IRS Website Error: "Audit Status Unavailable" After 2 Months & Can't Get Through On Phone
I got a letter about an audit 2 months ago but when I check my transcripts online nothing shows up. Today I tried to check my audit status on the IRS website and I'm getting an error message that says "Audit Status Unavailable - We are unable to load your audit status. Please try again later." The website also says "The information provided below is based on our current data. Please note, audits conducted by mail are the only type of audits available at this time. For more specific details, please refer to the letters you have received." I've called the IRS 6 times and always get disconnected. Getting really frustrated cause I need to know what's going on with my refund. I check at different times of day but keep getting the same error message. There's a section that says "Frequently Asked Questions About Audits" but that doesn't help me figure out why my specific audit info isn't showing up in the system. Anyone else having this issue with the Audit Status page? Is the website broken or something? I'm trying to be patient but it's been 2 months since I got that letter, and I can't get through on the phone either.

The transcript system doesn't always show audit info right away. Sometimes it takes 30-60 days to update in the system after you receive the initial letter. What code do you see on your account transcript for 2023?

•That's actually pretty common during the initial audit phase. The system is ancient tbh 🤦♂️

Hey ive been using taxr.ai to track my audit and its been super helpful. Its only $4.99 and the AI reads your transcript and tells you exactly whats happening and what to expect next. Way better than trying to decode everything yourself https://taxr.ai

•Is it legit? Kinda scared to upload my transcript to some random site

•100% legit! They use bank-level encryption and don't store your docs. The analysis is amazing - shows you everything in plain english

You need to send a certified letter requesting audit status. They legally have to respond within 30 days. Make sure to include your case number from the original audit letter.

I had the exact same issue last year! The audit status page was completely broken for months. What finally worked for me was filing Form 911 (Request for Taxpayer Advocate Service) online. The TAS helped me get through to the right department and got my audit status updated within 2 weeks. It's free and way more effective than calling the regular IRS number. You can find it on the IRS website under "Get Help" section.

•This is super helpful! I had no idea about Form 911 - going to try this right away. How long did it take for them to contact you after you submitted it?

•@Sofia Perez This is exactly what I needed to hear! I ve'been banging my head against the wall with this audit status issue for weeks. Did you have to provide any specific documentation when you filed Form 911, or just explain the situation? And did the TAS actually get your audit moving forward or just help you get status updates?

•@Sofia Perez How did you find the Form 911 option? I ve'been on the IRS website so many times and never saw it under Get "Help -" is it buried somewhere? Also wondering if there s'a phone number for TAS or if it s'only online submission?

•@Sofia Perez Thank you so much for sharing this! I had no idea Form 911 even existed. Just to clarify - when you say it helped get your audit status updated, do you mean the online system started showing your audit info correctly, or did TAS just give you the status directly? I m'hoping this will fix the Audit "Status Unavailable error" I keep getting on the website.

•@Sofia Perez This is amazing advice! I ve'been dealing with the same Audit "Status Unavailable error" for weeks now. Quick question - when you filed Form 911, did you mention the specific website error message you were getting? I want to make sure I include all the relevant details when I submit mine. Also, did the TAS representative actually have access to systems that the regular IRS phone support doesn t?'Really hoping this works because I m'at my wit s'end here!

I'm dealing with something similar right now and it's incredibly frustrating! The IRS website has been giving me errors for weeks too. What I've learned from talking to a tax professional is that their online systems often lag behind their internal systems by 60-90 days, especially for audits. The "Audit Status Unavailable" error seems to be a known issue - I've seen complaints about it on multiple forums. Have you tried checking your account transcript instead of just the audit status page? Sometimes audit-related codes show up there first (like 420, 424, or 430 codes). Also, if you have the specific audit case number from your letter, you might have better luck calling the examination department directly rather than the main IRS line. The number should be on your audit letter.

•@Santiago Diaz This is really helpful info! I didn t'know about those specific codes 420, (424, 430 -) going to check my account transcript right now to see if any of those show up. You re'right about the examination department number being on the letter - I ve'been calling the main line like an idiot this whole time 🤦♀️ Do you know if the examination department has better hours or less wait time than the main IRS number? Also curious about the 60-90 day lag you mentioned - is that pretty standard across all IRS online services or just the audit status page?

I went through this exact same nightmare last year! The "Audit Status Unavailable" error plagued me for over 3 months. What finally helped was a combination of things: First, I kept detailed records of every error message and time I tried to access the system (screenshots help). Second, I found that the IRS2Go mobile app sometimes shows different info than the website - worth trying if you haven't already. Third, and this was key - I reached out to my local Taxpayer Advocate Service office directly (not just filing Form 911 online). They have physical offices in most major cities and the in-person help was way more effective than anything online or over the phone. The advocate assigned to my case had access to systems that regular IRS phone support doesn't, and she could see my audit status immediately even when the website was broken. It took about 10 days from my first TAS appointment to getting a complete status update and timeline for my audit. Hang in there - the system is definitely broken but there are ways around it!

•@Jamal Washington This is exactly what I needed to hear! I had no idea there were physical TAS offices - I thought it was all online/phone based. How did you find your local office? Is there a directory on the IRS website or did you have to call around? Also really smart idea about keeping screenshots of the error messages - I wish I had started doing that from day one. The IRS2Go app tip is interesting too, I ll'definitely try that. Did you need to bring any specific documents to your in-person TAS appointment, or just your audit letter and ID?

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Got my audit letter in November and the website still shows "Audit Status Unavailable" every single time I try to check. It's beyond frustrating especially when you can't get through on the phone either. I've been checking my account transcript religiously but don't see any of those audit codes people mentioned (420, 424, 430). The whole system seems completely broken. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences and solutions here - definitely going to try the TAS route and see if I can find a local office. Has anyone had success with the IRS2Go app showing different info than the website? Might be worth a shot while I'm waiting to hear back from other options.
