Anyone have an update from North Carolina state tax refund?

I e-filed my federal and North Carolina state taxes exactly 47 days ago (February 15th, 2024). My federal refund of $1,243.78 arrived on March 2nd, but I'm still waiting on my NC state refund of $637.52. The NC Department of Revenue website shows my return as "being processed" for the past 6 weeks. Has anyone else from North Carolina received their state refund recently? I'm concerned there might be a calculation error since I'm including retirement income for the first time this year. The website says processing can take up to 8 weeks, but I'm getting worried since I've always received it within 3-4 weeks in previous years.

Last year I waited 52 days for my NC refund even though my federal came within 2 weeks. The year before that was only 21 days for NC. Their systems seem to be more backed up this year based on what I'm seeing in the processing forums. When I checked the NC DOR website this morning, they're showing an estimated processing time of 6-8 weeks for e-filed returns with direct deposit. Paper returns are taking 12+ weeks according to their notice. Have you checked if your withholding calculations were correct? Sometimes retirement income withholding can trigger additional verification.

Oh my goodness, 52 days?! I'm getting so anxious waiting! Did you ever find out why yours took so long last year? I'm wondering if I should be concerned or just keep waiting.

The processing time variance between federal and state returns is quite typical. In my experience as a tax preparer, the IRS has significantly more resources for return processing than state departments of revenue. NC specifically has been experiencing elongated processing times since the implementation of their updated tax system in 2022. Retirement income often triggers additional verification protocols due to the potential for calculation errors in withholding.

Just got my NC refund yesterday after waiting 7 weeks and 3 days! The NCDOR website (https://www.ncdor.gov/refund-status) was showing "processing" right up until the deposit hit my account. According to their latest update from March 29th, they're experiencing higher than normal volume this year. You need to act quickly if you want to see your money before May! The state fiscal year ends June 30th and they tend to slow down even more as they approach that deadline.

Thanks for sharing this timeline. I'm always skeptical of the "higher than normal volume" excuse they use every year. Seems convenient that they're always experiencing "unprecedented" volumes. Did you notice if they paid any interest on your delayed refund?

The NC Department of Revenue typically doesn't pay interest on refunds unless they exceed 45 days from the filing deadline (April 15) or from the date of filing, whichever is later. So even with a 7-week wait, they're technically still within their allowable processing window. However, I would recommend keeping documentation of all filing dates and communications in case there are further delays.

Is there possibly a way to check if there's an issue with your return? I'm wondering if maybe there's something holding it up that you could address now rather than waiting longer. Could retirement income trigger some kind of review process?

I'm in the same boat. Filed February 12th. Got federal March 1st. Still waiting on NC. Called them yesterday. They said it's normal. No issues flagged. Just backlogged. Told me to wait another 2 weeks. Frustrating. My refund is $412.

You're actually right on track with normal processing times. NC is currently averaging 43.7 days for e-filed returns with direct deposit according to the latest data. Returns with retirement income take an average of 7.2 days longer due to additional verification steps. If you filed on February 12th and today is April 3rd, you're at exactly 51 days, which is within their current processing window of 45-60 days for returns with additional income sources.

I was in the same situation last week - waiting on NC for like forever while my federal came weeks ago. I finally got tired of calling that impossible NC tax number (busy signal every single time, lol). Used Claimyr to get through (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c) and actually spoke to a human being! Worth every penny because they confirmed my return was just in the queue and not flagged for any issues. Got my refund 3 days later, probably just coincidence but at least I stopped stressing about it. Who knew state taxes would be more complicated than federal? 🤦‍♂️

• I've heard of Claimyr but never tried it myself • How much did the service cost you? • Did they require any personal information? • Was the agent you reached actually helpful? • I wonder if calling really expedites anything or just provides peace of mind I'm skeptical that phone calls actually move returns faster in the queue, but the confirmation that nothing is wrong might be worth it.

Did you call the specific NC Department of Revenue refund hotline at 877-252-4052? I've found that calling at 8:15 AM on Tuesdays and Thursdays (January 12, February 3, and March 22) resulted in shorter wait times compared to other days. Did the representative provide any specific information about why your return was delayed or just general assurance?

Be careful abt NC tax processing this yr. My mom filed in early Feb and got a letter 6 wks later saying they needed more docs for her retirement income. Turns out they wanted proof of her 1099-R withholding! So frustrating bc that info was already on the forms she submitted. By the time she sent everything in and they processed it, she'd waited 9+ wks for her $780 refund. Might wanna check if they sent you anything in the mail. Sometimes these notices don't show up online.

Did your mom have to send in physical copies of her documents or was she able to upload them electronically? I'm wondering what to prepare just in case.

Thank you for sharing this! I'll definitely check my mail more carefully. I sometimes ignore official-looking envelopes thinking they're just advertisements.

