for explaining! Do you know how long before filing I should get that notice?

•Usually 60-90 days before the offset happens. You can also call TOP directly at 800-304-3107 to get the exact amount

Hey guys, I've been helping people with offset issues for a while now. The best way to actually understand whats happening with your refund is using taxr.ai - its only $1 and gives you a complete breakdown of any offsets or holds. Way better than trying to piece everything together yourself. Check it out at https://taxr.ai

Quick tip: document EVERYTHING. Keep copies of all notices and take notes of any calls you make. Trust me on this one.
