$15,652 tax refund with EIC showing on transcript with codes 570 & 810 freeze since January - no updates or letters from IRS
I filed my taxes in early January of 2025 claiming Earned Income Credit since I was self-employed last year with income around $17,410.00. According to my transcript, I have a refund amount of $16,652.00 which includes withholding of $7,901.00, credit to my account of $2,237.00, and Earned Income Credit of $6,960.00. Looking at my transcript details: ACCOUNT BALANCE: -$16,652.00 ACCRUED INTEREST: $0.00 AS OF: Mar. 11, 2025 ACCRUED PENALTY: $0.00 AS OF: Mar. 11, 2025 ACCOUNT BALANCE PLUS ACCRUALS (this is not a payoff amount): -$16,652.00 INFORMATION FROM THE RETURN OR AS ADJUSTED: EXEMPTIONS: 03 FILING STATUS: Single ADJUSTED GROSS INCOME: $17,410.00 TAXABLE INCOME: $2,248.00 TAX PER RETURN: $1,446.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME TAXPAYER: $9,449.00 SE TAXABLE INCOME SPOUSE: $0.00 TOTAL SELF EMPLOYMENT TAX: $1,446.00 RETURN DUE DATE OR RETURN RECEIVED DATE (WHICHEVER IS LATER): Apr. 16, 2025 PROCESSING DATE: Mar. 11, 2025 TRANSACTIONS: CODE EXPLANATION OF TRANSACTION - CYCLE DATE - AMOUNT 150 Tax return filed - 20250805 03-11-2025 - $1,446.00 79211-427-95048-5 806 W-2 or 1099 withholding - 04-16-2025 - -$7,901.00 810 Refund freeze - 01-31-2025 - $0.00 766 Credit to your account - 04-16-2025 - -$2,237.00 570 Additional account action pending - 03-11-2025 - $0.00 768 Earned income credit - 04-16-2025 - -$6,960.00 My transcript shows code 810 Refund freeze from January 31 and code 570 Additional account action pending from March 11. It's now April and I still haven't received anything. No updates, no letters, nothing. I've tried calling the IRS 5 times but can't get through. The Where's My Refund tool just says "still processing." Has anyone experienced this before? Is there something I'm missing? I really need this money for some medical bills I've been putting off. Does the "Additional account action pending" code mean they found something wrong with my return? Is it because of the Earned Income Credit? I'm confused because everything on my return seems straightforward - I had self-employment income of $9,449.00 with total adjusted gross income of $17,410.00, and I claimed the appropriate credits. Why would they freeze my refund without telling me why?

So looking at your transcript, I can see several things happening: - You have a refund freeze (code 810) from January 31, 2025 - There's a 570 code which means additional account action pending from March 10 - Your total refund amount is $15,652 (combination of withholding $7,901 + credit $2,237 + EIC $6,960) This combination of codes typically means your return is under review. The IRS often reviews returns with Earned Income Credit claims, especially with self-employment income. The 570 code means they're still processing something with your return. You should expect to receive a letter (usually CP05) explaining what they're reviewing. If it's been more than 3 weeks since the 570 code appeared and you haven't received a letter, you might want to call the IRS or contact Taxpayer Advocate Service. The fact that your withholding amount is so high compared to your income is likely one reason for the review. Did you have other income sources with withholding?

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation. I did have some W2 income earlier in the year before switching to self-employment. I haven't received any letters yet, and it's been over 4 weeks since that 570 code. I'll try calling again.

I had something similar happen last year. The 570 code hung around for almost 3 months before I got my refund. No letter ever came. The IRS is just slow AF sometimes.

Not to scare you but my 570 code turned into an audit. Make sure you have all your self-employment documentation ready just in case!

Yes, and to add to what others are saying - your EIC amount of $6,960 is at the higher end of the credit range, which can sometimes trigger additional verification. Keep checking your transcript weekly for updates.

This is getting so stressful. Do yall think I should call the Taxpayer Advocate? Or just wait?

