How to register with CalJOBS works for California EDD unemployment requirements

I've been collecting unemployment for about three weeks now and just got a notice from California EDD saying I need to register with the state's job search system as part of my eligibility requirements. Honestly I had no idea this was even a thing when I first filed my claim. The letter mentions something about registering with the America's Job Center and using CalJOBS but the instructions are super vague. I went to the CalJOBS website and started creating an account but got confused halfway through - it's asking for all this information about my work history and skills and I'm not sure how detailed I need to be or if I just need to create a basic profile to satisfy the California EDD requirement. Has anyone else had to do this recently? Do I need to fully complete the entire CalJOBS profile or is just registering enough? And does California EDD automatically get notified when I register or do I need to report it somewhere on my weekly claim certification?

Yes this is a standard requirement for most unemployment claimants in California. When you register with CalJOBS you need to create a job seeker account and upload a resume - even a basic one counts. California EDD does get the data feed from CalJOBS automatically so you don't need to manually report it anywhere on your weekly certification. That said I'd recommend completing at least 80% of your profile just to be safe because a partially completed profile has caused adjudication issues for some people I know.

0 coins

Oh thank goodness they get it automatically! I was worried I'd have to call EDD to confirm and we all know how that goes lol. So any resume works, even if it's pretty basic?

0 coins

agreed the resume requirement trips a lot of people up but yeah even a one page resume satisfies it

0 coins

Wait I thought you only had to register with CalJOBS if EDD specifically told you to? Like not everyone has to do it?

0 coins

I went through this exact confusion back in January. The CalJOBS registration for unemployment purposes is different from fully using the job search platform. For EDD compliance you specifically need to: 1) create a job seeker account at caljobs.ca.gov, 2) complete your contact information and work history sections, 3) upload or create a resume in the system. Once those three things are done you're technically registered and EDD considers the requirement met. The extra stuff like applying through CalJOBS or attending workshops is separate from the basic registration requirement.

0 coins

This breakdown is really helpful thank you. So I don't need to actively apply for jobs through CalJOBS itself to satisfy the EDD requirement, right? I'm already doing my job searches independently.

0 coins

this is correct. caljobs registration and actively using caljobs are two different things. edd just wants to see you're in the system

0 coins

I messed this up initially and my claim got flagged. Make sure the resume you upload actually has your name and contact info on it, mine got rejected because I uploaded a generic template I forgot to fill out completely lmao

0 coins

Heads up - when I was dealing with CalJOBS registration issues my claim actually got put into adjudication because EDD couldn't verify my registration for like two weeks. I tried calling EDD to sort it out and spent literal days getting nowhere, constant busy signals and disconnects. Someone on another thread recommended Claimyr (claimyr.com) and I was skeptical but I tried it and actually got connected to a live EDD agent within a couple hours. They confirmed my CalJOBS registration had gone through fine and cleared the adjudication flag. There's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see before trying it. Genuinely saved me a lot of stress.

0 coins

Adjudication just from a CalJOBS registration issue?? That's terrifying. Good to know Claimyr exists in case something like that happens to me.

0 coins

ugh adjudication over something so minor is so frustrating. the EDD phone system is absolutely broken

0 coins

I've heard of Claimyr too, my coworker used it when her claim got stuck and said it worked well for getting through to an actual person at EDD

0 coins

ok so real question - does EVERYONE have to register with CalJOBS or just certain claimants?? I've been on unemployment for 6 weeks and never got any notice about this and I'm suddenly freaking out that I've been out of compliance this whole time

0 coins

Not everyone gets the requirement at the same time. It depends on your claim type and how EDD processes your file. Some people get the notice right away, some get it weeks in, some are placed on standby status which exempts them. Check your UI Online account for any pending issues or notices.

0 coins

ok I just checked and there's nothing flagged on my account so I think I'm ok? but now I'm paranoid

0 coins

Same situation here, been claiming for two months with no CalJOBS notice. I think if EDD needed it from you they would have flagged it by now. Don't manufacture problems lol

0 coins

the CalJOBS website is genuinely one of the worst designed government websites I have ever used in my life. I spent 45 minutes just trying to figure out how to upload a resume. It kept timing out and logging me out mid-process. Finally figured out you have to use a PDF under 2MB or it just silently fails without giving you an error message. California has enough money to fix this!!

0 coins

Oh that's a really useful tip about the PDF size! I was going to upload a Word doc. Does it accept .docx files at all?

0 coins

it claims to accept docx but in my experience PDF is way more reliable. just convert it first

0 coins

the timeout issue is real. I recommend doing the registration in one sitting with all your info ready to go rather than trying to save and come back to it

0 coins

I want to clarify something from earlier in this thread - the CalJOBS registration requirement does apply to most regular UI claimants but there are exemptions. If your employer has indicated you're on temporary layoff and will be recalled within a specific timeframe, you can request standby status which waives the active job search and CalJOBS registration requirements. You'd need to have your employer confirm the recall date. This is worth knowing if your situation fits.

