EDD eligibility interview tomorrow - how long until I get approved or denied?

Just filed my very first unemployment claim on March 5th after being laid off from my restaurant management position (company downsizing). My UI Online account is showing that I have an eligibility interview scheduled for tomorrow, March 21st. I'm super nervous and not sure what to expect! For those who've gone through this before - how long after the interview did you find out if you were approved or denied? I've got rent due on the 1st and really need to know if I can count on these benefits. The uncertainty is killing me! Any tips for the interview itself would also be appreciated.

Usually you'll know within 7-10 days after the interview. The interviewer won't tell you a decision on the spot - they just gather information and then someone else reviews everything. If you're approved, you'll see your claim status change from 'pending' to 'paid' in your UI Online account, and you'll receive a Notice of Determination by mail. My interview was pretty straightforward - they just verified my employment info and asked why I was no longer working. Make sure you have your employment dates, final paystub, and separation details ready!

Thank you! Really hoping it doesn't take the full 10 days. Did they ask anything that surprised you during your interview?

THIS!!! The EDD is a JOKE!!! I had my interview back in January and answered EVERYTHING honestly. They STILL put me on pending for 6 WEEKS with ZERO explanation!!! Had to call literally 97 times before finally getting through to someone who could actually help!!! The system is DESIGNED to make people give up!!!

After my interview in February, it took about 5 business days before my status changed from pending to paid. Here's what I'd recommend: 1. Answer truthfully but concisely. Don't volunteer extra information unless asked. 2. Have your termination letter or layoff documentation ready. 3. Know exact dates of your last employment. 4. Be prepared to explain your work search efforts. 5. If you haven't certified yet, do so as soon as you're allowed - don't wait for the interview results. If your claim stays pending for more than 10 business days after the interview, that's when you should start calling EDD. In my experience, sometimes the interview results just need to be manually processed by a claims examiner.

This is super helpful, thank you! I've already certified for the first two weeks but they're stuck on pending. I'll definitely have all my documentation ready. Did they ask you about your job search during the interview? I've been applying places but haven't had any interviews yet.

Try Claimyr! I was in the same situation last month - interview done but claim stuck pending for 2 weeks. I tried calling EDD myself about 30 times and kept getting the "we're too busy" message. Found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that got me through to an EDD rep in under an hour. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. The rep I spoke to was able to push my claim through right away - turns out it was just sitting in someone's queue needing approval.

Every claim is different, but mine took about 2 weeks after the phone interview to change from pending to paid. The interview itself was only about 10 minutes - they just verified the information on my application and asked a few questions about why I was no longer working. One thing that confuses a lot of people: your certifications will show as "pending" until after the interview results are processed. Don't panic about that! Just keep certifying every two weeks. Also, make sure you answer the phone when they call - they'll try twice if you miss it, but then they'll make a determination with the information they have, which could result in a denial if they have questions. If your claim doesn't update within 2 weeks after the interview, definitely call. The waiting is definitely stressful, but try to stay calm!

Update: Had my interview today and it only lasted about 15 minutes! The interviewer was actually very nice and just asked me to confirm some basic info about my employment and layoff. She wouldn't tell me a decision but said I should hear something "soon." Fingers crossed the payment comes through quickly!

That's great! Short interviews are usually a good sign. Keep an eye on your UI Online account - often the status will change there before you get any official notice in the mail. I'd give it about 3-5 business days before you start worrying.

Just want to warn you that the EDD is SUPER backlogged right now! My coworker and I were both laid off the same day in February. He got approved in 1 week after his interview. Mine took FIVE WEEKS!! And we had identical situations!! It's completely random who processes your claim and how fast they work. Just be prepared to wait and have a backup plan for bills if possible.

Another update: My status just changed to PAID!!! Only took 4 business days after the interview. SO relieved right now. Thanks everyone for your help and advice! For anyone else going through this - the interview was really straightforward, just be honest and have your employment info ready. Now I just need to wait for my EDD debit card to arrive.

Congrats! That's quick turnaround. The Money Network debit card should arrive within 7-10 days. Just be aware you'll need to activate it online before you can use it. Some banks also let you transfer the funds directly to your checking account through the Money Network portal once you're set up.

You must receive the card first, then you can set up direct deposit through the Money Network website after activating your card. It's a bit annoying but that's how their system works. Make sure you keep your card even after setting up direct deposit because they'll use the same card for any future claims within 3 years.
