How to get proof of unemployment online from California EDD
So I've been trying to figure out how to get proof of unemployment online through California EDD and it's been way more confusing than I expected. I need a benefits verification letter for my landlord because I'm applying for a rent assistance program and they want official documentation showing I'm currently receiving UI benefits. I've been on the myEDD portal for like an hour clicking around and can't find where to actually generate or download any kind of official letter or statement. I found my payment history but that doesn't seem like it would count as official proof. Does anyone know exactly where in the portal this is or if there's another way to get documentation? I'm on a deadline and really can't afford to wait weeks for something to come in the mail if there's an online option.

You can get proof of unemployment online directly through your myEDD account. Once you log in, go to UI Online and look for the option that says 'Benefit Verification Letter' - it's usually under the 'More' or 'Documents' section depending on how your dashboard is laid out. The letter is generated instantly as a PDF and shows your benefit year dates, weekly benefit amount, and current claim status. That should be everything your landlord needs to verify your UI benefits.

AuthorOh wow I completely missed that section. I was looking under 'Claim Summary' the whole time. Let me check the Documents tab right now.

Yes this is correct! I did this last month for a housing application. The PDF downloads immediately and has the California EDD letterhead so it looks totally official.

just to add - make sure you're logged into UI Online specifically and not just the myEDD homepage, the documents section only shows up once you're inside the UI Online portal

i spent like 3 days trying to figure this out omg. nobody tells you where anything is on that site. i ended up calling california edd to ask and they just told me to look online but couldn't tell me exactly where lol

AuthorThat is SO frustrating. Did you ever find it?

Since this thread is about contacting California EDD - if anyone is struggling to actually get someone on the phone to help navigate the portal or explain their claim status, I used a service called Claimyr recently that got me connected to an actual EDD agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. Website is claimyr.com and there's a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - honestly wish I'd found it sooner because the hold times on my own were unbearable.

I've heard of this! My coworker used it when her adjudication got stuck for weeks and said it was the only way she could actually talk to someone.

does it actually work? i've been trying to reach edd for two weeks straight about a different issue and can't get through

It worked for me, got connected to a real agent who could actually pull up my account. Way better than the automated system just hanging up on me every time.

To answer the original question more completely - there are actually a few different documents you might be able to get depending on what proof of unemployment your landlord or program specifically needs: 1. Benefit Verification Letter - downloadable from UI Online, shows current claim status and benefit amounts 2. Payment History - also in UI Online under your claim details, shows actual payments issued 3. 1099-G Form - available in myEDD for tax purposes, shows total benefits paid in a calendar year For rent assistance programs, the Benefit Verification Letter is usually what they want because it shows active status. The payment history works as supplemental proof. If they specifically need a 1099-G that's under the tax documents section of myEDD.

AuthorThis is super helpful, I'll try the Benefit Verification Letter first and have the payment history as backup. Thank you!

didn't know about the 1099-G being online, i've been waiting for mine in the mail. going to check right now

Lucas Bey
Good breakdown. One thing to note is the 1099-G for the current year won't be available until January of the following year, so if you need proof of current benefits the Benefit Verification Letter is definitely the right one to use.

Also worth mentioning - if you need proof specifically that you filed a claim but aren't sure if it's active yet, the claim confirmation number from your original filing shows up in your UI Online account history too

SAME PROBLEM. Been trying to get documentation for my son's school financial aid form for weeks. The school keeps rejecting my payment history printout and saying they need 'official California EDD correspondence' which apparently my portal screenshots don't count as. This system is so unnecessarily complicated for something that should take 5 minutes.

Alexis Renard
For school financial aid specifically they typically need the official Benefit Verification Letter with the EDD letterhead. A portal screenshot won't have the necessary formatting they're looking for. The letter download from UI Online should satisfy their requirements - it's a formal document not just a screen grab.

Tyler Lefleur
Ugh ok I'll try the letter. I just assumed if I could show them my payment amounts that would be enough but I guess they need the whole formatted document.

I had this exact issue with a financial aid office. They accepted the Benefit Verification Letter no problem once I downloaded the actual PDF. Good luck!

