Back to California Unemployment

What must an individual do each week they receive California EDD unemployment benefits?

So I just got approved for unemployment last week and honestly I'm kind of lost about what I'm supposed to do on a regular basis to keep getting paid. My former employer (I was a project coordinator at a mid-size logistics company) let me go due to restructuring, and after jumping through all the hoops to get my claim approved I assumed the hard part was over. But now I keep hearing people mention weekly requirements and I genuinely don't know what I'm expected to do each week to keep receiving my benefits. Like do I have to apply to a certain number of jobs? Do I have to log into something every week? Is there a deadline? I've been searching online but getting conflicting info everywhere. Can someone break down exactly what an individual must do each week they receive unemployment benefits in California? I don't want to mess this up now that I finally got approved.

Great question and glad you asked before missing anything important. Here's the full breakdown of what you must do each week to keep your California EDD unemployment benefits coming: 1. CERTIFY FOR BENEFITS every two weeks (California EDD calls this your 'biweekly certification'). You do this through UI Online at myedd.edd.ca.gov or by phone via EDD Tele-Cert. You'll answer questions about whether you were able and available to work, whether you worked or earned any wages, and whether you were physically able to work. 2. COMPLETE YOUR WEEKLY JOB SEARCH. California requires you to contact at least 3 employers per week you're claiming benefits. You must keep a record of each contact including the employer name, address, contact method, position applied for, and the date of contact. EDD can audit this at any time. 3. REPORT ALL EARNINGS. If you work any hours during a week you're claiming benefits, you must report those earnings when you certify. Even part-time, gig, or freelance work counts. Failing to report is considered fraud. 4. REMAIN ABLE AND AVAILABLE FOR WORK. You can't be on vacation, out of the country, or refuse suitable work. EDD will ask you this directly during certification. 5. REGISTER WITH CalJOBS at caljobs.ca.gov if you haven't already. This is required unless you have a union hiring hall or are on approved standby status. Miss any of these and your payment can be delayed, flagged for adjudication, or denied entirely. Don't skip the job search requirement - people get tripped up on that one the most.

0 coins

This is incredibly helpful, thank you. So the certification is every two weeks but the job search is 3 contacts PER WEEK? So in a two-week certification period I need to have 6 total employer contacts logged?

0 coins

Exactly right - 3 contacts per week means 6 total in a two-week period. Keep a spreadsheet or use a notes app. EDD can request to see your job search log and if you can't produce it, they can deny your benefits retroactively.

0 coins

wait do they actually audit people?? i've been on UI for 6 weeks and never kept any records of my job applications lol

0 coins

Yes they do audit, it's not super common but it happens especially if your claim gets flagged for any reason. Start keeping records now and backfill what you remember as best you can.

0 coins

one thing that tripped me up - the certification QUESTIONS matter a lot. when it asks if you looked for work, say yes obviously, but also make sure your answers are consistent week to week. i had one week where i answered slightly differently about being available and it triggered an adjudication review that took 3 weeks to clear. just answer consistently and accurately every time

0 coins

Ugh that sounds stressful. Did you have to call EDD to resolve it or did it clear on its own?

0 coins

It cleared on its own eventually but I had no idea what was happening because EDD never sent me a clear explanation. That's the annoying part - they just put you in adjudication with zero context.

0 coins

adjudication is the WORST. i went through it twice and both times had to wait weeks with no communication from EDD at all

0 coins

When I first started getting benefits I had no idea about the CalJOBS registration requirement. I thought just doing the job search was enough but apparently you also have to have an active profile on caljobs.ca.gov. Nobody told me this directly - I only found out when my claim got flagged. If you haven't registered there yet, do it today. Takes like 20 minutes and you upload your resume. It's basically California's official job board and EDD links to it.

0 coins

I did not know this either, thank you! Is there anything specific I need to do on CalJOBS regularly or just having the profile is enough?

0 coins

Having an active profile is the main requirement. Some people update their resume periodically to show activity but I don't think there's a strict rule on that. Just make sure your profile doesn't go inactive.

0 coins

This varies a little depending on your claim type and county but yes generally you just need to have an active CalJOBS registration. The weekly job search requirement is separate.