0 coins

I was actually laid off permanently so standby doesn't apply to me, but this is good info for anyone reading who might be in that situation

0 coins

wait so if you're on standby you don't have to do the job search stuff at all?? how do you apply for standby status?

0 coins

You apply through UI Online under the claim management section. Your employer typically needs to provide a return-to-work date within 60 days. EDD reviews and approves or denies it. It's not automatic.

0 coins

standby status was a lifesaver for me when my company did a temporary shutdown. highly recommend if you qualify

0 coins

went through caljobs registration last month and honestly it wasn't as bad as I expected once I knew what I was doing. the key things: use chrome or firefox not safari (safari had display bugs for me), have your most recent job info ready including dates and employer address, and create your resume directly in CalJOBS using their resume builder rather than uploading a file. the builder is clunky but it definitely registers in their system correctly

0 coins

The browser tip is SO helpful, I was using Safari and having weird issues. Switching to Chrome now

0 coins

chrome worked way better for me too. safari on the edd and caljobs sites is always a disaster

0 coins

Using the built-in resume builder is actually good advice from an EDD compliance standpoint. The system definitively marks your profile as having a resume when you use the builder, whereas uploaded files sometimes don't trigger that flag properly in older versions of the interface.

CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW EDD SENDS THESE NOTICES WITH LIKE ZERO ACTUAL INSTRUCTIONS?? the letter I got just said 'register with America's Job Center of California' with no link, no website address, no explanation of what that even means. I had to google what AJCC even is and figure out it connects to CalJOBS myself. For something that can get your benefits stopped you'd think they could include a URL at minimum!!

0 coins

lmaooo the EDD notices are written by people who have clearly never had to actually use the system they're describing

0 coins

100% agree. I called EDD just to get clarification on a similar notice and even the agent I spoke with gave me confusing information about whether CalJOBS and AJCC registration are the same thing or different things. (They are the same thing btw, AJCC is just the umbrella term for the physical job centers and CalJOBS is the online portal

0 coins

This is exactly my experience too! The notice I got mentioned AJCC and I had no idea that meant I needed to go to caljobs.ca.gov. Very frustrating communication from EDD.

0 coins

just want to add - after you register with CalJOBS make sure you keep a record of when you completed the registration. screenshot the confirmation page or write down the date. if EDD ever questions your compliance you want to be able to show exactly when you registered. I learned this the hard way when EDD claimed my registration was late and I had no way to prove otherwise

0 coins

Smart advice! Taking a screenshot right now as I'm going through the process

0 coins

Great point. Also screenshot or print your CalJOBS profile page showing your resume is listed as active. That's the specific thing EDD checks.

0 coins

does the caljobs system send you any confirmation email? or just the on-screen confirmation?

0 coins

Adding some clarity on the job search requirements since it seems related to what people are asking: California EDD requires you to make three job search contacts per week while certifying for benefits (unless you're on standby or have an approved waiver). Your CalJOBS registration is separate from these weekly job search activities. You need BOTH - to be registered in CalJOBS AND to be actively conducting and logging your job searches. The job search contacts can be through any method (indeed, linkedin, direct employer contact, etc.) and you report them when you certify each week.

0 coins

wait is it 3 contacts per week now?? I thought it was 1 per week. oh god

0 coins

Yes, the current requirement is 3 job search activities per week for most claimants. This was updated after the pandemic-era suspensions ended. Check your Notice of Unemployment Insurance Award letter, it should specify your requirement.

0 coins

I've definitely not been logging 3 contacts per week. my whole claim might be screwed

0 coins

If you haven't been meeting job search requirements you should contact EDD to understand your options. In some cases if you had a good faith misunderstanding of the requirement there's a process to address it, but you want to handle it proactively rather than wait for EDD to discover it.

0 coins

I just completed my CalJOBS registration this week and I have a tip - when it asks about your desired job and wage at the end of the profile setup, don't skip it even though it seems optional. I've seen people report that skipping those fields left their profile showing as 'incomplete' in EDD's system even though they thought they were done

0 coins

Oh I definitely would have skipped those since they seemed optional! Filling them in now

0 coins

good tip. I also made sure to put in realistic wage expectations rather than leaving it blank. not sure if that matters for edd compliance but figured it couldn't hurt

0 coins

For anyone who ends up with adjudication issues related to CalJOBS registration or any other compliance question, seriously consider using Claimyr to reach EDD. I mentioned it earlier but want to reiterate - the standard EDD phone lines are basically impossible right now, I was trying for 3 days straight before I found claimyr.com. The process is straightforward and you end up actually talking to an EDD agent who can see your claim and resolve issues in real time. Check out the demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 to see how it works before you decide.

0 coins

I'm going to try this because I've genuinely given up on ever getting through to EDD through normal channels

0 coins

how long does it take to actually get connected once you use claimyr?

0 coins

In my experience it was about 2 hours but I've seen people say anywhere from 1-4 hours depending on call volume. Still way better than never getting through at all.

