21 Day Mark Tomorrow - WMR Stuck on 1 Bar, Transcript Shows N/A
My 21 days is tomorrow. Filed March 21st. WMR still shows 1 bar. No transcripts available. Transcript status kept changing. First N/A. Then a star. Now back to N/A for 4 days straight. Getting worried. Need this refund for bills.

This is super common rn during peak filing szn. The WMR tool and transcript system don't always sync up. N/A to star back to N/A typically means ur return is being processed but hasn't hit the final transcript db yet. The 21-day timeline is just a guideline - about 90% of returns are done by then, but many take 30+ days esp w/ the IRS backlog this yr. Have u checked if there's a topic 152 msg on WMR?

I've witnessed this pattern repeatedly in my 15 years as a tax professional. The transcript oscillation between N/A and the star symbol is documented in Internal Revenue Manual 21.4.1.3(7) as a normal processing indicator. Last year, approximately 22% of my clients experienced this exact pattern, and all received their refunds within 28-35 days of filing without requiring intervention.

Is it normal for it to flip back and forth like that though? I've been checking mine twice a day and it's been steady at one bar with no changes at all. Makes me wonder if something's wrong with my return compared to OP's...

I think you're in cycle 20240413. Based on what I've seen in previous years, your transcript will likely update this Thursday night/Friday morning. When I had this exact situation last April, my WMR didn't update until after my transcript showed the refund date. Have you checked your account transcript instead of just the return transcript? Sometimes that updates first with a 570 code, which would at least confirm they're working on it.

I was probably in the same boat as you about a month ago. My transcript kept switching between N/A and the star thing for like a week. I was kinda freaking out because I really needed that money for some car repairs. I finally tried using https://taxr.ai to analyze what was happening. It basically explained that the transcript switching back and forth usually means your return is moving between processing stages, and it's actually a good sign that things are moving. It gave me a pretty accurate prediction of when my refund would hit based on my cycle code once my transcript finally appeared.

But how would that service know anything more than we can see ourselves? Doesn't it just look at the same information we can access through the IRS website? I'm hesitant to use third-party services for something this sensitive.

Did you have to enter your personal information into the site? How much does it cost to use?

Would it still be helpful if your transcript is showing N/A? Or do you need to wait until there's actually something for it to analyze?

It doesn't need personal info. Just transcript codes. Helped me understand my delay. Worth checking out.

Your return is likely in the Error Resolution System (ERS) queue or Identity Verification process. The transcript status oscillation between N/A and the asterisk symbol indicates database synchronization during batch processing cycles. According to current IRS processing metrics, returns filed in late March are experiencing 24-30 day processing times due to heightened fraud prevention protocols implemented for TY2023. I recommend checking your Account transcript (not Return transcript) for TC 570/971 combination codes which would indicate specific processing holds.

We need to check immediately! March 21st filers are being processed right now. If there's no update by April 15th, something's definitely wrong with the return.

This reminds me of how my car's check engine light works - sometimes it flickers before staying on permanently. My transcript did the same thing last year - kept switching between N/A and showing info. Eventually it settled and my refund came about 5 days after that.

This is nothing like what happened with the stimulus payments though. Those were much more straightforward in processing. Tax returns have way more variables that can trigger reviews.

I've tracked exactly 47 cases like this in the past 2 tax seasons. In 41 of them (87.2%), the refund was issued between days 24-31 after filing. The remaining 6 cases had verification holds that resolved within 45-60 days. I completely understand your anxiety though - watching those transcript statuses change is emotionally draining when you're counting on that money.

I filed on March 20th and was stuck exactly like you until April 3rd. Called the IRS on April 1st after trying for 3 days straight and getting nowhere. Finally used Claimyr on April 2nd (https://claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 22 minutes. They confirmed my return was just in normal processing with no issues flagged. Transcript updated the very next day on April 3rd, and refund hit my account on April 7th. If you don't see movement by this Friday (April 12th), I'd definitely call to check.

I'm going through the EXACT same thing right now!!! Filed March 18th and still stuck on one bar. My transcript has been N/A the whole time though, no switching back and forth. I'm so nervous because I really need this money for my car payment due next week. 😫 This waiting game is killing me! I check WMR like 5 times a day hoping for a change.

I would be careful about checking too frequently. I think I may have accidentally triggered a verification by checking my transcript too many times in one day. My refund was delayed an extra month last year. Not saying that's definitely what happened, but it seemed suspicious that right after I checked multiple times, I got a letter asking to verify my identity. Maybe just check once a day to be safe.

Additional info that might help you: • The 21-day guideline is just that - a guideline • Transcript status changes are normal during processing • The "star" symbol means your return is being actively worked • N/A doesn't mean rejected, just not finalized • Returns filed in late March typically have 24-30 day processing times this year • Check your Account transcript, not just Return transcript • Most returns with this pattern resolve without any action needed

The transcript behavior you're describing is specifically related to the IRS Master File processing system. When your return moves between different processing stages, the transcript availability temporarily changes. The N/A status for 4 consecutive days may indicate your return has moved to the final verification stage before refund approval. This is typically a positive sign that processing is nearing completion rather than an indication of problems.

I remember my first time dealing with this last year - drove me absolutely crazy! I was checking WMR hourly and watching my transcript like it was a suspense movie. What I learned after three tax seasons of this: the IRS systems are incredibly old and don't talk to each other well. My transcript did the exact same dance - N/A, then star, then back to N/A for almost a week. Then suddenly everything appeared at once and my refund hit 3 days later. The waiting is the hardest part, but this pattern is actually pretty normal.
