Do we need to submit weekly claims for ESD unemployment benefits EVERY week?
My husband just filed his initial unemployment claim last week after being laid off from his construction job. He got that alert to apply and completed the initial application. We're both confused about the weekly claim process now. I don't see anywhere on his eServices account to submit this week's claim. Does he need to keep filing EVERY single week? And what happens if he misses this week's deadline? Will he lose benefits or have to start the whole application process over again? The website is so confusing and we're stressing about making a mistake that costs us the benefits we really need right now. Any help would be super appreciated!

Yes, he absolutely needs to file a weekly claim EVERY week he wants to receive benefits - this is the most important thing to understand about unemployment! After the initial application, he needs to submit a weekly claim for each week he remains unemployed. The system opens for weekly claims on Sunday and closes Saturday night at 11:59pm. To submit a weekly claim, he should: 1. Log into his eServices account 2. Go to "UI Claim" or "Weekly Claim" section (it should be on the main dashboard) 3. Follow the prompts to submit for the current week If he doesn't see the option to file a weekly claim yet, it might be because the system is still processing his initial application. Sometimes it takes 1-2 weeks before you can file your first weekly claim.

•Thank you so much! We'll check again tomorrow to see if the weekly claim option appears. Do you know what happens if his initial application is still processing and he misses filing for this week? Will he lose that week of benefits completely?

omg the weekly claims thing confused me so much too!! you HAVE to file every week or you won't get paid for that week. my boyfriend forgot one week and lost the whole payment - they don't back pay unless you have a really good reason and go through appeals. check on sunday morning thats when the system updates and the weekly claim button should show up

•This happened to my sister too! ESD is super strict about the weekly claims. Even if you miss by just a few minutes after midnight on Saturday, they consider it late and you have to go through this whole process to try to get it reopened. Such a headache!

To add to what others have said, there's a specific timeline to be aware of: - Initial application (what your husband already did) - Waiting week (first week after application - generally not paid) - Weekly claims start after that If his initial application is still being processed, the system might not show the weekly claim option yet. However, he should still try to file as soon as it becomes available. If you're concerned his application is stuck or there's a system issue, I'd recommend contacting ESD directly. One reliable way to reach an ESD agent quickly is using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you bypass the long hold times and connect directly with an ESD agent who can check his claim status and tell you exactly when he can start filing weekly claims. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Missing a weekly claim can result in benefit interruption, so it's worth getting clarification directly from ESD about his specific situation.

•Thanks for explaining the timeline! I didn't realize the first week is usually a waiting week that doesn't get paid. That makes sense why we might not see the weekly claim option yet. We'll check again on Sunday and if it's not there, we'll try contacting ESD directly. Those hold times are brutal though, so I appreciate the Claimyr suggestion.

THE ESD SYSTEM IS SUCH A NIGHTMARE!!! I almost lost 2 weeks of benefits because nobody tells you clearly that you MUST file every single week without fail. The website is designed horribly and half the time the buttons don't even show up where they're supposed to. My advice: Set a reminder on your phone for EVERY SUNDAY MORNING to file the weekly claim. Do it first thing before you forget. And screenshot everything in case they try to say you didn't file when you actually did (happened to me and took 6 WEEKS to resolve!!!). Also, not to scare you, but if his claim goes to adjudication for ANY reason, you're looking at potentially MONTHS of waiting with no money coming in. The system is completely broken.

•While I understand your frustration, I think it's important to note that most claims don't go to adjudication. The system can be confusing at first, but it becomes routine after a few weeks. The Sunday reminder is excellent advice though - consistency is key with weekly claims.

when i filed last year my first payment took almost 3 weeks to come through but then after that it was pretty smooth. just make sure he answers all the weekly questions honestly especially about job search activities. they want 3 job search activities every week and they do sometimes audit those so keep records

•Oh that's good to know about the job search activities! Do you know if those are required immediately or is there a grace period at the beginning? He's actually been told by his employer that they might call him back in a few weeks if they get a new contract.

If his employer might call him back soon, he should request "standby" status. This exempts him from job search requirements for a limited time. He'll need to indicate this when filing his weekly claims. Regarding your original question: Yes, weekly claims must be filed EVERY week between Sunday and Saturday. Missing a week means no benefits for that week. If he misses 4 consecutive weeks, his entire claim will be closed and he'd need to reapply. If his initial application is still processing, he should still see the weekly claim option within about 7-10 days after submitting the initial application. I recommend checking both the "UI Claim" section and the "Weekly Claim" option in the left navigation menu, as sometimes it appears in one place but not the other (odd system quirk). Even while his initial claim is pending, he should still file weekly claims to ensure he doesn't miss out on any benefits once approved.

•Thank you so much for mentioning the standby status! I had no idea that was an option. His boss did say it might be 3-4 weeks before they know about the new contract. I'll make sure he mentions this when filing. And we'll definitely check both the UI Claim section and Weekly Claim option.

i forgot to say my friend missed a week once and she called ESD right away and they let her backfile for the missed week. BUT she had to call within like 3 days of missing it and had a good excuse (she was in the hospital). so if he does miss a week don't give up, call them asap!!

I had the same issue last summer when I filed. The weekly claim button didn't show up until about 10 days after my initial application. Something about how their system processes new claims. But heres the weird thing - when it finally appeared, I was able to backfile for the week I thought I missed! So don't panic yet, just keep checking every day. The ESD systems are really outdated lol.

•This is correct - there's often a processing period after the initial application before weekly claims become available. The system should allow backfiling for those initial weeks once the claim is fully processed. However, after that initial period, weekly claims must be filed on time every week.
