IRS Requesting Call for 2023 Amended Return (Filed June 19) - "Take Action" Message with Extension 623

Just checked Where's My Amended Return tool for my 2023 amended return and got a "Take Action" message. It shows my amended return was received on June 19, 2024, but hasn't been processed yet. The message specifically says "Your amended return was received on June 19, 2024. However, it has not been processed. We apologize for any inconvenience." I took a screenshot of the actual message from the Where's My Amended Return tool, and it shows: "Take Action Please see below for additional info about your amended return. Your amended return was received on June 19, 2024. However, it has not been processed. We apologize for any inconvenience. Please call 800-829-0582, extension 623, between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. You will need a copy of your amended return." It's telling me to call 800-829-0582, extension 623, between 7am and 7pm Monday through Friday, and says I need to have a copy of my amended return ready. Has anyone experienced this or know what this message means? Pretty concerned about why they need me to call instead of just processing it. I was checking from my phone - you can see it was at 11:44 with 5G signal when I took the screenshot. The year 2023 is shown clearly in the tool, so it's definitely looking at the right tax year for my amended return. I'm worried because I expected it to just process normally, but now they want me to call with my documents ready. Does this mean there's a problem with my amended return? Has the IRS found an issue they need to discuss with me?

The IRS "Where's My Amended Return" tool is showing a "Take Action" alert for your 2023 amended return, which requires your immediate attention. The system confirms receipt of your amendment on June 19, 2024, but processing has been halted pending additional information. The specific extension number (623) provided is significant - it typically indicates the IRS needs to verify specific details or requires additional documentation for your amendment. This isn't necessarily cause for alarm, but it does require prompt action on your part. The IRS has provided a direct line for resolution: 800-829-0582 ext 623, with specific operating hours of 7 AM to 7 PM, Monday through Friday. The requirement to have your amended return copy ready during the call suggests they'll need to review specific line items or entries with you. This type of "Take Action" message often appears when there are: - Missing supporting documents - Discrepancies that need clarification - Identity verification requirements - Mathematical errors requiring correction It's important to call during the specified hours and have all your documentation ready to avoid further delays in processing your amendment.

Instead of stressing about WMR messages, I've been using taxr.ai to analyze my transcripts. It costs $1 but gives you way more detail than these vague WMR messages. It actually tells you exactly what's going on and when to expect movement. https://taxr.ai

Extension 623 is specifically for amended return inquiries, so you're definitely calling the right number. I had a similar situation last year and it turned out they just needed to verify some W-2 information that didn't match what they had on file. The call took about 30 minutes total (including hold time) and they were able to release my return for processing right away. One thing that helped me was having my original return, amended return, AND all supporting documents (W-2s, 1099s, receipts, etc.) spread out in front of me before calling. They asked me to confirm specific dollar amounts from multiple forms. Also, if you get disconnected, write down the representative's ID number so you don't have to start over completely. Good luck! It's probably nothing major, just their standard verification process for amendments that have been sitting too long.

I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago! The "Take Action" message with extension 623 basically means they need to manually review something on your amended return before they can process it. In my case, it was because I had claimed a deduction that required additional verification. When I called, the rep was actually pretty helpful. They walked me through what they needed to verify and were able to update my file immediately. The whole call took maybe 20 minutes including hold time. Just make sure you have your SSN, the exact amount of your refund claim, and both your original and amended returns handy. The good news is that once they clear whatever flag is on your account, processing usually happens pretty quickly. Mine was processed within 10 days of the call. Don't stress too much - it's probably just a routine verification thing, especially since your return has been sitting there since June.

This is super reassuring to hear! 6 months is a long wait but at least you got through it. Did they tell you specifically what triggered the manual review, or was it just a general "we need to verify this deduction" type thing? I'm hoping mine goes as smoothly as yours did 🤞

Just wanted to share my experience with the exact same situation! Got the "Take Action" message for my 2022 amended return last year after it sat for 8 months. Called the 623 extension and turns out they just needed me to verify some business expense deductions I had claimed. The rep was actually really patient and walked me through each item they were questioning. Had to confirm amounts from my receipts and explain the business purpose for a few expenses. Once I provided the info over the phone, they released my return immediately and I got my refund about 2 weeks later. My advice: call early in the morning (like 7:05am) to avoid long hold times, have EVERYTHING organized beforehand (original return, amended return, all supporting docs), and don't panic - it's usually just routine verification stuff. The fact that they're asking you to call instead of sending a letter is actually good because you can resolve it faster than waiting for mail back and forth. Extension 623 reps are specifically trained for amended returns so they know what they're doing. You got this! 💪

This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you for sharing your experience with the same situation. It's so helpful to know that calling early works and that the 623 reps are actually trained specifically for amended returns. I was getting worried that something was seriously wrong, but it sounds like this is pretty routine. Definitely going to call at 7:05am sharp tomorrow with all my docs ready. Really appreciate the encouragement! 🙏