0 coins

ok so I was in your exact position about 4 months ago and the weekly certification deadline caught me off guard. You have a certification window - usually opens on Sunday and you should complete it by Saturday night. If you miss the window you have to call EDD to request a late certification and good luck getting anyone on the phone lol. Speaking of which, if you ever need to actually talk to an EDD agent about your claim - whether it's about your weekly requirements, adjudication, or anything else - I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - basically it gets you connected to an actual EDD agent without spending all day redialing. Saved me when I missed a certification deadline and needed it fixed fast.

0 coins

Thanks for the heads up on the deadline. And I'll bookmark that Claimyr link in case I ever get stuck - hopefully I won't need it but knowing EDD phone lines are basically impossible to get through on your own is a little scary.

0 coins

can confirm Claimyr works. used it when my account got locked during a certification week and I would've lost that payment otherwise. got through to an agent same day

0 coins

i just redial like 50 times lol. is claimyr actually worth it?

0 coins

i mean it depends on how much your time is worth. spending 4 hours redialing vs actually getting through quickly - for me it was an easy choice especially when benefits were on the line

0 coins

A few things people forget about the weekly requirements that can cause problems: - If you do ANY work during a week you're certifying for, report it. Even a one-hour gig job. EDD cross-references wage data with employers and the EDD - 'Available for work' means available for full-time work unless you've been approved for something specific. Don't claim benefits for a week you took a vacation - Job search contacts need to be REAL. Don't make up employer names or positions. EDD has caught people doing this and it results in fraud notices and repayment demands - Standby status is a different situation - if your employer has you on temporary layoff with a return date within 10 weeks, you may qualify for standby and the job search requirement gets waived. Worth checking if that applies to you

0 coins

I'm not on standby, it was a permanent layoff. But good to know about the gig work reporting - I've been considering some freelance design work and wasn't sure if I had to report it.

0 coins

Yes report it. You get to earn up to 25% of your weekly benefit amount without a reduction, and beyond that it gets deducted proportionally. But you MUST report it or it's considered fraud even if the amount would have been below the threshold.

0 coins

The 25% rule - is that still accurate? I thought EDD changed how they calculate partial benefits at some point

0 coins

California EDD partial benefit calculations can be a bit complex. The basic rule is earnings are deducted from your weekly benefit amount but there's a $25 or 25% earnings disregard. For accuracy on your specific situation I'd actually recommend confirming with an EDD agent since the calculation depends on your specific WBA.

0 coins

honestly the hardest part for me was the job search documentation. like what counts as a 'contact'? I spent weeks just applying through Indeed and wasn't sure if that was enough or if I needed to do something more formal

0 coins

Online applications through platforms like Indeed, LinkedIn, or company websites absolutely count as job search contacts. You just need to log: employer name, position, contact method (online application), date, and any contact info you have. Email applications, in-person visits, and phone inquiries all count too.

0 coins

ok that's a relief. I was keeping my Indeed activity history which shows dates and positions. would that be acceptable documentation if audited?

0 coins

It would be a good supporting document but you should still maintain your own log because EDD wants specific fields filled in. Download a free job search log template - EDD actually has one on their website - and fill it out as you go.

0 coins

nobody told me about the 'able and available' requirement being so strict. I had a week where I had minor surgery - outpatient, same day recovery - and I marked that I was able and available because I figured I'd be back on my feet by the next day. EDD flagged it and sent me a notice asking me to explain. Took forever to resolve. If you have ANY health situation during a week you're claiming, be careful how you answer that question and maybe call EDD to ask first

0 coins

That's really good to know. So if I'm sick for even part of a week I should be cautious about certifying for that week?

0 coins

Basically yes. If you're physically unable to work for any part of the week, the safest thing is to not certify for that week or to mark that you were NOT able and available. You won't get paid for that week but you won't risk an adjudication issue or fraud flag either.

0 coins

This is actually important nuance. California EDD's 'able and available' standard means you were able and available for the ENTIRE week, not just most of it. If you had even one day where you couldn't have accepted a job offer, technically you may not meet the requirement.

0 coins

CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW IMPOSSIBLE IT IS TO GET ANSWERS FROM EDD WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG?? I've had three different issues with my weekly requirements over my claim period and every single time I try to call I either get the 'call volume too high' message and get disconnected OR I wait on hold forever and then it disconnects anyway. The online portal doesn't explain anything either - just shows status with no details. This system is designed to exhaust people into giving up

0 coins

THIS. I literally got hung up on after 2 hours on hold. twice.

