2022 Fuel Tax Credit (8849) Audit Concerns - Anyone Flagged Yet?

I'm seeing lots of people who claimed the fuel tax credit last year getting audited. Has anyone gotten the audit letter yet? I claimed it on my 2022 return and my transcript is showing some weird codes. Getting nervous about this whole situation tbh.

Tax pro here. The IRS is definitely scrutinizing Form 8849 claims from 2022. They've flagged many returns for review due to an uptick in fraudulent claims. If you legitimately used the fuel for farming, mining, or other qualified business purposes, keep ALL your receipts and documentation handy.

how long does the review usually take? my return has been stuck since march 🙄

Reviews can take 6-8 months, sometimes longer if they need additional documentation

Hey guys instead of stressing about codes, I've been using taxr.ai to analyze my transcript. It tells you exactly what's happening and if you're likely to be audited. Worth the $1 imo https://taxr.ai

100% works! It showed me exactly why my return was flagged and what docs I needed. Better than playing detective with transcript codes lol

Just got my audit notice too 😰 They're asking for detailed records of fuel purchases, business use logs, and proof of qualified activities. The letter mentions they're specifically targeting 8849 forms from 2022 due to "compliance concerns." Anyone know if there's a standard response template or should I just gather everything and send it in?

There's no standard template but definitely organize everything systematically before sending. Create a cover letter explaining each document, separate your receipts by month/quarter, and include business logs showing dates/purposes. Don't just dump everything in a box - the cleaner your response, the smoother the process usually goes.

Same here - got the audit letter last week and I'm honestly terrified. I run a small landscaping business and claimed fuel credits for our equipment, but my record keeping wasn't the greatest in 2022. Does anyone know if they accept reconstructed records if you can prove the business expenses through bank statements and invoices? I have most of my fuel receipts but some are faded or missing completely. Really kicking myself for not being more organized 😣
