I think I may have had a similar situation to yours. I verified my identity on April 10th, and my transcript updated exactly 6 business days later. First I saw code 971 appear (notice issued), then the next day I got code 846 with a direct deposit date. My verification was specifically for the tax advocate PIN issue though, so your timeline might be slightly different if your verification was for something else.
I had almost the exact same experience last year, but it took 8 business days instead of 6. I think they're processing a bit faster this year compared to last year's backlog.
When you say "tax advocate PIN issue" - was that related to an Identity Protection PIN or something different? I'm trying to understand if different verification reasons have different timelines.
Before spending money on services or wasting hours on hold, try these steps: 1. Pull your transcript from irs.gov/transcripts (account transcript, not return transcript) 2. Look for specific codes - 570 means hold, 971 means notice issued 3. Check if any letters were sent to your address of record 4. If no codes indicate issues, call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040 5. Call exactly at 7am Eastern time when they open 6. If that fails after 3-4 attempts, then consider paid options I'm generally skeptical of paying for something you can do yourself, but sometimes the time saved is worth it if you've tried the free options first.
I just got my refund yesterday after filing February 18th. No explanation for the delay, no special codes on my transcript, it just randomly processed after sitting for 7 weeks. Did you claim any credits? Have any marketplace insurance? File a schedule C? These can all trigger additional review. But honestly, sometimes it's just random which returns get stuck in their system. Don't they know people actually need their money?
I'm... hesitant to recommend this because I generally avoid paying for things I should be able to get for free, but after three weeks of trying to reach someone at the IRS about my similar situation, I finally tried Claimyr (https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c). They got me connected to an actual IRS agent who could help with my offset issue. I probably could have eventually gotten through myself, but I was losing more money in missed work hours trying to stay on hold than the service cost. The agent explained exactly what forms I needed and where to send them. Such a relief after weeks of frustration.
Have you verified your current status in the Automated Levy Protection program? Sometimes there are specific conditions that can trigger automatic removal: β’ Missing an installment payment by more than 15 days β’ Failing to file a required return on time β’ Defaulting on another tax obligation β’ Exceeding income thresholds during verification periods Did any of these happen in the past 12 months? This could explain why the protection failed despite you thinking you were still enrolled.
Have you tried using the IRS2Go app instead of the website? Sometimes it updates faster than the WMR portal. Also, check out the r/IRS megathread on refund timing - they have a daily thread where people post their filing software, date, and when they received refunds. From what I've seen there, Credit Karma/Cash App filers are averaging about 21 days right now. The IRS refund calendar at https://www.irs.gov/refunds is also helpful for understanding the general processing schedule.
I've used both Credit Karma and TurboTax in consecutive years, and there's definitely a difference in the Acknowledgment Code (ACK) processing time. The Path Act also affects EITC and ACTC claims, creating a mandatory hold until mid-February regardless of filing date. If you've claimed either of these credits, the 21-day processing window wouldn't have started until February 15th at the earliest, even if you filed in January. The IRS's Modernized e-File (MeF) system batches returns, so timing can vary significantly based on which batch your return was assigned to.

After experiencing cycle code 20240805, transcript code 570, and WMR status "still processing" for 38 days, I finally decided to contact the IRS directly. Used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) to bypass the hold time and got connected to an agent in about 15 minutes! Such a relief to finally speak with someone who confirmed my return was just in normal processing with no issues. They said to expect my DDD within 7-10 days, and sure enough, my transcript updated the next day!

Check the IRS2Go app right now! They just did a major update at 3am EST according to the r/IRS megathread. Many people with filing dates between 2/10-2/20 are seeing movement today. The tool updates overnight so what you saw this morning might already be outdated. www.irs.gov/refunds shows exactly when the next big update is scheduled.

β’β’ Did you file with any tax credits? (EIC, CTC, etc.) β’ Is your address the same as last year? β’ Have you checked your transcript for cycle codes? β’ What does the top of your transcript show for 2023 Return? Just trying to understand your specific situation better.
