EDD intercepted my tax refund but overpayment balance hasn't updated - what next?

I'm super frustrated right now. The IRS notified me that my $1,850 tax refund was intercepted by EDD for an unemployment overpayment from 2023, but when I log into UI Online and check my overpayment balance, it still shows the SAME amount as before! It's been 3 weeks since the interception. Shouldn't my balance be lower now? Do I need to call the overpayment department to make sure they properly applied it to my account? The anxiety of waiting for this to update is killing me because I'm trying to clear this debt before applying for a mortgage next year. Anyone had this happen before? How long did it take for your account to update after a tax refund interception?

This is actually pretty common with EDD right now. Their system doesn't update overpayment balances immediately after tax refund interceptions. In my experience helping others with this issue, it typically takes 4-6 weeks for the payment to be processed and reflected in your UI Online account. EDD processes these interceptions in batches, so even though the IRS already took your refund, EDD's system hasn't registered it yet.

Thanks for the info! Do you know if there's a way to verify they've actually received it other than just waiting? 6 weeks seems like a really long time to update a computer system...

You definitely need to call. My tax refund was intercepted last year ($2,400) and it NEVER showed up on my account. When I finally got through to someone after 2 months of trying, they told me the payment was sitting in an \

Oh no, that's terrible! 93 calls? I really hope mine doesn't take that long to resolve. Have you tried contacting your state representative? I've heard they can sometimes help with EDD issues.

mine took like 8 weeks to update but it did eventually show up. i think it depends on how busy they are. just keep checking ur account every few days.

Same here - took about 7 weeks for mine to show up last year. They're really backed up with processing these intercepts. I think they basically wait until they get a big batch of them and then process them all at once to save time. It's inefficient but eventually works out.

After fighting with this exact issue last year, I finally found a service called Claimyr that got me through to an EDD representative in about 20 minutes. I was skeptical but desperate after trying for days on my own. They basically call EDD for you and when they get through, they connect you with the rep. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km or just go to claimyr.com. In my case, the agent was able to verify they had received my tax intercept and manually apply it to my balance while I was on the phone. Saved me weeks of stress.

Thank you! I'll check this out. At this point I just need to talk to a real person who can tell me what's going on with my account.

my brothers tax refund got taken for edd overpayment too but his was like half applied and half not??? something about different claim years or benefit types i dunno it was weird. maybe check if you had multiple claims and they only applied it to one of them?

Great point. If you had multiple benefit years or both regular UI and PUA claims with overpayments, the tax intercept might only show up on one account. You'd need to check each claim separately in your UI Online portal.

One more thing to check - make sure you're looking at the correct overpayment balance. There are sometimes different sections for different types of overpayments (regular, fraud, penalty assessments). Your payment might have been applied to one balance but you're looking at another. The UI Online interface is terrible at making this clear.

That's a good suggestion. I'll look more carefully through all the sections. You're right that the interface is really confusing sometimes!

After you get this resolved, I recommend requesting a formal overpayment statement from EDD. It's not automatic, but if you ask for it, they'll send you documentation showing all payments (including tax intercepts) that have been applied to your balance. This will be helpful documentation for your mortgage application to show the debt is being properly handled.

Thank you! That's really helpful advice for my mortgage situation. I'll definitely request that statement once I get this sorted out. I appreciate everyone's help here!
