How long for EDD appeal hearing in CA after quitting job? 4 months and still waiting!

I quit my retail management position in April 2025 (toxic workplace, was having panic attacks). Filed for unemployment right away, but EDD sent me a disqualification notice in May saying I quit without good cause. I immediately filed an appeal online and got confirmation they received it May 12th. It's now mid-September and I STILL haven't received any court date for my hearing! The appeal confirmation letter said 6-8 weeks, but it's been over 16 weeks now. Called EDD twice but all they say is "it's in process" and "be patient" - not helpful when my savings are almost gone! Has anyone gone through the appeal process recently? How long did your appeal hearing take to get scheduled after quitting? Is 4+ months normal or should I be doing something else to speed this up?

i waited 5 months for my appeal hearing after i was denied for misconduct. this was back in march. the wait is totally normal (but sucks). they are SO backlogged right now with appeals cuz of all the overpayment stuff happening. just keep checking ur mail everyday, they'll eventually send u a notice with ur hearing date like 2-3 weeks before it happens. mine was over the phone btw.

5 MONTHS??? Ugh, that's depressing but thank you for letting me know. Did you win your appeal? I'm worried my case isn't strong enough since I technically did quit, but I have medical documentation about the anxiety/panic attacks the job was causing.

The appeal process timeline varies, but 4+ months isn't unusual in California right now. The Office of Appeals has a significant backlog. Here's what you should know: 1. Make sure your current mailing address is updated with EDD and the Appeals Board 2. Prepare your case while waiting - gather medical documentation, witness statements, any communications about workplace conditions 3. You can check your appeal status by calling the Appeals Board directly at (800) 300-5616 (separate from regular EDD) 4. For voluntary quits, you'll need to demonstrate "good cause" - medical documentation of anxiety/panic attacks can qualify if you can show the workplace directly contributed to your condition Be ready for your hearing notice to arrive with short notice - often just 10-14 days before the scheduled date.

Thank you SO much for this helpful info! I didn't know I could call the Appeals Board directly - I've only been talking to regular EDD reps. I'll try that number tomorrow. I do have doctor's notes and emails to HR documenting the issues before I quit, so I've been organizing those. Really appreciate your advice!

I went through this nightmare back in July and FINALLY got my hearing. The whole process from appeal to actual hearing took exactly 18 weeks. What worked for me was using Claimyr to connect with an actual EDD representative who could see more details about my appeal status. Regular phone calls just got me nowhere but automated messages or basic reps. If you check out their video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km you can see how it works. The rep I spoke to through them was able to flag my case as urgent since it had been so delayed, and I got my hearing date letter two weeks later. Their website is claimyr.com if you're interested - saved me weeks more of waiting.

Yes, it definitely worked for me. The difference is you get connected to tier 2 specialists who can actually see and do something about your case. Regular EDD phone reps just read scripts and can't really help with appeals in my experience.

HAHAHA welcome to EDD HELL! My appeal took SIX MONTHS last year and when I finally got the hearing date they sent it to my old address even though I updated my address FOUR TIMES with them! Almost missed my hearing entirely! The whole system is designed to make you give up!!!! Document EVERYTHING and call them EVERY WEEK to check status because they "lose" things all the time. The judges are actually pretty fair though once you finally get to the hearing.

Oh no, that's terrifying about them sending it to the wrong address! I'll definitely keep calling weekly to check status. Did you win your appeal at least after all that waiting?

My EDD appeal for voluntary quit took about 12 weeks from filing to hearing date, and that was considered fast according to my lawyer. Since yours involves medical issues (anxiety/panic attacks), they might assign it to a judge who specializes in medical cases, which could take longer due to fewer qualified judges. One thing that might help - make sure your appeal is properly coded in their system. Sometimes appeals get miscategorized which pushes them into slower processing queues. When you call, specifically ask if your appeal is coded as a medical/health-related voluntary quit case (VQ-MED designation). If it's just coded as a standard voluntary quit, request they review the coding based on your submitted documentation.

Thank you for this insight! I had no idea there were different codes for different types of appeals. I'll definitely ask about that when I call tomorrow. Did you use a lawyer for your appeal hearing? I'm wondering if I should get one.

I did use a lawyer because my case was complicated (involved harassment claims). For a medical-based quit, it's not always necessary if your documentation is strong. The judges are used to people representing themselves. If you do want legal help, check if you qualify for free assistance from Legal Aid in your county - they often have EDD specialists.

just so u know, my roomate had an appeal last month and he was able to do it over the phone instead of going to court in person. he said it was way less scary than he thought it would be, the judge was super nice. he did have to wait like 20 weeks for the hearing date tho. he quit his job too cuz the boss was making him work 60 hours but only paid him for 40. he ended up winning!

That's reassuring to hear about the phone hearing being less intimidating! And congrats to your roommate - that's wage theft what his boss was doing. Good for him for winning his case!

my neibors appeal took 3 months and my cousins took 7 so theres no real way to know. they say its based on how complicated ur case is but i think its just random tbh

i think it also depends on which office handles ur case. my friend in san diego got his hearing way faster than ppl in LA

Just want to add one important tip: while you're waiting for your appeal hearing, you must continue to certify for benefits every two weeks even though you won't receive payments until (and if) you win your appeal. If you stop certifying, you could lose eligibility for those weeks permanently even if you win your appeal later. Many people don't realize this and it causes them to lose potential back payments.

Thank you for this reminder! I have been certifying every two weeks even though it feels pointless right now. Glad to know I'm doing the right thing.

btw when u finally get ur hearing dont stress too much. just be super honest bout why u quit. like explain the panic attacks and how they were caused by the job. dont try to make stuff up or exaggerate cuz the judges can tell. they hear these cases all day everyday. just be real and bring ur docs.

Thanks for the advice! I'm definitely planning to just be straightforward about everything. I've got emails to HR about the situation before I quit and notes from my doctor, so hopefully that's enough documentation.