I'd try calling IRS first one more time, and if you can't get through, then yes - Taxpayer Advocate might be your best option at this point, especially if you mentioned you need the funds urgently for medical bills.

I was in a similar situation with a frozen refund and 570 code a few weeks ago. I was completely lost trying to figure out my transcript until I found this tool called taxr.ai that explained everything. It basically showed me exactly what was happening with my refund and what the codes meant in plain English. Honestly saved me so much time compared to trying to interpret all those codes and dates myself. Highly recommend checking it out: https://taxr.ai

Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

It does WAY more than just read transcripts! It actually analyzes everything, explains what each code means specifically for YOUR situation, and tells you what to expect next. It even gave me a timeline prediction for my refund that was spot on. I'm telling everyone I know about it now. Best tax tool I've ever used, hands down.

Not at all! I was skeptical too but it's legit. It actually helped me understand why my refund was delayed and what I needed to do. Ended up saving me from having to hire a tax pro which would have cost way more. Seriously the best money I've spent during this whole tax nightmare 💯

After waiting 2 months for my refund with a similar freeze, I finally got through to the IRS using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). Instead of spending hours on hold, they got me a callback from an actual IRS agent who explained everything about my account. Agent told me my return was flagged for review because of the EIC claim but she released my refund right there on the phone! Money was in my account 4 days later. Totally worth it to finally know what was going on.

Did you have to give them personal info? Sounds kinda sketch tbh

Nope! They just connect you with the IRS callback system. You still talk directly to the IRS agents. It just saves you from the endless hold times and busy signals. The peace of mind from actually talking to someone who could help was priceless.

how long did it take to get the callback?

I got my callback in about 2.5 hours. Way better than the 6+ hours I spent trying to call them myself over multiple days. And the agent was actually super helpful once I got through.

Not sure if this helps but I had a similar situation happen last year. The 570 code stayed on my transcript for about 6 weeks, and then one day it changed to 571 (resolved) followed by 846 (refund issued). Never got any letter or explanation. My advice is to keep checking your transcript weekly. The Where's My Refund tool is basically useless for these situations.

That gives me some hope! I'll keep checking my transcript. Did you try calling them at all during those 6 weeks?

I tried calling twice but never got through. I gave up after that and just waited. In my case patience worked out but I know that's frustrating when you need the $$.

The combo of codes 810 (refund freeze) and 570 (additional action pending) is pretty common for EIC claims, especially with self-employment income. The IRS has been reviewing these very closely because of high fraud rates. Your withholding amount also seems pretty high relative to your income which might be raising flags in their system. Do you have anything on your account transcript showing that they sent you a letter? Look for a 971 code.

Man the IRS is such a joke. They can take all the time in the world to give us OUR money back, but if we owe them even a penny they expect payment immediately with interest and penalties. The whole system is broken. 🤡

Preach! 👏 And they wonder why people hate doing taxes. Last year they held my refund for 8 months without explanation.

The crazy thing is they're understaffed and underfunded but then they waste resources on random reviews like this. Make it make sense!!

I think your refund is being held because the amount is unusually large compared to your income. $15k+ refund on $17k income is going to trigger review almost every time. I'm not saying you did anything wrong, but from the IRS perspective that's a red flag. Have you double-checked your W2 withholding amount to make sure it's entered correctly?

Noah Ali
Yeah I actually triple-checked all my numbers. I had a high-paying job in early 2024 with lots of withholding, then went self-employed and made much less for the rest of the year. So my total income is low but withholding is high.

Ah that makes more sense. Still, that kind of situation tends to get flagged for manual review. Hang in there.

Quick question - have you checked your mail carefully? Sometimes the IRS sends a letter requesting more information but it looks like junk mail. My spouse almost threw ours away last year thinking it was spam.

I've been checking the mail everyday and haven't seen anything from the IRS. I'll double check though, thanks for the reminder.

With that amount of EIC and income level, they might be verifying your self-employment income. Do you have good records of your business income/expenses? Make sure you have all that documentation ready just in case they ask for verification.