0 coins

This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier in this thread - claimyr.com - it's made specifically for this problem. You're not going to spend hours redialing hoping to get through. Check out the demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see what it's about before trying it.

0 coins

I'm usually skeptical of these things but honestly at this point I'll try anything. My adjudication has been sitting for 5 weeks with zero communication from EDD.

0 coins

Five weeks is a long time for adjudication. Definitely try to get through to someone - either through Claimyr or by using the EDD Ask EDD portal to submit a written inquiry at least so you have a documented request on file.

0 coins

something i wish someone had told me: the certification WINDOW timing matters. California EDD benefit weeks run Sunday to Saturday. Your certification window opens the Sunday after your benefit week ends. So for a week ending Saturday, your window opens the following Sunday. You can certify anytime in that window but DO NOT wait until the very last minute. Ive seen people miss it by like an hour and then have to call EDD to reopen it.

0 coins

I didn't know it was that precise. Does missing the window mean you lose that week's payment entirely or just that you have to call to get it reopened?

0 coins

You can request a late certification within a certain period - I believe up to several weeks back - but you have to call EDD to do it. And since calling EDD is its own challenge, just don't miss the window if you can help it. Set a weekly phone reminder.

0 coins

I set a reminder for every other Sunday to certify. Never missed one since. Takes like 5 minutes once you know the questions well.

0 coins

does anyone know if you have to do job searches during weeks that are like holidays? I wasn't sure if the 3 employer contacts requirement applies during a week like thanksgiving or christmas when most employers aren't actively hiring

0 coins

Technically the job search requirement doesn't have a holiday exception built in as a standard rule. You're expected to make reasonable efforts. In practice, online applications work year-round so you can still meet the 3-contact requirement during holiday weeks by applying through company websites and job boards.

0 coins

ok that makes sense. I guess as long as I'm applying online I can meet the requirement any week of the year

0 coins

Correct, and honestly most large companies have hiring portals that are active year-round. Applying to a few positions through LinkedIn or Indeed will satisfy the requirement even during holiday weeks.

0 coins

I got confused about this for months - the biweekly certification covers TWO weeks at once, so when you're answering the questions you're actually answering for each of the two weeks separately. UI Online walks you through week 1 questions and then week 2 questions. First time I did it I thought it was just one set of questions for both weeks and answered everything the same. Make sure you answer each week accurately based on what actually happened that week

0 coins

Oh wow I did not realize it was week-by-week within the certification. I'll pay close attention to that when I do my first one.

0 coins

Yeah it's easy to breeze through and not notice the break between the two weeks. UI Online is actually decent about labeling it but you have to read carefully.

0 coins

i definitely answered both weeks the same way without thinking about it. wonder if that caused any issues on my end...

0 coins

Real talk - I was terrified of getting this wrong when I first started on UI. What helped me was joining a local job seeker workshop through my county's America's Job Center of California (AJCC). They go through all the weekly requirements and the CalJOBS registration in a group setting, answer questions, and some of them are specifically for people on unemployment. CalJOBS can actually help you find and schedule these workshops. Worth knowing about especially if you're confused about the requirements.

0 coins

I had no idea these workshops existed. Are they free? And do they count toward my job search contacts?

0 coins

Yes they're free, funded through the state. And I believe attending a workshop at an AJCC can count as one of your job search contacts for that week - ask them about it when you go.

0 coins

This is a great resource that often goes overlooked. America's Job Centers also offer resume help, interview prep, and some have computers available for job searching. Your local AJCC can be genuinely useful beyond just satisfying requirements.

0 coins

i just wanna say this thread has been more helpful than anything on EDD's actual website. their FAQ is so vague about what you actually have to DO each week. should be a pinned post honestly

0 coins

Completely agree. I've been reading the EDD website for a week trying to figure this out and didn't get half the detail I got from this thread.

0 coins

The EDD website has improved somewhat but it definitely assumes you already know the terminology. Glad this thread is helpful - that's what community forums are for.

