As of date 2/26/24 on account transcript - what does this mean?
I have an as of date os 2/26/24 on my account transcript. What does this mean? Thx in advance. I'm new to US tax system & want to make sure I'm understanding everything correctly. Is this a good or bad thing for my refund? Need to know ASAP bc I'm planning my budget.

The 'as of' date on your transcript is basically, in most cases, just the date the IRS computer system last updated or processed something on your account. It doesn't necessarily mean anything happened on that specific date, and it might not really impact your refund timeline. Sometimes the date changes but nothing actually happens with your return processing. I've seen mine change multiple times during processing without any real meaning.

Is there any way to determine if the 'as of' date actually indicates processing activity? Or is it completely unreliable as an indicator of progress?

Thanks for explaining this! I've been watching my transcript since February 15th and my 'as of' date changed three times already. Good to know it's not something to worry about.

Will it change again? Mine hasn't moved in weeks.

OMG THANK YOU!! I've been stressing so much about this stupid date! Been checking every single day and driving myself crazy. This makes so much more sense now!

Did you check your transcript for cycle codes? Those tell you more than the as of date. Look for codes 150, 570, 571, or 846. The 846 code shows your refund date.

I found the IRS.gov page that explains these codes and it's super helpful. My transcript had code 570 (hold) but then got 571 (release) a week later. The refund showed up 3 days after that.

Can you still get a refund if you have a 570 without a 571? I'm freaking out cuz I need this $ for rent next month!!

I had a similar situation last year where my as of date was stuck for about 3 weeks. Eventually it updated with a new date and my refund was processed the following week. The waiting is definitely the hardest part compared to the tax systems in my home country.

The 'as of' date is somewhat misleading in how it works. It's not exactly when your return was last processed, but more of an internal system date the IRS uses. Sometimes it will move forward, sometimes backward, and sometimes it stays the same even when other transcript information changes. I would suggest looking at the transaction codes instead of focusing on this date.

This is so true. Last year my as of date jumped backward by two weeks right before my refund was issued. Made no sense but got my money anyway!

Thank you for clarifying this! The IRS systems are so confusing compared to what I'm used to.

Appreciate this explanation! Been staring at my transcript trying to decode it like it's some kind of ancient hieroglyphics.

I had the exact same question last month. After trying to call the IRS for three days straight (and never getting through), I used Claimyr to connect with an agent. Here's what I did: 1. Went to Claimyr.com 2. Got connected to an IRS agent in about 15 minutes 3. The agent explained that the 'as of' date is just a computer processing date 4. They confirmed my return was still being processed normally Saved me so much stress! The agent could see exactly what was happening with my return, which the website couldn't tell me.

Did you really need to pay for a service just to talk to the IRS? Seems like something that should be free...

How much did it cost to use Claimyr? Was it worth it compared to just waiting?

I used Claimyr too after spending literally 6 hours on hold over 2 days. Got through in 20 minutes and found out my return was just waiting for a simple verification. Would have been waiting for months otherwise!

I'm not convinced the 'as of' date means anything significant. Consider these points: ā¢ It often changes without any actual progress on your return ā¢ Many people get refunds without any change to this date ā¢ The date sometimes moves backward, which makes no logical sense ā¢ IRS systems are notoriously outdated I wouldn't make any financial plans based on this date alone.

The 'as of' date is actually part of the IRS's weekly processing cycle. They run major updates on Wednesday nights into Thursday mornings, which is why many people see transcript updates on Thursdays and Fridays.

Mine changed 4 times during processing last year and my refund still came on time. This year it hasn't changed once and I'm still waiting. There's definitely no consistent pattern.

My experience matches yours completely. My as of date went from 2/12 to 3/11 to 2/26 and back to 3/11 again. Got my refund without any rhyme or reason to those date changes.

I remember being confused by this too! The 'as of' date is basically just when the IRS computer system last processed something on your account. Last year mine changed about 5 times before I got my refund. One week it even went backward by three weeks which made no sense! But then my refund showed up right after that. It's more of an internal system marker than anything meaningful to us taxpayers.

Same thing happened to me! My date jumped backward from March to February, and I panicked thinking they were starting over with my return. Got my direct deposit two days later. The IRS works in mysterious ways.

The 'as of' date is actually tied to the IRS's weekly processing cycle. They do major updates on Wednesday nights, which is why many people see transcript changes on Thursdays and Fridays.

According to Internal Revenue Manual 21.2.3.4.2.1, the 'as of' date on your account transcript represents the date through which any account balance (including penalties and interest) is calculated. Per IRM 21.2.3-1, this date is significant primarily for accounts with balances due, not necessarily for refund processing. For refund status, focus instead on Transaction Code 846 which indicates a refund has been scheduled.
