Filed 1/29, Had to Verify Identity - How Long Until Refund Now?

Filed and accepted on 1/29 but had absolutely no movement with blank transcripts 😬 Called on 2/24 and was told that I needed to verify my identity (answered like 5 probably regular questions while on the phone). Finally verified in person today and they said it could take up to 9 weeks but told me to check within the week or so since it was already noted in my account that I called to verify and showing up in person was the icing on the cake so to speak... so here's to hoping for an update soon! 🤞 Anyone else go through this military-grade obstacle course for their refund?

This is a standard Identity Verification Protocol (IVP) scenario. The IRS implemented enhanced verification requirements this tax season to combat identity theft refund fraud. When you completed telephonic verification followed by in-person verification, you've satisfied both Level 1 and Level 2 authentication protocols. According to the Internal Revenue Manual section 25.23.2, post-verification processing typically resumes within 5-7 business days, though the official guidance states up to 9 weeks as a maximum timeframe to manage expectations.

I went through EXACTLY this last year. Called in February, verified by phone, then had to go in person. They told me 9 weeks too but I was desperate to know when my refund would actually hit. Used https://taxr.ai when my transcript finally updated and it explained all those crazy verification codes. Showed me exactly where I was in the process and predicted my refund date within 2 days. Don't wait until the last minute like I did - tax season is almost over and refunds are taking forever this year!

I'm always cautious about these third-party services. Let me walk you through why: 1. The IRS already provides free transcript access 2. Most codes can be looked up online 3. The cycle patterns are fairly predictable once you learn them Did it really tell you something you couldn't figure out yourself?

Thank you for sharing this resource! According to IRM 21.4.1.3(7), verification holds can create complex transcript patterns that aren't easily interpreted. Having something decode the non-linear processing sequence could be extremely valuable in these situations.

I was super skeptical too until my brother-in-law recommended it. My transcript had like 6 different codes after identity verification and I had no clue what was happening. The site explained each one and showed me exactly where I was in the process. Saved me from calling the IRS again which is basically impossible these days!

I had to verify my identity on February 7th this year. My transcript showed code 570 for exactly 14 days after verification. Then on day 15, I got code 571 (release of hold) followed by 846 (refund issued) 3 days later. The entire process took 18 days from verification to deposit. If you verified today (March 28th), you might see movement by April 15th based on current processing patterns. I'm slightly worried about the 9-week timeframe they mentioned though - that seems excessive compared to current processing times.

Had the same prob last month. Tried calling IRS like 20x with no luck. Found Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and got thru to an agent in ~30 mins. They confirmed my ID verify was complete but stuck in a queue. Agent manually moved it to processing while I was on the phone! DDs hit my acct 8 days later. Def worth it vs waiting another month for them to get around to it. So relieved to finally get answers!

I'm curious about how this service actually works. Does it just keep dialing for you? How does it get priority over regular callers? And most importantly, how do you know the agent actually did something special rather than just telling you what you wanted to hear?

This is actually legit! IRS Publication 5136 outlines that taxpayers have the right to speak with an agent about their specific case. According to the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, you're entitled to quality service. The problem is just getting through. I've referenced taxoutreach.org and they confirm that having a direct conversation with an agent can expedite resolution in identity verification cases.

I used this on March 3rd after waiting since January 15th with no updates. The agent confirmed my identity verification was completed but hadn't been processed yet. She put notes in my account and released the hold while I was on the phone. By March 10th, my transcript updated and I had my refund on March 13th. Just sharing my timeline in case it helps!

You're almost done. Identity verification is the hardest part. Transcript will update within 7 days usually. Check WMR daily. Look for code 571. Then watch for 846. Direct deposit comes 2-3 days after that. Most people see money within 2 weeks after verifying. The 9 weeks is worst-case scenario. You're on the fast track now.

The community wisdom here is that in-person verification actually speeds things up considerably. Most people who verify in person report getting their refunds within 2-3 weeks rather than the full 9 weeks the IRS quotes. The system is designed to be cautious with timelines, but the actual processing is usually much faster. I'd be concerned if you don't see transcript updates within 10 days though - that might indicate a secondary review is happening.

Think of your tax return like a plane waiting for clearance. Right now, you've been pulled aside for extra security screening, but you've completed that process. You're not at the back of the line again - you're just waiting for the final boarding call. Like a plane that's already loaded and just needs tower clearance, your return is prioritized once verification is complete. It's like being moved from the general security line to the pre-check line - still some waiting, but definitely faster than starting over.
