How fast do you get unemployment money from NYS Department of Labor after filing?

Just filed my unemployment claim yesterday and wondering how long before I actually see money? I got laid off from my restaurant job last week and bills are already piling up. The NYS Department of Labor website said my claim was accepted but doesn't give any timeline. Has anyone gotten their first payment recently? Really need to know what to expect timing wise.

If everything goes smoothly with your claim, you're usually looking at about 2-3 weeks from filing to first payment. But that's assuming no adjudication issues come up. You'll need to file your weekly claims every week even while waiting for approval. The money gets direct deposited if you set that up, otherwise they mail a debit card.

Thanks! I did set up direct deposit so hopefully that helps speed things up. Do you know if restaurant workers have any special issues with claims?

mine took forever!! like 6 weeks because they had to verify my work history or something. kept saying adjudication in progress and I couldn't get through to anyone at NYS Department of Labor

Six weeks is way too long. Did you eventually get back pay for those weeks you were waiting?

yeah I got back pay but it was really stressful not knowing what was happening

The standard timeline is 2-3 weeks if your claim doesn't require adjudication. Restaurant workers sometimes face delays if there are questions about tips reporting or if you worked multiple jobs. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week - that's crucial. If your claim gets stuck in adjudication for more than a few weeks, you might want to try calling NYS Department of Labor, though their phone lines are notoriously busy.

Speaking of calling NYS Department of Labor - I had success using Claimyr when I couldn't get through on my own. It's a service that helps you reach unemployment agents by phone. Check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI. Saved me hours of trying to get through myself when my claim was stuck.

I filed in November and got my first payment in like 10 days! But I think I was lucky because it was right after I got let go and my employer didn't contest it or anything. Restaurant jobs are usually pretty straightforward for unemployment.

Wow 10 days would be amazing! Hoping mine goes that smooth.

just keep filing those weekly claims even if you don't see money yet!! that's the biggest mistake people make