Quick tip I learned - if you need to get proof of unemployment online quickly and your myEDD account is having login issues or locked, don't waste time trying to reset through the portal over and over. Call EDD directly and they can sometimes mail an expedited verification letter if you explain the deadline situation. Though honestly getting through on the phone is its own nightmare...

the phone situation is genuinely the worst. I called 47 times in one day once and never got through

47 times!! that's honestly impressive dedication and also deeply depressing that it came to that

I gave up calling on my own and used Claimyr to get through - claimyr.com - they basically navigate the hold system and connect you to an actual agent. Saved me so much frustration when I needed to sort out a claim issue urgently.

wait so this is only available if you have an active claim right? what if your claim ended but you need proof of the benefits you received like 6 months ago for a program application? does the myEDD portal still have that documentation accessible?
0 coins
Lucas Bey
Yes, your claim history stays accessible in myEDD even after a benefit year ends. You can still download your payment history and access your 1099-G for past years. The Benefit Verification Letter might show as 'claim ended' status which some programs actually want to see anyway to verify the period you were on unemployment.
0 coins
Emma Swift
Oh thank goodness. I was worried everything would just disappear after the claim closed. I need documentation going back about 8 months.
0 coins
Alexis Renard
Definitely still accessible. myEDD stores records for multiple years. Just log in and navigate to your closed claim and all the documentation should still be there.

I had a really frustrating experience with this where I downloaded the Benefit Verification Letter and my housing coordinator rejected it saying it was too old even though it was the same day. Turns out they needed me to download a fresh one on a specific date they designated. Had no idea you could just re-download it whenever with the current date on it - nobody told me that was even an option.
0 coins
Charlotte Jones
AuthorOh this is good to know! So every time you download it, it generates with the current date?
0 coins
Madeline Blaze
Exactly. So if a program needs documentation dated within a certain window, you just wait until that window opens and download it then. Fresh letter every time.

Harper Thompson
That's actually really useful info. I didn't realize it wasn't static, thought there was one document and that was it.

does anyone know if you can get proof of unemployment for someone else? like my elderly mom applied but she doesn't really do computers and I help manage her stuff. can I log in to her myEDD account and download her documents or is that a privacy violation
0 coins
Alexis Renard
California EDD does have an authorized representative process where you can officially be designated to manage someone's account. For immediate family helping elderly relatives navigate the system, you can log in with their credentials to access documents, though technically EDD prefers you set up proper authorization. If she needs an official representative on file, EDD can walk you through the process - though as others have mentioned, getting through on the phone to set that up can be challenging.
0 coins
Isabella Tucker
OK good to know there's a real process for this. She's been getting benefits but has no idea how to access any of her documents online. Might need to call them to get this sorted.

Ella Lewis
If you need to call EDD to set up that authorization, Claimyr (claimyr.com) helped me get through to an agent way faster than the regular phone line - there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 if you want to see how it works before trying it. Getting through to explain a complex situation like authorized representative setup really does need a live agent.

one thing nobody mentioned - if you're trying to get proof of unemployment online and your account shows no claims or the wrong information, that's a totally different problem and you probably need to call EDD to fix account errors before any documentation will be accurate anyway

Jade O'Malley
this happened to me actually. My UI Online was showing a different claim than the one i thought was active. turned out there was some weird duplicate account issue that had to be fixed by phone.

yeah the portal isn't perfect and sometimes has data display issues. always good to verify what you're downloading actually matches what you expect before submitting it somewhere important

AuthorGood point - I'll double check the amounts on the letter match my actual weekly benefit amount before I send it to my landlord

also just want to add for anyone searching - the Benefit Verification Letter through UI Online is completely free to download. I was worried there might be some fee for getting official documentation but nope, totally free, just log in and download. Took me less than 2 minutes once I found the right section.

Came here to say the same thing. Was expecting some bureaucratic hoop to jump through but it really is that straightforward once you find it.

I know this is slightly off topic but can anyone help me understand the difference between the Benefit Verification Letter and the Award Letter? I got an Award Letter when I first filed months ago but I'm not sure if that counts as proof of current unemployment for assistance programs or if I need the newer verification letter
0 coins
Alexis Renard
The Award Letter you received when your claim was approved shows your benefit year start date and weekly benefit amount but it's a one-time document from when EDD set up your claim. The Benefit Verification Letter you can download from UI Online now is current and shows your claim status as of the download date. For any program requiring proof of active unemployment status, the current Benefit Verification Letter is what you need - the Award Letter just shows you were approved, not that you're still actively claiming.
0 coins
Andrew Pinnock
Ohhhh ok that makes total sense. I've been holding onto my Award Letter thinking it was the proof document I'd need. Going to download the actual Benefit Verification Letter right now.
0 coins
Lucas Bey
Good clarification. This confuses a lot of people. The Award Letter is historical, the Benefit Verification Letter is current status.

