Should I still certify while my EDD appeal is pending? Certification option disappeared

I got disqualified last month and filed my appeal right away (about 4 weeks ago). At first I kept certifying every two weeks like normal, but now when I log into UI Online the certification option isn't showing up anymore. Am I still supposed to certify while waiting for my appeal hearing date? And if yes, why would the system suddenly stop giving me the certification option? I'm worried that if I win my appeal but haven't been certifying, I won't get backpay for these weeks. Has anyone dealt with this during an appeal? Thanks!

Yes ur def supposed to keep certifying during appeal. Thats weird that the option is gone. Maybe call them?

Thanks! I've been trying to call but haven't gotten through yet. I'll keep trying I guess. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong.

You are absolutely supposed to continue certifying while your appeal is pending. The fact that your certification option has disappeared could indicate there's another issue with your claim. It might be that your benefit year ended, or there could be a technical glitch in the system. I recommend calling the EDD immediately to have them manually enable your certification ability. When your appeal is successful, you'll only receive backpay for weeks you've properly certified for, so this is important to resolve quickly.

Oh no, that's what I was afraid of. I've been trying to call for 3 days straight but keep getting the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and then it hangs up. Is there any other way to fix this?

The same exact thing happened to me in March! I couldn't certify while waiting on my appeal and was FREAKING OUT. Turns out there was a hold on my account because of the appeal that shouldn't have been there. After I finally got through to someone on the phone, they fixed it right away and I could certify for all the back weeks. But it took me like 2 weeks of calling over and over to reach someone. It was a nightmare!!

That's reassuring to hear you were able to certify for back weeks once it was fixed! Did you have to do anything special to get through on the phone?

Certification and appeals are different things. You need to keep certifying no matter what. If you win appeal they'll adjust your claim status for those weeks you certified during the wait.

I had this EXACT problem during my appeal last year. The certification button completely disappeared from my account. After DAYS of trying to call EDD (literally 50+ calls), I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes. The rep told me there was a technical flag on my account that was preventing certifications during appeal (which is wrong - you ARE supposed to certify during appeal). They fixed it on the spot and I was able to certify for all my back weeks. Might be worth checking out their demo video: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km or their site at claimyr.com if you're desperate to get through. Honestly saved me weeks of stress.

Thank you SO much for this suggestion! After trying to call all morning with no luck, I'm definitely desperate enough to try anything that will get me through to a real person. I'll check out that link!

EDD is SO BROKEN!!! This is exactly why people lose benefits they deserve. They make the system impossible to navigate on purpose!!! I had THREE different EDD reps tell me three completely different things about certifying during appeals. One said keep certifying, one said don't bother, and one said it depends on the type of appeal! WHICH IS IT EDD?!?! The whole department needs to be rebuilt from scratch. How can they just remove your certification button without any explanation or notification?? Absolutely maddening.

While I understand your frustration, I want to clarify that the official EDD policy is that claimants SHOULD continue certifying during appeal. This ensures that if the appeal is successful, payments can be issued for those weeks without further delay. The disappearing certification button is definitely a technical issue that needs to be addressed with an EDD representative.

Just to follow up on this thread - there's actually another reason your certification might disappear during appeal that no one mentioned yet. Sometimes if you've exhausted your benefit amount or benefit year but have an appeal pending, the system automatically stops allowing certification until the appeal decision is made. When I spoke to the EDD agent (after finally getting through), they explained this can happen in some cases, but they can still manually enable certification during this period. Just another possibility to consider.

To address your specific situation: 1. Yes, you should always continue certifying while an appeal is pending 2. The certification option disappearing usually indicates one of these issues: - A technical glitch in UI Online - An incorrect stop-certification flag on your account related to the disqualification - Your benefit year ended during this period - You've exhausted your available benefits (though this shouldn't stop certification during appeal) I recommend trying these steps in order: 1. Try the telecert phone system at 1-866-333-4606 2. Check if you can certify through the mobile EDD app instead of the website 3. Contact EDD directly to have them manually enable certification The most important thing is documenting all your attempts to certify. If you win your appeal, you'll need to show you were making good-faith efforts to certify during this period.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! My benefit year shouldn't be over yet (started claim in February 2025), and I had plenty of benefits remaining when I got disqualified. I'll try the phone system first thing tomorrow and then try to contact them directly if that doesn't work. Really appreciate all the help from everyone!

I went through something similar about 6 months ago. The certification option disappeared from my UI Online account during my appeal process too. What worked for me was using the EDD mobile app - sometimes it shows the certification option even when the website doesn't. If that doesn't work, definitely keep trying to call. I know it's frustrating, but the phone reps can manually add certification weeks to your account retroactively once they resolve the issue. Make sure to document all your attempts to certify (screenshots, call logs, etc.) in case you need to prove you were trying to follow the rules during your appeal. One tip for calling: I had better luck getting through around 8:02 AM right when they open, or sometimes late in the day around 4:30 PM. Good luck with your appeal!

Thanks for the mobile app suggestion! I hadn't thought to try that. I'll download it right now and see if the certification option shows up there. Also really appreciate the timing tips for calling - I've been trying randomly throughout the day but will focus on those specific times you mentioned. It's reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing and got it resolved!
