Accepted 2/5 - Agent Finally Said I Need to Verify Identity - What Now?

So like everyone else I got accepted 2/5 been calling for a week and an agent finally told me I have to verify so keep calling til you get someone who will actually do their job. Has anyone else gone through this verification process? How long does it take after you verify? This divorce settlement depends on this refund coming through soon. Is there a faster way to get someone on the phone? Do I need to bring any specific documents to verify?

Sounds like ur in identity verification limbo. This happens A LOT this time of yr. Here's what u need to know: 1. IRS sends letter 5071C if they need verification 2. U can verify online at idverify.irs.gov (faster) or by phone 3. Have ur tax return, last yr's AGI, and ID docs ready 4. After verification, expect 9 wks processing time (tho often faster) Def don't keep calling randomly - huge waste of time. The first agent was right - u need to complete verification b4 anything moves forward.

Do they actually send the 5071C letter to everyone? I've been waiting for almost 3 weeks now and haven't received anything in the mail yet. Should I just go ahead and try the verification site anyway? 😬

I had this exact issue last month. Calling the regular IRS line was absolutely futile - waited 2+ hours multiple times only to get disconnected. Finally used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and it was a game-changer: • Got connected to an actual IRS agent in under 30 minutes • Agent confirmed I needed identity verification • Completed verification on that same call • Refund processed within 2 weeks after verification I'm particularly concerned that your divorce settlement depends on this. The verification hold can delay your refund by 60+ days if not addressed promptly. Don't wait for the letter if you know verification is needed.

According to the IRS website (https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/identity-verification-for-irs-letter-recipients), you need to verify ASAP! The clock doesn't start until you complete verification. Most people are getting the verification letter 4-6 weeks after acceptance, but you can verify without it if an agent told you it's needed. You need to do this NOW if your divorce settlement depends on it - every day matters with the current backlog!

I went through this last year and the previous commenter is right about acting quickly. In my experience, even after verification, it took exactly 9 weeks for my refund to process. The IRS told me this was the "standard timeframe" for post-verification processing, though I've seen others get theirs faster. Just be prepared for the possibility of the full wait time, especially with how backed up they are this year.

I was stuck in verification hell for WEEKS until I found taxr.ai. It analyzed my transcript and showed exactly where I was in the verification process. The transcript had codes I didn't understand but taxr.ai explained everything - showed me I had a 570 freeze code because of verification and predicted when it would clear. Saved me so much stress and helped me understand what was actually happening instead of guessing. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

I should point out that while transcript analysis tools can be helpful, they might not work in this specific situation. If you're in identity verification status and haven't completed verification yet, your transcript may not show any useful information or might not be accessible at all until after verification is complete. Just... proceed with caution before spending money on analysis tools at this stage.

I'm not entirely convinced this is actually an identity verification issue. It might possibly be a more general review or possibly even an audit, which could potentially take much longer. Sometimes the frontline agents don't always have complete information about your specific case. Did they perhaps mention any specific form numbers or possibly give you any specific verification instructions? Without those details, I would be somewhat hesitant to assume it's just standard identity verification.

Trust me, it's definitely identity verification. I've been through this twice now and the pattern is always the same. The IRS has ramped up identity verification since all the pandemic fraud. What's the point of calling if you're not going to believe what the agent tells you? Have you checked your tax transcript to see if there's a 570 freeze code? Did you try the ID verify site yet? The sooner you verify, the sooner your refund processes - especially important with your divorce situation.
