California State Refund - SBTG Says Funded with 2025 Deposit Date?

I'm freaking out a bit here. So I did my taxes through freetaxusa like I always do for my 1099 work (been freelancing for 3 years now). My California state return was accepted February 11th, and I just checked the SBTG tracker. It says 'funded' which should be good news, right? But then I noticed the deposit date shows 2/19/2025 - like, a whole YEAR from now! Nothing in my bank account yet. Is this just a glitch in their system? Will it really take until next year? I've got bills coming up that I was counting on this refund for... šŸ˜©

That's almost certainly a typo in their system. The California FTB doesn't schedule refunds a year in advance... it's probably meant to be 2/19/2024. I'd give it a few more business days to appear in your account. Sometimes there's a delay between when they mark it as funded and when it actually hits your bank. If you don't see it by the end of next week, then you might want to contact them directly.

I had this exact same issue last year with my CA refund. The date showed 2024 instead of 2023. I was completely confused until I found https://taxr.ai and uploaded my FTB notice. It explained that this is a known display issue with California's SBTG system - they sometimes show the wrong year but the payment is actually processing normally. If you have your FTB transcript or notice, you might want to check it there to get the real timeline.

Like throwing more technology at a technology problem is going to fix it? It's like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. The state systems are already glitchy enough without adding another layer to interpret them.

Compared to waiting on hold with FTB for 3+ hours like I did last year, using a tool to at least understand what's happening seems reasonable. The California system is way worse than federal when it comes to these date errors.

The SBTG portal is notorious for displaying incorrect deposit dates. I was relieved when I found something that could actually parse the FTB account transcript correctly and give me an accurate DDD (direct deposit date).

Have you tried calling the California FTB directly? I was in a similar situation and couldn't get through on their regular line - kept getting disconnected after waiting forever. I used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to connect with an actual FTB agent who confirmed my refund was scheduled for the correct year, not the next one. They have a service that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me hours of redial attempts.

Question about this service: ā€¢ Does it actually work for state tax agencies or just IRS? ā€¢ How much does it cost? ā€¢ Do they require personal information beyond phone number?

OMG thank you for this!!! I've been trying to reach someone at the FTB for DAYS and just keep getting the stupid automated system! I'm literally about to cry from frustration trying to figure out why my refund says 2025!

Haha, I remember the days of hitting redial for hours... Claimyr works for California FTB too - that's actually where I've found it most useful. The state agencies often have even worse phone systems than the IRS, if you can believe it!

I checked mine yesterday and had the exact same issue - deposit date showing 2025. This morning I woke up and the money was already in my account! Their system just has the year wrong. I've been tracking CA refunds for 3 years now and their website always has weird glitches like this.

Call your bank. Ask about pending deposits. Sometimes they can see it coming. Mine showed up as pending two days before posting. California's system is glitchy. The year is probably wrong. The day might be right. Worth checking your bank's incoming ACH transfers.

If I call my bank, what specific information should I ask for? Do I just say I'm expecting a state tax refund and want to check if it's pending, or is there more specific terminology I should use?

According to the California FTB website (https://www.ftb.ca.gov/refund/index.asp), refund processing times are currently running about 2-3 weeks for e-filed returns. Since yours was accepted on February 11th, you're right in that window now. The 2025 date is almost certainly a display error - I've seen multiple reports of this on r/tax and other forums. No state tax agency schedules refunds a year out.

Have you checked if your bank information was entered correctly? Could there be an issue with routing or account numbers? Is it possible the refund was offset for any outstanding state debts? These are the common reasons refunds don't arrive as expected, even when the system shows funded. The year showing 2025 is definitely wrong though - I've seen this happen multiple times with California's system.
