Back to California Unemployment

When will the $600 be added to my California EDD unemployment payment?

I've been checking my UI Online account every single day and I still don't see the extra $600 added to my unemployment payment. It's been two weeks since I certified for my weekly claim and my balance is just showing the regular benefit amount. I work in the restaurant industry and got laid off about a month ago, filed my initial claim right away, and got approved pretty quickly which was honestly a relief. But now I'm confused about when the additional payment is supposed to show up. My EDD payment history only shows the base weekly benefit amount hitting my Bank of America debit card. Is there a separate certification I need to do? Does California EDD add the $600 automatically or do I have to request it somehow? I've tried calling EDD to ask but I cannot get through to an actual person no matter what time I call. Going crazy over here trying to figure out if I missed a step somewhere.

The $600 federal supplement you're asking about was part of the FPUC program that expired years ago - it's no longer being paid out. As of 2025, there is no active $600 add-on to regular California EDD unemployment benefits. Your weekly benefit amount is based solely on your previous wages, with a current maximum of $450 per week for regular UI. If you believe your benefit amount is calculated incorrectly, you'd want to review your Monetary Determination letter that EDD mailed you after your claim was approved - that document shows exactly how they calculated your payment amount.

Wait seriously?? I saw something online saying $600 gets added and I thought that was still happening. So there's no extra payment coming at all?

0 coins

Yeah the $600 thing was a COVID-era thing, it ended a long time ago. The internet is full of outdated info about it unfortunately.

0 coins

Correct - that supplement ended in 2020. What you might be thinking of is possibly some news coverage about proposals that never passed, or just old articles still circulating. Your base benefit amount from EDD is what you'll receive each week you certify.

0 coins

I remember being confused about this exact same thing when I first filed. All those old Reddit threads and news articles still floating around made it sound like the $600 was still a thing. To be honest California EDD's own website isn't the clearest either. Your benefit amount should be on your Award Notice - have you checked that document to see what your weekly benefit amount actually is? That'll at least tell you what to expect each payment cycle.

I did get a letter but I kind of skimmed it. Going to go dig it out now and actually read the whole thing.

0 coins

read the whole letter carefully op, mine had a different amount than i expected and i had to call edd to ask about it

0 coins

If you need to actually get someone at California EDD on the phone to go over your payment questions, I went through the same phone nightmare recently. Spent almost two weeks trying to get through. Someone on here mentioned Claimyr - it's a service that holds your place in the EDD phone queue and calls you back when an agent is available. I was really skeptical but tried it at claimyr.com and got a callback within a few hours. There's a demo video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - way less stressful than hitting redial for hours on end.

0 coins

does this actually work? i've been trying to reach edd for like 3 weeks now

0 coins

It worked for me, I got through to a live EDD agent and they walked me through my payment breakdown. Obviously I can't guarantee your experience but it was way better than anything else I tried.

0 coins

ive heard of claimyr before, a coworker used it when her claim went into adjudication. said it saved her a ton of time

0 coins

OK so just to make sure everyone's on the same page here because I see people getting confused about this ALL THE TIME - there is currently NO federal supplement to California unemployment. Not $600, not $300, nothing. Regular UI in California right now is just your calculated weekly benefit amount based on your base period wages. The max is $450/week. That's it. If anyone told you there's extra money being added they are either wrong or looking at very old information from 2020-2021.

0 coins

thank you for saying this clearly!! my cousin keeps telling people the $600 is still a thing and spreading misinformation

0 coins

ok this is making me feel better about not missing anything. frustrating that there's so much wrong info out there still

0 coins

Totally understandable - the pandemic-era benefits were big news and articles about them still rank high in search results. Just always check the actual EDD website or publications dated 2024-2025 for current info.

To add some useful context: your California EDD weekly benefit amount is calculated using wages from your base period, which is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed. The minimum weekly benefit is $40 and the maximum is $450. There's no separate step to 'unlock' additional payments - what you see in your Monetary Determination letter is what you'll receive for each week you certify and are found eligible. If your payment seems lower than expected, the main things to check are: did you report any earnings or income when you certified, is your claim in adjudication status, or were there any deductions like taxes withheld? All of this should be visible on your UI Online account under payment history.

