DEO still taking taxes even after updating my preference - how long for tax withholding changes to take effect?

I submitted a change to my DEO CONNECT account last Tuesday to STOP the tax withholding from my unemployment payments because I need the full amount right now to cover rent. But I just got another payment today and they're STILL taking out the taxes! Does anyone know how long it takes for these tax withholding changes to actually take effect? Is there somewhere else I need to update this besides the preferences section? Getting really frustrated because that's almost $45 I really needed this week.

Tax withholding changes usually take effect within 1-2 payment cycles after you make the update in CONNECT. So if you just made the change last Tuesday, it's possible your most recent payment was already being processed with the old withholding preference. The system isn't immediate - DEO typically batches payment calculations several days before the actual deposit date. I'd expect your next payment to reflect the updated preference. Just make sure you were in the right section - it should be under "Tax Withholding Option" in your claimant profile settings.

Thx for explaining! I didnt realize there was a delay. So your saying next week should be correct? I definetly did it in the tax withholding section and got a confirmation screen, so sounds like I just need to wait.

You might need to call DEO directly. When I had this problem last year, I found out my preference change didn't actually save in their system even though the website showed a confirmation. The rep fixed it immediately. Try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a live agent - worked amazingly for me after I spent days trying to get through. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/UzW_hbUy-ss?si=zORd51jeq1GX5Ldj. Seriously saved me so much frustration dealing with the constant busy signals and disconnects.

I had this exact problem in April with my tax withholding change. It took exactly 2 payment cycles for the change to process. The DEO rep I spoke with explained that payment batches are processed on a schedule ahead of the actual payment date, so your change request has to be in the system before that batch processing starts. If your payment comes on Tuesday, the batch probably runs Friday or Saturday before, so any changes made after that cutoff won't apply until the next cycle. Hang in there - just wait one more payment and if it's still wrong after that, THEN you should definitely call.

And make sure to keep track of these withholdings for your taxes next year! I got so confused with all the changing around I did that I completely messed up my tax return. Had to explain to IRS why my reported withholding didn't match what DEO reported. SUCH A HEADACHE!!!

THEY TOOK 3 WEEKS TO UPDATE MINE!!! I even called and they said it was updated but still took taxes out for 2 more payments. The DEO system is a JOKE! Good luck getting a straight answer from anyone there.

3 weeks?! That's ridiculous! Really hope mine doesn't take that long. Did you ever get any of the withheld money back or is it just gone until tax time?

When I worked at the DEO call center (left in 2024), this was actually a common question. The tax withholding updates follow their own schedule separate from the regular payment processing. Here's what happens: 1. You make the change in CONNECT 2. The change gets queued for processing in the tax batch (runs weekly) 3. Once processed, it's applied to future payment calculations Depending on when you made the change relative to the tax batch schedule, it typically takes 1-2 payment cycles, but can occasionally take 3 cycles in worst-case scenarios. The withheld money isn't lost - you'll get it back when you file your taxes next year if you're due a refund. Unfortunately, there's no way to get it released sooner once it's been withheld. If it doesn't change after 2 more payments, you should call and ask them to verify the change was properly saved in their system.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! Guess I'll just have to be patient and wait another week or two. And you're right that I'll get it back with taxes, but just frustrating when you need every penny right now. Appreciate the insider knowledge!

my cousin had this problem too! he said he talked to someone at DEO who told him they process those changes on Thursdays so if you do it after Thursday it won't happen till the next week. dunno if thats true but might explain why its taking so long for you

This actually aligns with what I've heard - there are specific processing days for different types of account changes. Tax withholding being processed on Thursdays sounds plausible, though I can't confirm that's still current. The DEO often changes their internal procedures.