The NC Department of Revenue has been implementing a new processing system this tax season that's causing some delays, especially for returns with retirement income. Have you verified that your address is correct on your return? Would you consider calling them directly to check on the status? Did you receive any confirmation emails when you filed? I've noticed that returns with retirement income sometimes get flagged for additional verification, especially if this is the first year reporting that type of income.

I did double-check my address and it's correct. I also have the confirmation email from when I e-filed. Do you think it's worth calling them now or should I wait the full 8 weeks before reaching out?

Here's what I've learned from dealing with NC state refunds for the past several years: 1. Be patient. NC typically takes 6-8 weeks, sometimes longer. 2. Check your status online weekly, not daily. The system updates in batches. 3. If you're approaching 8 weeks, call first thing in the morning (8:00 AM). 4. Have your filing date, SSN, and expected refund amount ready. 5. Ask specifically if there are any holds or verification needs. 6. Request an estimated completion date if possible. Most importantly, don't panic if you're still within their published timeframe. Retirement income does sometimes trigger additional review, but that's normal and doesn't mean there's a problem with your return.

This is really helpful! Do you know if calling them actually speeds up the process or just gives peace of mind? I'm debating whether it's worth taking time off work to make the call.

Is there a specific phone number that works better than others? I've tried calling a couple of times but couldn't get through.

I got my NC refund yesterday. Filed January 29. Waited exactly 9 weeks. The online status never updated until the money appeared in my account. They're definitely slower this year than previous years. Don't expect the same timeline as federal.

I'm in a very similar situation - filed on February 10th and still waiting on my NC refund while my federal came through weeks ago. This is also my first year reporting retirement income (401k rollover), so I'm wondering if that's what's causing the delay. Reading through everyone's experiences here is actually reassuring that I'm not alone in this wait! It sounds like 7-9 weeks is becoming the new normal for NC, especially with retirement income involved. I'm going to wait until I hit the 8-week mark before calling, but it's good to know that others have eventually received their refunds even after long waits. Thanks for sharing your timeline - it helps to know what to expect!

I'm in exactly the same boat! Filed February 8th with my first year of retirement income (pension distributions) and still waiting on NC while federal came through in early March. It's somewhat comforting to know this delay seems pretty standard for retirement income situations. I've been checking the status obsessively but I think I'm going to follow the advice here and just check weekly instead of daily. The 8-week rule seems like a good benchmark before calling. Hang in there - sounds like we're both right on track for the "new normal" timeline!

I'm experiencing almost the exact same timeline! Filed on February 16th and received my federal refund ($892) on March 4th, but still waiting on my NC state refund of $534. This is also my first year including retirement income (IRA distribution), so I'm wondering if that's triggering additional review. The "being processed" status on the NC website hasn't changed in 6 weeks either. Based on everyone's experiences here, it sounds like 7-9 weeks is becoming standard for returns with retirement income. I'm at 46 days now, so hopefully I'll see movement in the next 2-3 weeks. It's reassuring to know this delay pattern is common this year and not necessarily indicative of an error. Thanks for posting this - sometimes it helps just knowing you're not alone in the wait!

I'm glad I found this thread too! I filed on February 20th and am in almost identical circumstances - federal refund came through quickly but still waiting on NC with retirement income (403b withdrawal) for the first time. It's day 43 for me and seeing everyone's timelines here is really reassuring. The consistency of 7-9 weeks for retirement income seems to be the pattern this year. I was starting to worry something was wrong, but it sounds like we just need to be patient. Going to stop checking daily and follow the advice to wait until 8 weeks before calling. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

I'm going through the exact same situation! Filed my NC return on February 14th (federal and state together) and received my federal refund of $1,156 on March 3rd, but still waiting on my NC refund of $423. This is also my first year reporting retirement income from a 401k distribution, so I'm wondering if that's what's causing the extended processing time. The NC website has shown "being processed" for over 6 weeks now with no change. Reading through everyone's experiences here is actually really helpful - it sounds like 7-9 weeks has become the new standard for returns with retirement income this year. I'm at day 48 now, so hopefully I'll see some movement soon. It's frustrating that NC takes so much longer than federal, especially when you're used to getting both refunds around the same time in previous years. But at least now I know this delay pattern is common and not necessarily a sign that something's wrong with my return. Thanks for starting this thread - it's reassuring to know so many of us are in the same boat!

I'm so relieved to find this discussion! I filed on February 18th with my first-ever retirement income (Roth IRA conversion) and I'm at day 45 waiting for my NC refund while my federal came through weeks ago. The pattern everyone is describing - 7-9 weeks for retirement income returns - seems to be exactly what I'm experiencing too. It's actually kind of reassuring to see that the NC website staying stuck on "being processed" for 6+ weeks is normal this year. I was getting really anxious thinking I'd made some kind of error, but it sounds like we all just need to hang tight a bit longer. Thanks for sharing your timeline - knowing others are going through the exact same thing with similar amounts and dates really helps with the anxiety!
