Unexpected EDD interview notice after not filing since 2021 - need urgent contact help

Just opened my mail to find a 'Notification of Unemployment Insurance Benefit Eligibility Interview' from EDD. I'm completely confused because I haven't filed for ANY unemployment benefits since mid-2021! Why am I suddenly getting an interview notice in 2025?? The interview is supposedly scheduled for next Tuesday at 10:30am, but I have no idea what this is about or why they think I've filed a new claim. I'm worried this might be identity theft or some mistake that could mess up my taxes. Has anyone else had this happen? Is there a way to actually talk to a REAL human at EDD before this interview happens? Every time I call the main number I just get stuck in the automated system that keeps hanging up on me! Getting desperate here...

wow this happened 2 my friend last month! turned out someone filed using his info. def could be identity theft, u should try to reach them asap

Oh no! That's exactly what I'm afraid of. How did your friend finally get through to EDD? Did he have to wait for the interview?

The same EXACT thing happened to me back in November! I was FURIOUS because I hadn't filed anything since 2020, and suddenly they're scheduling me for an interview?!? Turns out someone was trying to file a fraudulent claim using my information. The PROBLEM is that the regular EDD phone line is USELESS!!! I wasted 3 DAYS trying to get through before I found a solution. Your best bet is to immediately file a fraud report through their website and flag your account.

Filing a fraud report is important, but it doesn't solve the immediate need to speak with someone before the scheduled interview. The fraud resolution can take 2-3 weeks, which is likely after the interview date. You should try to speak with a representative to get the interview postponed while the fraud investigation happens.

I tried logging in but it says my account is inactive since I haven't used it in years. When I try to reactivate it asks for verification through ID.me and I'm not sure if that's safe if someone's trying to steal my identity...

This is almost certainly either identity theft or a system error. You need to address this before the interview date. Here's what you should do: 1. Try to reach EDD immediately to clarify the situation and potentially stop a fraudulent claim 2. If you can't reach them by phone, visit an America's Job Center in person (bring ID and the notice you received) 3. Document everything, including all call attempts and copies of the notice 4. It's safe to go through ID.me to access your account - that will actually help secure your identity The most important thing is speaking with a representative before your scheduled interview date to explain you haven't filed a claim.

Thank you! I'll try calling again tomorrow morning. Do you know if there are specific hours when it's easier to get through?

I had a similar issue last year and found that using Claimyr was the only way I could actually speak to an EDD representative. It helped me bypass the usual phone system frustrations and connected me to an agent who resolved my issue. You can check out how it works at claimyr.com or see their demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km In my case, I needed to speak with someone urgently about potential identity theft, and I was able to get through in about 25 minutes instead of days of trying. The agent was able to flag my account and cancel the fraudulent claim before any payments went out.

Good idea! I'm going to do that right after I try calling EDD again.

When my brother had a similar situation happen, he went to the nearest EDD office in person with his ID and the letter. They were able to look it up immediately and confirm it was fraud. They had him fill out some paperwork right there and canceled the fake claim. Much faster than trying to deal with the phone system! Just Google your nearest EDD office and show up when they open.

Not all "EDD offices" handle UI claims anymore!!! Many are just job centers now and CAN'T help with these issues. I wasted half a day going to one only to be told they couldn't do ANYTHING. The system is BROKEN!

After you get this resolved, make sure to take these additional steps: 1. File an identity theft report with the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov 2. Place a fraud alert with all three credit bureaus 3. Review your credit reports for any other suspicious activity 4. Continue monitoring your EDD account for any further unauthorized claims 5. Consider filing Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) with the IRS to prevent tax-related issues Identity theft involving unemployment claims has been rising since 2020, and sometimes old data breaches can lead to fraud years later.

Thank you so much for this detailed advice. I was able to reach an EDD rep this morning (used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and it actually worked!). They confirmed someone tried filing a claim using my info. They've flagged my account and are sending me paperwork to officially report the fraud. I'm going to follow all your steps to protect myself further.
