Can my husband reapply after his 5 weeks of EDD payments end? Email options?
My husband only has about 5 weeks of unemployment payments left (he gets a deposit every 2 weeks so that's 3 more payments). I'm trying to figure out if he can reapply for more benefits after his claim runs out or if there's some kind of extension available? I've heard conflicting things from friends and family about whether you can file a new claim immediately. I really don't want him to have a gap in benefits while we're still trying to find stable work in his field. Calling EDD seems impossible - I tried three times last week and kept getting the 'too many callers' message. Is there an email option to ask EDD these questions instead of calling? The website is so confusing and I can't find a clear answer about reapplying or any email contact info. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately, there's no direct email option for general EDD questions. Your best options are: 1) Check the UI Online portal - there's a Contact EDD button where you can send a secure message through your account 2) Use the Ask EDD form on their website (though responses can take 5-7 business days) 3) Try calling during non-peak hours (early morning Tuesday-Thursday) Regarding reapplying - he'll need to wait until his benefit year ends before filing a new claim. The benefit year is 12 months from when he first filed, not when his payments run out. If he hasn't worked and earned enough wages during this benefit year, he might not qualify for a new claim right away.

•Thank you so much for this info! I didn't know about the Contact EDD button on the portal. I'll have him check that. Do you know how long they typically take to respond to those messages? And that's disappointing about having to wait until the benefit year ends... I was afraid of that. I appreciate your help!

ur husband probably can't get more $ after his benefits exhaust unless he worked during this claim period and earned enough wages. The benefit yr is 12 months from initial filing date. there's no email option they want u to call which is impossible most of the time!! Ask EDD form takes FOREVER to get a response.

•This isn't entirely accurate. While it's true he'd need to wait until his benefit year ends to file a new claim, there are exceptions. If he's worked during this claim period and earned enough qualifying wages, he might be eligible for a new claim after exhausting benefits. He should carefully check his specific situation before assuming he can't file. The EDD website has a calculator to help determine eligibility based on wages.

I just went through this exact situation last month! After my 26 weeks ran out, I couldn't file a new claim right away. I tried calling EDD every single day for TWO WEEKS straight and kept getting the "maximum callers" message or would wait on hold for 2+ hours only to get disconnected. Finally I found Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an EDD rep in less than 20 minutes. They have this service that basically keeps calling EDD for you until they get through. Worked perfectly and I didn't waste days trying to call. Here's their video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The rep confirmed I couldn't file a new claim until my benefit year ended (which was still 5 months away). But she did check if I qualified for any extensions - I didn't, but it's worth asking about in your husband's case.

•Thanks for sharing your experience! That sounds so frustrating having to call for two weeks straight. I'll check out that service if we can't get through on our own. Did the rep give you any insight about what you're supposed to do during those months between benefits running out and being able to file a new claim? That gap is what I'm worried about.

THE EDD IS A COMPLETE DISASTER!!! I went through this SAME EXACT thing in January. My benefits ran out but my benefit year wasn't over. NO ONE tells you what to do!!! The website is USELESS and calling is IMPOSSIBLE! I spent 3 WEEKS trying to get a straight answer! They have a "Contact Us" form buried deep in the website but they NEVER RESPOND to it! It's just for show! The only way to get REAL help is to actually talk to a human but they make that nearly IMPOSSIBLE on purpose!! Your husband WILL have a gap in benefits - that's how they designed the system! There are NO extensions anymore like during COVID. Once benefits exhaust, you're OUT OF LUCK until your benefit year ends! It's CRIMINAL how they treat people!

Hi there, I work with an employment agency and help clients navigate EDD regularly. Here's what you need to know: 1. You can't email EDD directly, but your husband can use the Contact EDD feature in his UI Online account to send a message about his specific claim. 2. Regarding reapplying: After his benefits exhaust, he cannot file a new claim until his benefit year ends (12 months from initial filing date). 3. Important: If your husband worked during this benefit year and earned enough wages, he might qualify for a new claim after his current benefits run out. He should have received a Notice of Wages Used (DE 1081) showing how much of his wages were used for this claim. 4. Alternative: While waiting for eligibility to file a new claim, he could look into other assistance programs like CalFresh or CalWORKs depending on your household situation. Hope this helps!

•Thank you for this detailed information! We'll definitely look at that Notice of Wages form to see what it says. He did pick up some part-time work for about 2 months during this benefit year, but I'm not sure if it was enough to qualify for anything new. The CalFresh suggestion is really helpful too - I hadn't thought about looking into other programs during the gap. I appreciate your expertise!

•Going in person is actually a great suggestion that many people forget about. While there may be a wait, you can often get much clearer answers to complex questions. Just be sure to bring all relevant documentation and your ID.

To answer your specific questions: 1. No, there is no direct email option for EDD. You can only send secure messages through UI Online or use the Ask EDD form on their website. 2. About reapplying: After exhausting regular UI benefits, your husband must wait until his benefit year ends before filing a new claim. A benefit year is 12 months from the Sunday of the week he initially filed. 3. Eligibility for a new claim requires sufficient earnings in the base period (typically the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters before filing). He needs approximately $1,300 in his highest quarter to qualify. 4. If he worked during this benefit year and earned enough wages, he might qualify for a new claim after exhausting current benefits, even if his benefit year hasn't ended. This is called a "recomputation" and is worth investigating. I recommend having him check his UI Online account for his benefit year end date. It should be listed on the claim summary page.

•Thank you for explaining this so clearly! I didn't know about the "recomputation" option - that's definitely worth looking into since he did work for a short period. I'll have him check his UI Online account for the benefit year end date and the exact amount of benefits remaining. Really appreciate the detailed information!

I'm going through something similar right now. My payments are about to run out next month but my benefit year doesn't end until November! I've been looking EVERYWHERE for answers about what to do during that gap period. Something nobody mentioned yet - if your husband can't file a new claim right away, he should still certify for benefits every two weeks even after receiving his final payment. My friend's uncle's EDD rep told him this keeps his claim active in the system and shows he's still looking for work. Not sure if it helps with anything but that's what I'm planning to do... Also does anyone know if we're supposed to close our claim somehow after benefits run out or just leave it open?

•This is partially correct but needs clarification. Once benefits are exhausted, the system will not allow further certifications - it automatically stops prompting for them. Your claim remains open until the benefit year ends, but in an inactive status. You don't need to (and can't) manually close a claim. When the benefit year ends, you'll need to file a new claim if you're still unemployed and meet eligibility requirements.
