Which work search form do I need for EDD? Husband struggling with online certification
My husband just got approved for unemployment last week and he's having trouble with his first certification. He's supposed to be recording his work search activities but doesn't know where to find the right form! Is there an official EDD form for this? He tried looking online through his UI account but got confused with all the different sections. He also tried calling but couldn't get through (as usual with EDD). Can someone please explain in simple terms what exactly he needs to fill out and where to find it? He's worried about doing it wrong and losing benefits. Thanks in advance for your help!

theres no seprate form u just list it on ur certification when u do it every 2 weeks. when u get to question 3 about looking for work just put YES and then it gives u boxes to fill in where u applied

•Oh really? So it's just part of the regular certification? That helps a lot, thank you! He was stressing thinking he needed to download something separate.

The work search record is part of your bi-weekly certification that you complete through UI Online. When you answer "yes" to question #3 (Did you look for work?), the system will prompt you to enter details about your job contacts or work search activities. Technically, there IS a paper form called the DE 8578 Work Search Record that you can download from the EDD website to help track your activities offline, but you don't need to submit this form unless EDD specifically requests it during an eligibility interview. It's just a helpful tool to keep track of your activities before entering them online. The key is making sure your husband documents at least 3 work search activities per week. These can include job applications, networking, creating profiles on job sites, attending workshops, etc.

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I'll help him look for that DE 8578 form to keep track offline first, then he can enter it all during certification. That sounds much easier than trying to remember everything when it's time to certify.

EDD makes everything SO COMPLICATED!!! My husband went through this too and almost got disqualified because he didn't record his job searches correctly. Make sure he's saving EVERYTHING - screenshots of applications, confirmation emails, etc. They randomly audit people and if you can't prove you did the searches, they'll make you pay everything back!!

•Oh no, that's scary! I'll definitely tell him to start saving all the application confirmations. Did your husband have to go through an interview or anything when they audited him?

hey just to add something quick - if ur husband has a union hiring hall or is a member of a union that regularly refers members to jobs, the work search requirements are different. he should check if that applies to him

•He's not in a union, but thanks for mentioning that! Good to know there are different requirements for different situations.

I had the same issue last month trying to figure out the work search requirements. I discovered you can actually use Claimyr to connect with an EDD rep quickly and get personalized guidance. I was on hold for hours before discovering this - with Claimyr I got through to someone who walked me through exactly what I needed to do for my specific situation. Saved me so much stress! Check out their video demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km or go to claimyr.com

•Does that actually work? I thought those services were scams... did they actually connect you to a real EDD person?

•Yes, they connect you to actual EDD representatives - it's not a third-party answering service. They just help you bypass the phone queue. Totally worth it when you need answers right away, especially for time-sensitive issues like certification problems.

I just wanted to share what my EDD interviewer told me specifically about work search. For regular UI claims in 2025, you need to do AT LEAST 3 work search activities per week (so 6 for the two-week certification period). What counts as work search activities: - Applying for jobs (online or in person) - Contacting employers directly about openings - Creating profiles on job search sites - Sending resumes or filling out applications - Registering with CalJOBS - Attending job fairs or networking events - Taking skills assessments for job matching The key is to DOCUMENT EVERYTHING with dates, employer names, position applied for, method of contact, and results if any. I use a simple spreadsheet rather than the official form, but it has all the same info.

•This list is super helpful! I didn't realize there were so many different activities that could count. I'll set up a spreadsheet for him with these categories to make it easier to track. Thank you!

when i first got unemployment last spring i was totally confused by all this too!! the way i do it is i keep notes in my phone with all the jobs i apply for each week (company, position, date, how i applied) and then when i certify i just copy it into the boxes. its actually not as complicated as it seems once u get the hang of it!

•That's a great idea to use notes on the phone! My husband is always on his phone so that would be easier for him than keeping a paper form. Thanks for the suggestion!

One more important thing to mention - if your husband is having trouble navigating the UI Online system, EDD offers some helpful tutorial videos on their YouTube channel. They walk through the certification process step by step. Much easier than trying to figure it out from their written instructions. Also, if he continues having trouble getting through on the phone, the best times to call are usually right when they open at 8:00 AM or between 1:00-2:00 PM when call volume typically dips a bit. Monday and Tuesday are their busiest days, so Wednesday through Friday afternoon tends to be slightly better.

•I had no idea they had tutorial videos! That would be perfect for him since he's more of a visual learner. I'll check out the YouTube channel. And thanks for the tip about call times - we'll try Wednesday afternoon next time he needs to reach them.

Just wanted to add that your husband should also register with CalJOBS if he hasn't already - it's California's official job search site and EDD actually requires registration for most claimants. You can find it at caljobs.ca.gov. Once he's registered there, he can use job searches on that site as part of his weekly work search activities. It also has some decent resources for resume building and career exploration that might be helpful during his job search.

•Oh wow, I didn't know CalJOBS registration was required! We definitely need to get him signed up there ASAP. Thanks for sharing the website link - that makes it so much easier. It sounds like using that site could help him meet his work search requirements too, which is perfect since he needs to do 3 activities per week.

Quick tip that really helped me - I created a simple template in my phone's notes app with fields for "Company Name," "Position," "Date Applied," "Method (online/email/in-person)," and "Contact Info." Every time I apply somewhere, I just fill out a new entry. When certification time comes, I have everything organized and ready to copy into the UI Online boxes. Makes the whole process way less stressful! Your husband might find this approach easier than trying to remember everything later.

•That template idea is brilliant! I'm going to help him set that up right away. Having those specific fields will make sure he doesn't forget any important details when he's applying for jobs. It's so much better than trying to piece everything together from memory during certification. Thanks for sharing such a practical solution!
