CashApp Rejected 2022 Refund of $5,478 Now Stuck in CP05 Review for 15+ Months with No Resolution

My 2022 refund got bounced back to IRS when my CashApp account closed. Been trying to get a paper check instead but no luck. I filed as Head of Household with 3 exemptions, with an Adjusted Gross Income of $34,372.00 and Taxable Income of $14,972.00. Looking at my IRS Record of Account (just pulled it today), I can see my refund history: TRANSACTIONS CODE EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION CYCLE DATE AMOUNT 150 Tax return filed 20230605 02-27-2023 $0.00 80221-426-89110-3 766 Credit to your account 04-16-2023 -$3,596.00 768 Earned income credit 04-16-2023 -$4,164.00 846 Refund issued 02-23-2023 $6,660.00 971 Request for replacement refund 05-06-2023 $0.00 971 Request for replacement refund 08-11-2023 $0.00 720 Refund repaid to account 03-07-2023 -$6,478.00 570 Additional account action pending 02-13-2024 $0.00 971 Notice issued 02-20-2024 $0.00 They processed my return on Feb 27, 2023, and issued the refund on Feb 23, but it got bounced back (code 720) on March 7 when my CashApp closed. My account currently shows a balance of -$6,478.00, which means they OWE ME that money. Got hit with 2 notices - 129c for the refund trace and CP05 for review. They started reviewing January 3rd 2024 and its been a whole year of them telling me to wait. I've made multiple requests for replacement refunds (as shown by the 971 codes in May and August 2023) but nothing has happened. The "Additional account action pending" from February 2024 is still there with no resolution. Tax advocate won't even take my case, just sends more referrals. No new notices since February 2024. Just stuck in this endless review loop and getting nowhere fast. My return was due/received by April 15, 2023, and now it's been over a year with no progress. The record shows they acknowledged the refund was repaid to my account, but I still haven't received it. This is so frustrating!

Tax pro here - CP05 reviews are definitely frustrating but there's a process to speed things up. First, request a copy of your wage and income transcript to verify all income was reported correctly. Then call IRS accounts management (not the general line) at 7am EST when they open. Request to speak with a supervisor and ask them to check if your case notes show any specific verification items still pending. They can sometimes push it through if everything checks out.

1-800-829-0582 ext 652. Pro tip: call Tuesdays-Thursdays, those are slower days 😉

Have you tried using taxr.ai? I was stuck in CP05 hell for months and it helped me figure out exactly what was holding up my refund. It costs $4.99 but totally worth it - the AI analyzes your transcript and tells you specifically what's causing delays and how to fix it. Way better than trying to piece together info from different IRS reps. Here's the link: https://taxr.ai

100% works! It found that my employer filed a corrected W2 that was triggering the review. Once I knew that, I could actually do something about it instead of just waiting around

The IRS is such a joke fr. They can take our money instantly but when its time to give it back suddenly everything needs a year long review 🤡

Did you claim EIC or child tax credit? Those usually trigger these reviews

Contact your local congressman/woman's office! They have special channels to the IRS and can sometimes get things moving
