SDI payment set-offs affecting benefits - need advice!
Hey everyone, I'm dealing with payment set-offs affecting my SDI benefits. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm not sure how to handle it or what it means for my benefits. Any advice would be appreciated!

Ugh, payment set-offs are the worst! I dealt with this last year. Basically, it means they're taking money from your SDI to pay off other debts you might have with the state. It sucks, but it's legal. š¤

Wait, what? They can just take money from your benefits? That seems so unfair!

Yep, unfortunately they can. It's called an intercept program. Sucks big time, but that's how they do it. š¤·āāļø

Do you know if theres a way to appeal this? Or atleast reduce the amount they take?

You can try to negotiate with the agency you owe money to. Sometimes they'll work with you on a payment plan that's less harsh. Worth a shot!

I found a method to get someone on the phone about this. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/Ize0EkN4HDI

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? $20 seems steep.

I was skeptical too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth it IMO.

How long did you have to wait for the callback?

It took about 2 hours for me, but beats sitting on hold all day. They text you when they're about to connect you.

Payment set-offs are a pain in the a$$. Here's what you need to know: ā¢ Set-offs happen when you owe money to a state or federal agency ā¢ They can take up to 25% of your SDI benefits ā¢ Common reasons: unpaid taxes, child support, or student loans ā¢ You should receive a notice before it happens ā¢ You can request a review if you think it's an error Best bet is to call SDI and ask for details. Good luck!

Have you checked your EDD account online? Sometimes there's more info there about why you're getting a set-off. Might save you a phone call.

Good idea, I'll take a look. Hopefully there's some explanation there.

I'm in the same boat, OP. Been dealing with this for months. It's like trying to nail jello to a wall getting straight answers from EDD. Hang in there!
