California Refund Deposited January 25th But IRS Federal Return Still Processing After a Month
Filed both federal and state returns on the same day last month and already got my California refund direct deposited yesterday! According to the FTB website (webapp.ftb.ca.gov), my California refund was authorized on Saturday, January 26, 2025. The status shows "Issued" with all three status indicators (Received, Processing, Issued) completed. The FTB message specifically states: "We authorized your refund on Saturday, January 26, 2025. Please allow: 10 business days to receive your refund by direct deposit, or 25 business days to receive your refund by check. If we made any adjustments to your return, we will notify you by mail." But meanwhile, I'm hearing absolutely nothing from the IRS about my federal return. I filed both returns on the exact same day, yet California has already processed, approved, and initiated the direct deposit for my state refund. Anyone else seeing state refunds moving way faster than federal this year? Is this typical, or is the IRS particularly slow this season?

Tax pro here - this is actually pretty common. State systems are generally less complex and have fewer returns to process. California's FTB has really stepped up their game with processing speed in recent years.