0 coins

One more thing nobody mentioned - if you're in a union, check whether your union has a hiring hall. If you're registered with a union hiring hall and they're placing workers, you may be exempt from the independent job search requirement. Your union would need to confirm this with EDD. Doesn't apply to most people but if you're in a trade union it's worth asking about.

0 coins

I'm not in a union so this doesn't apply to me but good info for anyone who is. Thank you.

0 coins

Correct - union hiring hall exception exists in California EDD rules. You'd still need to certify for benefits and meet the able and available requirement, but the independent employer contact requirement can be waived. The union must be registered with EDD for this to apply.

0 coins

I didn't know this. I'm in a trade union and have been doing the 3 contacts every week. Gonna look into this.

0 coins

the thing that stressed me out the most when I started was not knowing if I was doing the job search LOG correctly. Like is an email enough? Do I need a confirmation number? What if the job posting gets taken down? Here's what I settled on after talking to an EDD rep: keep a simple document with date, company name, job title, how you applied, and any contact info. That's it. You don't need confirmation numbers or screenshots though having them doesn't hurt. The rep said as long as the log is detailed and consistent it satisfies the requirement.

0 coins

Did you call EDD directly to get that info? Or through some other channel?

0 coins

I actually got through to an agent - took me a while but I managed. If you ever need to reach EDD and can't get through on your own, I'd also suggest checking out Claimyr (claimyr.com) - there's a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10. I heard about it from someone else on this forum and it's a legit way to skip the hold time nightmare.

0 coins

Thank you, I'll check it out. And that job search log breakdown is exactly what I needed - simple and clear.

0 coins

The EDD agent advice on job search logs is consistent with what most people report. Simple and detailed beats elaborate and incomplete.

0 coins

not sure if this was covered but - what happens if you honestly forget to certify one week? like life gets crazy and you just miss it. is your whole claim dead?

0 coins

No, your claim isn't dead. California EDD allows you to certify retroactively for past weeks, typically up to a year back. The catch is you may need to call EDD to have the certification window reopened for those weeks. Your underlying claim stays active as long as your benefit year hasn't expired.

0 coins

ok phew. and how far back is too far back? like if i missed 3 weeks could i go back and certify for all three?

0 coins

Generally yes, within the same benefit year. You'd call EDD, explain you missed certifying for specific weeks, and they can reopen those weeks for you. Document which weeks you're requesting so you're clear with the agent. Keep in mind they may ask why you didn't certify, especially for multiple missed weeks.

0 coins

One note - if you missed weeks because you were working full time during those weeks and didn't think you'd be returning to claim, you'd need to honestly answer the certification questions for those weeks. Don't certify for weeks you were fully employed just because you now need benefits again.

0 coins

Just to add some clarity on the CalJOBS thing since there was some confusion upthread - when you register on caljobs.ca.gov, make sure you actually COMPLETE your profile including your work history and uploading a resume. A half-finished profile can sometimes get flagged the same as no profile at all. I made the mistake of creating an account, filling in my name and email, and thinking I was done. Nope - EDD was looking for a completed profile with employment history.

0 coins

How detailed does the work history need to be? Does it have to be exhaustive or just recent jobs?

0 coins

I'd say go back at least 5-10 years or whatever's relevant to your field. Same level of detail you'd put on a resume. The system will prompt you through the sections so just follow the prompts and fill everything in rather than skipping sections.

0 coins

Also make sure your contact info on CalJOBS matches what EDD has on file for you. Mismatched contact details apparently can cause issues in some cases.

0 coins

One practical tip that saved me - screenshot your certification confirmation page every single time you certify. UI Online shows a confirmation screen after you submit with a confirmation number. Screenshot or print that page. I had one case where EDD claimed they had no record of my certification for a week I KNOW I completed. Having that screenshot meant I could prove it and they resolved it quickly. Without it I would have been stuck.

0 coins

That's really smart. Does it matter what format - screenshot on my phone vs printing to PDF?

0 coins

Either works. I keep mine in a phone album labeled 'EDD' so they're easy to find. Just make sure the date, your name, and the confirmation number are all visible.

0 coins

Same here - I keep every EDD document, confirmation, and notice. It's saved me twice when there were discrepancies. Treat it like tax documents.

0 coins

wish i had done this from the start. lost a payment once because I couldn't prove I'd certified and EDD had no record of it. nightmare.
