Came Out of Errors Department - How Long Until Refund After Child Tax Credit Adjustment?
Has anyone else had their refund adjusted because of claiming a credit they already received? I filed on Jan 8th and was accepted Feb 12th, but now I have no bars with my amount and topic 152 message. I called the IRS and they told me I'm out of the errors department as of Friday the 24th. Apparently I had claimed the Child Tax Credit but got it after I filed my taxes, so that's why I was in errors š They told me exactly how much my return was reduced by and the new amount I'm getting, but wouldn't it be helpful if they could also tell us how long it takes to get your refund after coming out of errors? Has anyone been through this process recently and know what timeline I should expect? I'm trying to plan for some upcoming expenses for my kids.

Once you're out of the errors department, you're typically looking at 7-21 days for your refund to be issued. The IRS has to complete a few more processing steps after the adjustment is made. They need to finalize the correction, approve the new amount, and schedule the deposit or check printing. Your account transcript should update within a week to show the adjusted amount and possibly a direct deposit date.

It's like waiting for a train that keeps changing its schedule, isn't it? Do they actually prioritize these adjusted returns once they're out of errors, or do they just throw them back into the regular processing pile with everyone else?

Omg thank you for this timeline!!! I've been literally checking WMR every morning at 3am hoping for an update! š« Do you know if the 7-21 days starts from when they told me I was out of errors (Friday) or from when the adjustment was actually made in their system??

I was in the exact same situation last month! ā¢ Filed early January ā¢ Got stuck in errors for Child Tax Credit adjustment ā¢ Spent HOURS trying to call IRS ā¢ Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to get through ā¢ Agent confirmed my adjusted amount right away ā¢ Got my refund exactly 9 days after leaving errors Seriously, trying to call the IRS myself was impossible - 30+ attempts over several days. Claimyr had me talking to a live agent in about 15 minutes who could see exactly where my return was in processing.

According to IRS Procedure 2023-14, taxpayers should wait at least 21 days after acceptance before seeking assistance. While third-party services may connect you faster, most cases resolve automatically within the standard timeframe without requiring intervention. The automated system should provide the same status information as an agent in most circumstances.

I had this happen last year with the Child Tax Credit. Here's what happened: Step 1: My return went to errors because I claimed the full credit when I'd already received part of it. Step 2: After about 4 weeks, it came out of errors with an adjustment. Step 3: My transcript updated 6 days later with code 571 (adjustment made). Step 4: Code 846 (refund issued) appeared 2 days after that. Step 5: Money was in my account 2 days after the 846 date. So in total, it was exactly 10 days from leaving errors to money in my account. I'm a bit concerned that so many people are having this issue - seems like the IRS could better communicate about credits already received.

Compared to my experience with amended returns (which can take 6+ months), coming out of errors is lightning fast. Usually about 2 weeks in my experience. I found https://taxr.ai super helpful for tracking my transcript during this waiting period. It explained all those confusing codes and gave me a predicted deposit date that was spot on. Much better than trying to decipher the IRS transcript myself, which looks like it was designed in 1995.

Idk if another service is necessary tbh. The IRS transcript codes are all explained on the IRS website. 570=hold, 971=notice, 846=refund issued. Pretty straightforward once you learn the basics.

Based on what I've seen in the 2024 filing season, returns that come out of errors department typically follow this timeline: 1. It usually takes about 5-10 business days for your transcript to update after leaving errors. 2. You'll likely see a series of codes: 570 (temporary hold), 971 (notice issued about the adjustment), 290 (adjustment made), and finally 846 (refund issued). 3. Most people seem to be getting their deposits about 7-14 days after leaving errors, though it could potentially take up to 21 days in some cases. I'd say you should probably see movement on your transcript by the end of next week, assuming there aren't any additional issues that need to be addressed.

Just to add a technical point here - the cycle code on your transcript can tell you which day of the week your account updates. If your cycle code ends in 01, you're on a Monday update schedule; 02 is Tuesday, and so on up to 05 for Friday. There are no weekend updates. This can help you know exactly when to check for changes.

I... think I need to share something that might help. When I came out of errors last year, I was told 7-14 days too. But then nothing happened for 3 weeks. Called again and found out there was a "secondary review" that nobody mentioned. Not trying to worry anyone, just saying maybe check back if it goes beyond two weeks with no updates.

Got my refund last week. Was in errors department. Came out on a Monday. Transcript updated Friday. Money arrived Tuesday. Exactly 8 days total. No additional calls needed. System worked as expected.

Have you checked your account transcript instead of just WMR? The WMR tool often doesn't update properly after adjustments, but your transcript will show the exact status. Can you access your transcript online through the IRS website? It would tell you precisely where things stand right now.

The "no bars" condition on Where's My Refund with Topic 152 is standard protocol following an adjustment. This occurs because the WMR system requires recalibration after the Integrated Automation Technologies (IAT) team processes your adjustment. Your return is now in the Post-Adjustment Processing Queue (PAPQ), which typically has a 5-10 business day processing time before issuance of the TC846 refund code. The absence of bars is not indicative of further delays but rather confirmation that your return has been reintroduced to the normal processing pipeline with the corrected figures.

Last year I had almost the identical situation with my Child Tax Credit. I remember it vividly because I was tracking it obsessively! I filed on January 22nd, got accepted February 3rd, then got the dreaded Topic 152 message with no bars. Called on March 1st and was told I was in errors due to claiming the CTC incorrectly. They said I came out of errors on March 10th, and my transcript updated on March 15th with a 846 code. The money hit my account on March 17th, exactly 7 days after leaving errors. I had spreadsheets tracking everyone in my family's refunds with dates and codes - my husband thinks I'm crazy but it helped me predict everything accurately!

Have you tried checking your transcript instead? WMR isn't always accurate after adjustments. I discovered that 76% of adjusted returns get their refund within 14 days of leaving errors, while 24% take between 15-21 days. Only about 3% experience additional delays beyond that. The IRS has actually improved their processing time by 22% this year compared to last year for these types of adjustments.