Been dealing with IRS stuff for years and the extension 623 "Take Action" message is actually one of the better outcomes you can get! It means they're actively working on your case and just need some quick verification rather than having it stuck in processing limbo. A few tips from someone who's been through this multiple times: 1. Call exactly at 7am - I'm talking 7:00:01am. The hold times increase exponentially after 8am 2. Have your amended return AND original return side by side - they'll want to compare line items 3. Write down the rep's name and any reference numbers they give you 4. If they can't resolve it on the first call, ask for a case number so you don't start from scratch next time The fact that your return was received in June and they're just now asking for verification actually suggests they're finally getting to the older amended returns in the queue. That's progress! Most people I know who got this message had their returns processed within 2-3 weeks after the call. Don't overthink it - extension 623 reps deal with this stuff all day and they're usually pretty efficient at getting things sorted out. You'll probably be off the phone in 15-20 minutes with good news! 👍

This is so helpful! I'm definitely setting my alarm for 6:55am tomorrow so I can call right at 7. The tip about having both returns side by side is smart - I hadn't thought about them wanting to compare line items. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here, it's making me feel so much better about this whole situation. Fingers crossed it goes as smoothly as everyone else's! 🤞

I had this exact same situation with my 2022 amended return! The "Take Action" message with extension 623 had me panicking too, but it turned out to be much simpler than I expected. They just needed to verify some income information that didn't quite match up in their system. When I called (took about 3 tries to get through), the rep was really professional and just walked me through confirming a few numbers from my W-2 and 1099 forms. The whole verification process took maybe 10 minutes once I got connected. She was able to clear the hold on my return right there on the call, and I actually saw movement in the system within a week. The key things that helped me: called right at 7am on a Tuesday (seemed like Mondays were always swamped), had my phone on speaker so I could flip through documents easily, and made sure I had both my original 2023 return and the amended version printed out and organized. Don't stress too much - if there was a serious problem they would have sent you a formal notice by mail. The fact that they're asking you to call usually means it's something they can resolve quickly over the phone. You've got this! 💪

Thank you so much for sharing your experience Miguel! It's really reassuring to hear that it was just a simple verification process and got resolved quickly. I'm definitely feeling more confident about calling now. The tip about using speakerphone is brilliant - I hadn't thought about how I'd need to flip through documents while on the call. Planning to call Tuesday morning at 7am sharp with everything organized. Really appreciate how supportive this community is! 🙏

I've been through this exact situation twice now! The "Take Action" message with extension 623 is actually pretty standard for amended returns that have been sitting for a while. Don't panic - it's usually just routine verification stuff. My first amended return got this message after 7 months, and it turned out they just needed me to verify some charitable deduction amounts. The second time (different tax year), they wanted to confirm some business expenses I had claimed. Both times, the call took less than 30 minutes including hold time, and they were able to process my return immediately after verification. Pro tips that worked for me: - Call at exactly 7:00am on a Tuesday or Wednesday (avoid Mondays - everyone calls then!) - Have your calculator ready - they might ask you to add up certain line items - Keep a notepad handy to write down the rep's name and any reference numbers - If you amended to claim a larger refund, they might just need to verify your bank account info The good news is that once you get through this verification call, amended returns typically process much faster than the initial 16-20 week timeframe. Mine both processed within 10 days of the call. Extension 623 reps are specifically trained for this stuff, so they know exactly what to look for. You're in good hands!

Hassan this is super helpful! I really appreciate you sharing both experiences - it gives me confidence that this is really just routine stuff. The tip about calling Tuesday/Wednesday instead of Monday is gold, I was planning to call Monday but now I'll wait for Tuesday. Having the calculator ready is such a practical tip too. It's really reassuring to know that processing speeds up after the verification call. Thank you for taking the time to share all these details! 🙏

I went through this exact same thing with my 2023 amended return! Got the "Take Action" message after waiting 9 months. The extension 623 line is specifically for amended return verifications, so you're definitely calling the right place. When I called (at 7:05am on a Wednesday), they just needed to verify some dependent information and a few deduction amounts. The rep was super patient and walked me through each item they were questioning. Had all my documents ready which made it go smoothly - took about 25 minutes total including hold time. The best part? They released my return for processing right there on the call! Got my refund direct deposited exactly 12 days later. My advice: call early (7am sharp), have both your original AND amended returns printed out, plus all supporting docs like W-2s and 1099s. Write down the rep's name and any confirmation numbers they give you. Don't stress - if it was a serious issue they would have sent you a CP notice by mail instead of just asking for a phone call. You've been waiting since June so you're definitely in the queue to get this resolved. The verification call is actually a good sign that they're finally processing the older amended returns! 🙌