0 coins

I elected to have taxes withheld so that could be part of why it looks different than I expected. I'll check my payment history more carefully.

0 coins

good point about tax withholding, i forgot about that and was also confused about my payment amount at first

0 coins

Yeah the 10% federal tax withholding can make your net payment noticeably different from your gross weekly benefit amount. Your UI Online account should show both figures if you look at the payment detail for each week.

0 coins

lol I thought the same thing when I first filed, I was like where's my bonus money. then my sister who had filed before explained the $600 was a pandemic thing. felt silly but honestly the EDD website is confusing enough that it's an easy mistake

0 coins

haha honestly makes me feel less alone knowing other people were confused too. the whole system is just not that user friendly

0 coins

right like they could do SO much better with the UI Online interface. half the time I can't even find what I'm looking for

0 coins

Just to also mention - even though there's no $600 supplement right now, make sure you're actually receiving the full benefit amount you're entitled to. Some things that could reduce your payment or cause issues: partial week worked, reporting freelance income, or your claim being flagged for adjudication. If your UI Online shows any pending issues or a hold on your account, that needs to be addressed separately. An EDD representative can explain any holds or deductions on your specific claim if you can reach one.

0 coins

my account shows approved status so hopefully nothing weird is going on. I'll double check the payment details though

0 coins

Good advice. Sometimes there are deductions or adjustments on individual payment weeks that aren't immediately obvious in the payment history view.

0 coins

I spent like 4 days calling EDD trying to figure out my payment amount when I first filed. FOUR DAYS. Never got through. Finally tried Claimyr after seeing it mentioned somewhere and I actually got to talk to an EDD agent that same afternoon. They explained my whole benefit calculation in like 10 minutes over the phone. If you still have questions after checking your paperwork, claimyr.com is genuinely worth trying instead of the phone roulette.

0 coins

4 days is brutal. I've had similar experiences with the phone system, it's absolutely terrible

0 coins

It's designed to exhaust you I swear. Like they're hoping you'll give up. The Claimyr callback thing at least let me stop sitting there redialing

0 coins

I might try this if I still have questions after reading my determination letter more carefully. Thanks for sharing

0 coins

something nobody mentioned yet - are you maybe thinking of a different payment like the $600 from a tax refund or some other program? sometimes people mix up different government payments. just checking because i've seen people confuse edd payments with stimulus money or state rebates

0 coins

Honestly could be, I think I saw something about a California payment and assumed it was connected to unemployment. My mistake probably

0 coins

yeah totally possible. california did have some separate rebate programs (middle class tax refund etc) that are also expired now but people still search for them

0 coins

This whole thread is a good reminder that googling EDD questions will pull up stuff from 2020 constantly. I've learned to always add the current year to any EDD search so I'm getting recent information. Like 'California EDD payment schedule 2025' instead of just 'California EDD payment schedule

0 coins

genius tip honestly, gonna start doing this

0 coins

Changed my life lol. So many of my early EDD questions were answered by old info that no longer applied

0 coins

One more thing worth knowing - if federal supplemental unemployment benefits ever DO get reinstated through new legislation, California EDD will announce it prominently on their website and you'll likely hear about it through news coverage. You won't miss it. Right now in 2025 there's nothing active. The base UI benefit is all there is.

0 coins

Good to know, I'll keep an eye on the EDD website then. Thanks for clarifying

0 coins

they also send email notifications if you have your account set up for alerts, worth checking your notification preferences in UI Online

0 coins

Since you mentioned you've had trouble getting through on the phone, wanted to add that EDD also has an Ask EDD message system on their website that you can use to submit written questions. It's slower than a phone call but at least you'll get an official written response. Sometimes useful for straightforward questions like payment calculations. Just don't use it if you have an urgent adjudication issue - phone is much better for anything time-sensitive.