You're definetely getting manually reviewed. I work in tax prep and ANY return with Earned Income Credit over $5k and self-employment income gets flagged. Its part of their fraud prevention. Unfortunately it means honest people like you get caught in the crossfire and have to wait. Keep watching for code 971 (notice issued) followed by either 421 (exam) or 571 (resolved) on your transcript.

Thank you for this insight! I had no idea they were specifically targeting EIC claims over a certain amount. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that 571 code to show up soon!

Not the person you replied to but yeah, EIC is the most abused tax credit so they scrutinize it like crazy. The self-employment aspect makes it even more likely to get reviewed.

Omg I just went thru this EXACT same situation! Filed in February, had 810 and 570 codes, refund amount around $14k. I finally broke down and used taxr.ai after seeing it recommended here and it showed me EXACTLY what was happening with my return. Turns out I was in the income verification program and wouldn't have known without the detailed explanation. Check it out: https://taxr.ai - seriously worth it to understand what's happening!

Trust me, after spending HOURS trying to decipher transcript codes and getting nowhere, it was worth every penny. I finally understood exactly what was happening instead of just guessing. My refund was released a week after I figured out what was going on!

Both actually! It helped me understand exactly what was happening AND told me precisely what to say when calling the IRS. I'm tech-challenged and not great with tax stuff, but it made everything super clear.

I may be in the minority here but I'd just keep waiting. I had the exact same situation last year - 570 code and a large EIC claim. I didn't call or do anything special and my refund just showed up one day about 8 weeks after I filed. The system is frustrating but sometimes it does eventually work without you having to do anything.

After beating my head against the wall trying to understand my own transcript with similar codes, I finally got through to an IRS agent using claimyr.com. Took like 20 minutes to get a callback instead of the FOUR DAYS I spent trying to call myself. The agent explained everything and actually fixed the issue right on the phone. My refund was released that same day and deposited a week later. Seriously the best decision I made in this whole mess.

Got it completely resolved! The agent I spoke with was able to see that my return was just sitting in review queue but nothing was actually wrong with it. She manually released the hold while I was on the call. I checked my transcript the next day and saw the 571 code (resolved) and 846 (refund issued). Would never have happened if I hadn't gotten through to someone.

Looking at your numbers - your total refund is $15,652 but your income is only $17,410? That's a HUGE percentage getting refunded, which is probably why you're being reviewed. That's not necessarily bad, but it's unusual enough that they want to verify everything is correct. The system flags returns that have refunds exceeding certain percentages of income.

FWIW those 570 holds can last anywhere from a few weeks to several months. I've seen some get resolved in 3 weeks and others take 8+ months. There's really no way to know unless you can actually talk to someone at the IRS. Did you check if you qualify for any of the priority services like hardship assistance?

If you're facing immediate financial hardship (like eviction, utility shutoff, medical emergency) you can request expedited service. Call the regular IRS number and specifically mention hardship when you finally get through. They can sometimes prioritize your case.

Your transcript actually looks standard for an EIC review. I had almost the same codes last year (810 and 570) and wound up getting a CP05 letter about a month later asking me to verify my income. Once I sent in the requested documents, it was processed within 3 weeks. Keep an eye out for a letter - it might be on the way but just hasn't shown up on your transcript yet.

Wait a second - how did you claim $6,960 in EIC with only $9,449 in self-employment income? That seems really high based on the EIC tables I'm familiar with. Did you have qualifying children? If the numbers don't add up correctly that could be causing the delay.
0 coins
Noah Ali
Yes, I have 3 qualifying children. That's why the EIC amount is high.

Oscar Murphy
Ah that makes more sense. Still, having 3 qualifying children plus self-employment income and a large refund is basically hitting all the review triggers at once for the IRS. Not saying anything is wrong with your return, just that you've unintentionally checked all the boxes for extra scrutiny.

After spending literally 14+ hours on hold with the IRS over multiple days I gave up and tried claimyr.com - got a callback from an actual IRS agent in under an hour. Turns out my 570 code was because they needed to verify something simple that I could have fixed months ago if anyone had told me. The agent fixed it on the spot and my refund was issued 5 days later. Wish I'd known about this service months earlier!