0 coins

random but slightly relevant - if you're also supposed to go to an in-person AJCC orientation as part of your EDD requirements that is a separate thing from CalJOBS online registration. some claimants get called in for an in-person appointment at an America's Job Center location. if that happens you'll get a notice with a specific date. missing that appointment is much more serious than a delayed CalJOBS registration so watch your mail carefully

0 coins

I didn't know there could be an in-person component to this! So far I've only gotten the notice about CalJOBS online registration. Hopefully it stays that way.

0 coins

The in-person orientation is called a Re-Employment Services and Eligibility Assessment (RESEA) appointment. Not everyone gets one, it's somewhat random but tends to target people who've been claiming for several weeks. If you get a notice you absolutely must attend or contact EDD immediately to reschedule.

0 coins

wait I got a letter about RESEA a while back and I thought it was optional... is it not optional??

0 coins

It is NOT optional. RESEA is mandatory and missing it without rescheduling can result in disqualification from benefits. You need to call EDD or the number on that letter ASAP if you haven't responded yet.

0 coins

this thread is making me realize how many ways there are to accidentally mess up your unemployment claim without realizing it. like between the job search requirements, CalJOBS registration, possible RESEA appointments, weekly certifications... it's basically a part time job staying compliant

0 coins

It really is. And EDD provides almost no proactive guidance, you have to figure most of this out yourself or from forums like this one

0 coins

100% agree, this forum has been more helpful than anything EDD has communicated to me directly

0 coins

One more thing about CalJOBS registration for EDD purposes - after you complete registration go back and check your profile after 24-48 hours to make sure everything saved correctly. I've seen cases where the system appeared to confirm registration but certain sections didn't actually save due to technical glitches. If your profile shows as incomplete when you log back in, you need to re-complete those sections before EDD pulls your data.

0 coins

this is good advice. the site glitches constantly. I log back in every couple days just to confirm my stuff is still there

0 coins

I'll definitely do a follow-up check. Thanks for the tip!

0 coins

Does anyone know if you have to keep your CalJOBS profile updated throughout your claim or just register once? Like if my job history changes because I did some gig work do I need to update it?

0 coins

For EDD compliance purposes, the initial registration is the main requirement. However if you do gig or part-time work you need to report those earnings on your weekly certification regardless of CalJOBS. The CalJOBS profile is more about your job seeker status, not tracking your earnings.

0 coins

That said, keeping CalJOBS updated is generally good practice especially if you do want to use it as an actual job search tool. But from a pure EDD compliance standpoint the initial complete registration is what triggers the requirement being met.

0 coins

ok that's a relief, I was worried I'd have to update it constantly

0 coins

Quick update for OP - I just checked and CalJOBS updated their interface sometime in the last few months. The resume upload section is now under 'My Resume/CV' in the left sidebar rather than on the main profile page where it used to be. Took me forever to find it again when I went to update mine.

0 coins

Thank you!! I was looking all over for where to upload the resume and couldn't find it. Going to check the sidebar now

0 coins

they keep moving things around on that site and it's infuriating

0 coins

For people worried about being out of compliance with any EDD requirement - whether it's CalJOBS registration, job search contacts, or anything else - the best approach is always to contact EDD directly before they contact you. Self-reporting a compliance issue proactively is treated very differently than being flagged for it. If you genuinely couldn't get through on the phone, using a service like Claimyr (claimyr.com) to reach an agent can make a real difference. An agent can note your account with your good faith effort to comply and sometimes that's enough to prevent a formal adjudication. The video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 shows how the service works if you want to check it out.

0 coins

this is really reassuring to hear about the proactive reporting thing. going to try to reach EDD this week about my job search issue

0 coins

does proactive reporting actually work? I feel like EDD doesn't care and disqualifies people regardless

0 coins

It genuinely does make a difference in my experience and from what I've read. EDD has formal discretion in how they handle good faith compliance failures vs. willful non-compliance. It doesn't guarantee anything but it's significantly better than waiting.

0 coins

Agreed, I self-reported a job search issue once and the agent noted my account and it never turned into an adjudication. Proactive communication with EDD is always the right move even when it's hard to get through to them.

0 coins

UPDATE: I completed my CalJOBS registration! Used Chrome like someone suggested, had my info ready to go, used the built-in resume builder instead of uploading, and filled in all the fields even the optional-looking ones. Took about 40 minutes total. My profile is showing as active and complete. I screenshotted everything. Thank you SO much to everyone in this thread - I would have been completely lost without all this specific advice. This forum genuinely explains EDD stuff better than EDD does!

0 coins

Great news! Make sure to check back in 48 hours to confirm everything still shows correctly in the system. Good luck with your claim!

0 coins

congrats! the system is terrible but you got through it

0 coins

Glad it worked out. And now you know about Claimyr if you ever hit a snag that requires actually talking to someone at EDD!

0 coins

Yay! Glad this thread was helpful. The CalJOBS registration really isn't explained well by EDD anywhere so threads like this are honestly essential.