0 coins

Didn't know about the Ask EDD messaging, I'll try that too. Thanks!

0 coins

Ask EDD response times can vary a lot - I've had replies in 3 days and also waited 3 weeks. Phone is definitely better for anything urgent like OP said

0 coins

went through this same confusion last year, the $600 thing is just everywhere online still and it trips people up. sorry you're going through the stress of it, unemployment is already stressful enough without chasing payments that don't exist anymore. hope everything works out with your claim

0 coins

Thank you, I appreciate the support. At least now I know I'm not missing out on something I was supposed to get

0 coins

exactly, that's the silver lining. better to find out now than keep worrying about it

0 coins

If after reviewing your Monetary Determination letter you believe your weekly benefit amount is wrong or you want to dispute it, you have the right to file an appeal within 30 days of the date on that letter. The appeals process involves a hearing with an Administrative Law Judge and you can represent yourself. This is separate from just having questions about your amount - appeals are specifically for when you believe EDD made a calculation error. Just flagging this since you mentioned confusion about your payment amount, though most of the time the calculation is correct and just needs explanation.

0 coins

Good to know about the appeal option. I don't think I need to go that far, I think I was just confused about the $600 thing. But useful to know that exists

0 coins

Right, appeals are a last resort but it's good to know the option exists if you ever do have a genuine dispute with EDD about your benefit amount.

0 coins

SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME when i first filed. I kept waiting and waiting for the extra money that never came. felt like i was doing something wrong. turns out i was just reading old articles. california edd really needs to put a big banner on their website saying 'no there is no $600 anymore please stop looking for it' lol

0 coins

LMAOOO honestly this would save so many people so much stress

0 coins

Right??? Like just acknowledge that people are confused and address it directly. The FAQ on the EDD site is really not helpful

0 coins

has anyone had luck reaching EDD through their local America's Job Center? I know that's more for job search stuff but I've heard some of them have EDD staff on site or can help you get questions answered

0 coins

Some AJCC locations do have EDD presence or can at least help facilitate contact. Worth calling ahead to ask before making a trip though since it varies by location and availability.

0 coins

thanks, I'll call my local one and ask. at this point I'll try anything to get an actual question answered

0 coins

I tried that route and it was hit or miss. The Claimyr callback method at claimyr.com ended up being more reliable for me personally when I really needed to talk to an EDD agent - check out https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 for how it works

0 coins

Quick clarifying question for OP - when you say you saw the $600 mentioned, was it on the EDD website itself or somewhere else? Because if EDD's own website is showing you something about additional payments, that's a different situation than old news articles. Not trying to be paranoid but just want to make sure there isn't actually a notice on your specific account about a payment pending.

0 coins

Honestly I think it was just a random article I found on Google, not the EDD site itself. My UI Online account just shows my regular weekly amount with no mention of any supplement.

0 coins

OK yeah then you're definitely just seeing old pandemic info. If it were something specific to your account it would show in UI Online. You're good, just receiving your standard weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

update us when you get your actual payment OP! just so we know everything is processing normally for you

0 coins

Will do! I'm feeling way better after reading all these responses. Gonna check my Monetary Determination letter tonight and make sure I understand my actual benefit amount.

0 coins

good luck! and def reach out to EDD if anything looks off on that letter

0 coins

One final note: make sure you're certifying on time every two weeks to keep your payments coming. Missed certification windows can delay or interrupt your benefits. And keep your job search activities documented - California requires you to list at least three job search contacts per week when you certify, and EDD can audit these records, so keep a log. Your weekly benefit amount staying consistent depends on you staying compliant with those requirements each certification period.

0 coins

Yes I've been doing the job search log and certifying on time. Good reminder to stay on top of it though

0 coins

The job search audit thing is real - got audited once and was so glad I had kept good records. Don't skip on documenting those contacts people

0 coins

Exactly, even if it seems tedious it can really save you if EDD ever questions your eligibility for any past weeks.
