2022 Tax Refund Still Missing - Should I File for 2023?
Can anyone help me figure out why I haven't received my 2022 tax refund? Electronically filed 02-29-2023 March 2023: received paperwork about a 60 day random review. April 2023: got my direct deposit for the Child Tax Credit advance June 2023: received THE SAME paperwork about a 60 day random review. The paperwork stated if they contact me via mail within 60 days for additional info my refund would be released. It's now 02-25-2024 and still no response or refund. It's time to file taxes again and I'm scared to file because they still have yet to release my other refund. What do i do next?

You should absolutely file your 2023 taxes on time, regardless of what's happening with your 2022 return. Not filing on time could create even more issues. For your 2022 return, it sounds like you're caught in what we call a "processing loop" - this happens more than people realize. At this point, you need to contact the IRS directly to resolve this. You can either: 1. Call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 (be prepared to wait) 2. Visit a local Taxpayer Assistance Center (make an appointment first) 3. Contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service if you're experiencing financial hardship due to the delay

Thanks for the advice. I've tried calling the IRS multiple times but can never get through. I sit on hold for hours and then get disconnected. I'm worried that if I file for 2023, they'll just hold that refund too. This is so frustrating!

I was stuck in the same situation last year with my 2021 return while trying to file 2022. Random review that never ended. I finally used Claimyr.com to get through to an actual IRS agent after trying for weeks on my own. Got connected in about 15 minutes when I'd been trying for days before that. The agent was able to see exactly what was happening with my return and resolved it on the spot. My refund was released two weeks later. Definitely worth it to avoid the endless hold times. https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c

Did they actually fix anything or just tell you to keep waiting? I've heard mixed things about calling the IRS - sometimes they just tell you there's nothing they can do.

In my case, the agent actually found that my return was stuck in a specific department and hadn't been assigned for review. They put notes on my account and transferred it to the right team. I got a letter about a week later confirming the action, and then my refund was processed. It definitely wasn't just a "keep waiting" response.

Definitely file your 2023 taxes! I had a similar situation where my 2021 return was under review when it was time to file 2022. Filed anyway, and interestingly, my 2022 refund came through normally while my 2021 was still being processed. For your 2022 return, after this much time, you should request a tax transcript from the IRS website. It's free and will show exactly what's happening with your return - if it's been processed, under review, or if there are any specific hold codes.

Looking at your timeline, this is definitely unusual even with IRS delays. I'd recommend pulling your tax transcripts online to see what's actually happening with your return. You can get them instantly at irs.gov/transcripts. If you need help understanding what the transcript codes mean, I used https://taxr.ai to analyze mine when I was in a similar situation. It explained all the weird codes and gave me a clear picture of what was happening and what to expect next. Way better than trying to Google each code individually.

Thank you! I didn't even know I could check transcripts online. I'll try pulling them tonight and see what they say. If they're confusing I'll check out that site.

This happened to me too! The IRS has been severely backlogged since COVID, and some returns from previous years are still stuck in processing. Here's what worked for me: 1. Contact your local congressional representative's office - they have caseworkers who can inquire about your refund through special channels 2. File Form 911 (Taxpayer Advocate Service) if you're experiencing financial hardship 3. Request your Wage and Income transcript and Account transcript online And yes, definitely file your 2023 return on time. The systems are separate, and not filing will only create penalties.
