EDD work search requirements while partially employed - do I mark 'yes' when certifying?

I'm working part-time at a warehouse (24 hours/week) but qualified for partial unemployment benefits. This Sunday will be my first time certifying and I'm confused about the work search question. Since I already have a job, just with reduced hours, do I still need to answer 'YES' to looking for work? Or is 'NO' the right answer since I'm technically employed? I don't want my claim to get flagged for answering wrong. My employer said they'll hopefully restore my hours in a couple months, so I'm not actively hunting for a different job. Anyone deal with partial unemployment certification before?

When you're on partial unemployment, you should answer 'YES' to the work search question. EDD requires all claimants to be looking for work, even those partially employed. The reasoning is that you need to be seeking full-time employment or additional part-time work to supplement your reduced hours. Just certify your current earnings accurately each period and continue marking 'YES' for work search. You don't need to apply to tons of jobs, but you should be making some effort to find additional work while receiving benefits.

Thanks for the clear explanation! So I should keep track of any work search activities I do, right? Does looking at job postings online count, or do I need to actually apply to positions? My supervisor said we'll probably go back to full-time in 6-8 weeks, so I'm not sure if I should be actively applying elsewhere.

This is incorrect advice. EDD requires ALL unemployment claimants to fulfill work search requirements, including those who are partially employed. The only exceptions are if you have a definite return date within a short timeframe (usually under 4 weeks) or if you've been specifically exempted by EDD. Please don't mark NO unless you've been explicitly told you're exempt by EDD.

I work for an employer that regularly reduces hours seasonally, so I've dealt with partial unemployment multiple times. Here's what you need to know: 1. Always answer YES to the work search question unless EDD has specifically told you that you're exempt 2. Document ANY job search activities - this includes checking job boards, talking to other employers, asking about additional shifts, etc. 3. Report ALL earnings when certifying (even small amounts) 4. Keep certifying every two weeks even if your hours temporarily increase EDD expects you to be looking for additional work to get back to full employment, even if your current employer has promised to increase your hours soon. Better to be safe than deal with an eligibility interview later.

This is really helpful! I'll definitely mark YES then. So even though my current employer said hours will pick back up, I should still be documenting that I'm looking at other options? I don't want to look disloyal to my boss if things do pick back up.

The EDD website is so frustrating!!! I've been trying to get clarity on this exact question for weeks but couldn't get through on the phone. I finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD rep in under 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The EDD rep confirmed I needed to answer YES to work search while on partial unemployment. She said even looking at job postings counts as work search activity. Worth checking them out if you need to talk to a real person at EDD!

The work search requirement is SO confusing! I was on partial unemployment last year during our company's slow season and I answered NO because my manager told me I'd be back to full-time soon. BIG MISTAKE! My payments got put on hold and I had to do a phone interview to explain my situation. The EDD rep was nice but told me I should have been marking YES and documenting my work search, even if it was just checking job listings online. She cleared my payments but warned me to always mark YES going forward unless I had a specific exemption noted on my account. Don't make my mistake!

Oh wow, thank you for sharing your experience! I'll definitely mark YES then. I don't want to deal with delayed payments or interviews.

i dont understand why EDD makes everything so complicated!!! my sister got laid off completely and has to answer the same questions as someone working part time?? the whole system is broken and they make it confusing ON PURPOSE so they can deny people benefits!!! its so wrong!!!!

While the system definitely has issues, the work search requirement serves a specific purpose - it ensures that everyone receiving benefits is actively trying to become fully employed. But I agree the questions could be more clearly worded for different situations.

Just to clarify for everyone: For partial unemployment, you should: 1. Answer YES to work search questions 2. Report ALL earnings when certifying (your exact gross earnings before deductions) 3. Document simple work search activities (saved job listings, applications, networking, etc.) 4. Continue certifying on schedule even if your hours temporarily increase EDD may not require you to submit your work search record right away, but you need to maintain one in case they ask for it later. They can request it up to 3 years after you file your claim.

I really appreciate all this detailed info! I'm going to start a spreadsheet to track my work search activities. Better safe than sorry.