Random but helpful tip: when you download your Benefit Verification Letter, immediately save a copy somewhere other than just your downloads folder. I've had to provide this to three different programs and being able to just send the saved copy instead of logging back in each time has been convenient (though obviously re-download if the program needs a very current date on it).

Madeline Blaze
Smart. Also email it to yourself so you have it in your email history easily searchable.

Harper Thompson
Yes exactly! Having it in email is a lifesaver, especially if you end up applying to multiple programs that all need the same documentation.

I've been searching for how to get proof of unemployment online for literally three weeks because every time I found instructions they were outdated and the portal looked different. The screenshots in old guides don't match what the current myEDD portal looks like at all. California EDD really needs better documentation for their own documentation lol

Tyler Lefleur
This is SO real. Every guide I found was from like 2021 and the interface has completely changed. I couldn't match anything I was reading to what was on my screen.

The portal redesign did make a lot of old tutorials useless. Current layout has Documents under a different menu path than most older guides describe. Hopefully this thread helps people find it more easily since it's current.

Update for OP and anyone else finding this thread: I needed to get proof of unemployment online for a utility assistance program last week. Successfully found and downloaded the Benefit Verification Letter from UI Online. Program accepted it no problem. The key navigation path on the current portal is: log into myEDD → click into UI Online → look for 'More' in the top navigation → Documents → Benefit Programs. Took about 90 seconds once I knew where to look.

Charlotte Jones
AuthorThank you for posting this update! I found mine using similar navigation and my landlord accepted it. Such a relief.

Can you get the benefit verification letter if your claim is in adjudication? Or does it only work for approved active claims? Asking because mine has been in adjudication for almost 5 weeks and I desperately need some kind of documentation showing I at least have a pending claim for a hardship program I'm applying to.
0 coins
Alexis Renard
When a claim is in adjudication, the portal may show limited documentation options since benefits technically haven't been approved yet. Some programs will accept documentation showing a pending claim - you might be able to access a claim acknowledgment or filing confirmation from your UI Online account history. If the hardship program needs more specific documentation of pending status, you'd likely need to call EDD directly to request a letter explaining your claim is under review. That's a situation where speaking with an actual agent matters a lot.

Jayden Hill
Great that's what I was afraid of. I've been trying to call about my adjudication anyway for weeks with zero luck getting through. Might just go in person to a local office at this point.

Hunter Edmunds
If you're struggling to reach someone about your adjudication situation - that's exactly the kind of thing Claimyr helped me with. Check out claimyr.com or the demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10 - when your claim is stuck in adjudication for that long you really need to talk to a live agent and waiting on hold for hours just to get disconnected is maddening. It might be worth trying before making the trek to an office.

I will definitely try this, thank you. 5 weeks in adjudication with bills piling up and no way to talk to anyone has been genuinely awful.

Just want to say this thread is incredibly helpful. I'm a case manager at a nonprofit and we help clients navigate public benefits applications constantly. We send people looking for how to get proof of unemployment online to resources like this because the official EDD guides are really hard for people to follow. The Benefit Verification Letter through UI Online is what we recommend for virtually all documentation needs.
0 coins
Ella Lewis
That's really good to know from a professional perspective. Validating that the benefit verification letter is the standard document for most purposes.
0 coins
LordCommander
Yes, in probably 90% of cases that's what programs need. The main exception is tax-related documentation where you'd need the 1099-G instead.

It's great that nonprofits are helping people navigate this stuff. The learning curve on EDD documentation requirements is real.

slight correction to some things in this thread - the menu path in myEDD does vary depending on whether you're on mobile vs desktop. On mobile the navigation is collapsed and the Documents section can be harder to find. If youre having trouble finding it try switching to desktop view on your phone or logging in from an actual computer

Max Knight
OH. This explains so much. I've been trying to do everything on my phone and wondering why my screen looked different from every description I read.

Lucy Lam
Yeah the mobile experience is not great for EDD stuff honestly. Desktop is much easier for finding documents and navigating the portal.
